Their site...

http://www.the-sisters-of-mercy.com/

.....doesn't seem to have been updated in quite a while (though the intro blurb does give a nod to current events in the world). The were stilling playing live for a while, but that's stopped. Under the "record news" section, it says they were going to release a single (dubbed somewhat flamboyantly Made Glorious Summer, an allusion to Shakespeare's "Richard III"), but those plans fell through and that they're now working on that album. It's said that, however, for about three or four years now. Whattup? The last update in the "Other News" section was in December 2001.

I know Eldritch likes to take his fucking time, but it's been quite a long damn while. If they've called it quits, why then still the website? What gives?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 July 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Smith is their webmaster.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 July 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(Real answer: I don't know, I barely was paying attention to the fact that they were still touring.)

Looks more like Andrew has undertaken a sideline as a fire safety warden.

I'm still trying to figure out how one sings a corrosion.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 17 July 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It involves a lot of fishnets, makeup, and flailing of armpit hair.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

SING!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 July 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

My theory is as such. He is not asking you to sing about corrosion or corrode him with your singing or something. He is asking you to sing "This Corrosion" to him. It is the most self-centered song ever written. He is asking you to sing his own song at him. Not asking, ordering. It's good.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but how can he ask someone to sing "This Corrosion" to him when he's doing it in the song itself? Doesn't this involve some loophole in the time/space continuum? Man, self-centered-ness is one thing, but this is too fucking far.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 18 July 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

doktor avalanche has swallowed andrews' brain.

this makes me laugh everytime i read it(yes,i check for updates often, why??):

Gibson Firebird '76 reissue

A crap guitar, with nothing original on it except the wood. No sustain, neck heavy, fragile, doesn't feedback very well at all, hard to play, sounds thin. Looks great. I love it. My main axe which I've played in every Sisters show since Summer 1993. Yes, I am shallow

kephm, Friday, 18 July 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

err...it's 2003, everyone..... the Sisters is like.... SO 20 years ago. Great in the early 80s...but now? Enough, surely?

...if they're STILL flogging their holes and touring.... maybe they're at Pontefract Butlins or something? The Summer Goth Extravaganza.

You can bet your life the Damned will be there.....

russ t, Friday, 18 July 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

How now, how brown cow, drink chocolate milk to me.

kate (kate), Friday, 18 July 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw them two years ago. They seem to have enough material to put out a double album, so I don't understand the situation. Record distrib problem, maybe?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Friday, 18 July 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i recently saw the @ bristol academy. £20 a ticket. i walked out after 40 mins. cold/unemotional/uninvolving. couldn't see any of the band. was duller than dishwater as a live experience.
a complete waste of dry ice and black t shirts. dont hold breathe for new stuff. twas all the Hits. i heard one Goth advising that Andrew only ever goes out on tour when he needs the £££.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 18 July 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oddly enough, a cold, unemotional show of Sisters of Mercy hits sounds exactly like what I'd be looking for from one of their shows. (My big complaint about the one time I saw them is that Andrew tried to hard at points; it worked on songs like "Ribbons" but fell flat on "Doctor Jeep" and "First And Last And Always".)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 July 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Bristol Academy's a terrible venue, though..... but it's the only venue in Bristol that holds over 40 people....

russ t, Friday, 18 July 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

*sigh* This is nothing compared to the whole massive dischord presented in Back to the Future and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure--please do not get me started on erroneous beliefs in time travel structure in pop culture, cos I can go for days.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

But what about the Hasslein (sp?) theory as explored in "Planet of the Apes"?

I listen to "Alice (1993)" tonight, I wonder if anything has been updated...nope.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I re-read the thread as a result of Ned's revive.

Looks more like Andrew has undertaken a sideline as a fire safety warden.
"Everyone remain Calm!"

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...), July 18th, 2003.

I misread this as "Everyone remain Calum!"

I died a little before I realised my error.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 26 July 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but how can he ask someone to sing "This Corrosion" to him when he's doing it in the song itself? Doesn't this involve some loophole in the time/space continuum?

