My latest bulletin from the world of thinking-too-much-about-pop-music is up. Any comments?

Tom, Saturday, 9 September 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was actually hoping from the headline on the page itself that you were talking to somebody else entirely that you knew called Jessica Simpson about pop in general. Alas, you have shattered my crystal palace.

That said, I think I need to reread it properly before I say anything further (irony! pop should be immediate, why shouldn't commentary on it be so? ;-)). Good, but something...something made me wonder, and I'm not sure what.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 September 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I should probably also say that I made 'Jessica' say a couple of things that I don't actually believe, so as to make it more of a 'dialogue'...!

Tom, Saturday, 9 September 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Excellent. I showed it to a friend and he said the only thing that could make it better would be if Jessica Simpson ever actually said any of those things. It's a shame that the award for "most self-aware teenpop star" has to go to Britney for "Lucky".

Tim Finney, Saturday, 9 September 2000 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As a pop lover I though it was very good, but I just wish it had been written around Mandy Moore, or even (gasp!) Christina. Because of the heavy right-wing conservative Christian rhetoric she usually spouts, she's a thousand times more offensive to women than Mr. Mathers could ever hope to be.

But hey, other than that...

three years pass...
Jessica Simpson: "With You"

I bet a million dollars this was written for Faith Hill, who wisely laughed the songwriter out of Nashville.

Also in the video she eats tuna out of the can and wears a t-shirt that says plata-ma-pus. Also I saw her hubby's video, which is all about how much he loves Jessica. WTF dudes.

I want to see this

ModJ (ModJ), Sunday, 21 December 2003 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

As usual, Tom can't write for shit.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 21 December 2003 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

that would be offensive if it wasn't so obviously untrue.

i think this whole phenomenon is kind of cute, it's like they are just singing about what they want to sing about and no one is around to apprise them of the fact that they might appear a bit self-involved or self-serving.

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 21 December 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently they're going to be doing a duet album. This may or may not give readers the PH34R.

Nick Lachey's solo album was called Soulo. HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I really liked the approach to the article. It was of a reasonable person analyizing music as objectively (or, I guess subjectively, without false pretenses though) as possible. It didn't come off in full praise or scorn of either indie or pop, it was more like just explaining what they both are and have been doing. And most importantly, it was interesting. Don't see that much in music writing these days.

Revive, because I just listened to I Think I'm In Love again, and it may have held up better than, say every Brit. single since Baby One More Time...

This ho totally rocks!

Jessica Blows Me, Friday, 16 April 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Googlers are funny folk.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think of them as some crazed primitive tribe with internet access.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot about this thread. It's funny how offensive I thought Jessica was at the time, but I remember her saying some pretty backwards stuff regarding feminism, etc.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate that "With You" song so fucking much.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It probably is one of the worst singles of the year.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I stand by what I said upthread.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Whaaat? You guys are absolutely whacked.

I like it so much, I was sort of disappointed when I found out it was her - "Jessica Simpson made a song this good?!"

I like it better than "Toxic"! I think it's my favorite pop single of the year so far.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure anything is better than "Toxic" this year.

I did like Jessica's Jack and Diane rip.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"With You" sounds like it should be fast food jingle, irritating but ultimately ignorable.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the worst things I've said in the last few weeks was that I wouldn't even piss on Jessica Simpson because that would mean I'd have to look at her long enough to aim.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It's tough but fair.