I realize it's a little o/t to bring up "The Tennessee Waltz" in the context of a Sisters of Mercy thread, but that song presents a similar conundrum. If the song is "The Tennessee Waltz," and the singer is recounting (in the past tense) how he was dancin' with his darlin' to "The Tennessee Waltz," how can he be dancing to the song in which he's singing about how he was dancing to it? Some sort of alternate universe stuff going on there. Raises the possibility that the guy who stole his darlin' (while they were dancin' to the song he's singing about them) could actually be him coming back in time to take her away before she can be taken by the guy who took her away -- which was really him too, except he doesn't know it, nor does he realize that the guy singing the song he's dancing to is also him, a future version of himself sending back a message in the form of a hit record to warn himself about the guy (him again, remember) who's going to steal his darlin'. But he gets the warning too late, so he has to go back in time to try to stop it from happening...

Uh...ok, I'm done. Back to the goths.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 26 July 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
THIS JUST IN!....

Nothing new is happening. Well, apparently they're touring....in Europe (surprise)....but no new activity on the album/single front.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

last time they toured (bristol about 2 years ago) the show was truly the most boring live show i have ever seen.

couldn't see anything. didn't realise anyone was on the stage for over 10 minutes .. never saw the bass player.

smoke mahines on overdrive.

even the hardcore were getting tired and bored - overheard one couple discussing how andrew only does shows when he needs the moolah.

afterall - he has no record deal these days does he ?

mark e (mark e), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Well, some activity:

Hey now....where'd we find this?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

(like the world needed another version of "Alice")

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

(if only...)

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh, that can't be real. it can't.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

It's not real of course. But really, this kind of thing should totally happen right now, with all the techno folk embracing their inner goth.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Thing is.. I was saying that out of denial only because I would truly believe its existence. Siegbran OTM.

I'm still waiting for the Sex Gang Children rediscovery.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

yes this real, there have been bootlegs of Alice circulating in London on the club scene.

Yeah, but how can he ask someone to sing "This Corrosion" to him when he's doing it in the song itself? Doesn't this involve some loophole in the time/space continuum?

Ally's right about the parsing of the chorus - he is demanding that his own song, 'This Corrosion', be sung back to him. As for whether the act requires time travel, I think not.

He's asking the chick or chicks - probably the bunch of classically trained goth opera chicks who feature in the backing choir on the song - to sing 'This Corrosion' to him, so that he can be satisfied they know the song.

There is no need for a time warp. They can sing it to him as soon as he's finished asking them to. They can sing over the top of his version if they like, or wait for him to finish first, so that they can be sure that know the song.

As a parallel example, I might say to you, 'Imitate my speaking voice'. I am not requiring you to step back in time. You may do it as soon as the request is made. People are far too ready to violate the laws of time in my opinion, where this is not necessary.

moley, Monday, 16 May 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

"This Corrosion" is allegedly about his ex-songwriting partner/former Sister/current Mission man, Wayne Hussey...who could very well indeed sing that corrosion to Andrew, Wayne also being a singer and all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
If anyone is in Leeds this evening and still cares enough to bother, this was posted to the official Sisters site.

02 August 2005 : NIGHT OFF. We'll be watching Near Meth Experience at a pub in Leeds.

Near Meth Experience play for free, because they're a shambles.

More in mainland Europe later in the month:
06 August 2005 Netherlands Tilburg 013

08 August 2005 Belgium Lokeren Lokerse Festival

10 August 2005 Switzerland Zurich X-Tra

11 August 2005 Austria Vienna Vienna Arena Open Air

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

So, perhaps unsurprisingly, this turned out to be a secret Sisters gig.

Onimo OTM, First & Last is generally a disppointment with a few good moments - really by the time "Walk Away" comes out the b-sides are considerably better than the a-sides

yeah but the singles that preceded FALAA >>>>>>>>> everything that came after - I never bought "Some Girls Wander" but that's basically the singles up to the major-label jump innit

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Some Girls Wander By Mistake is pure unadulterated brilliance, but so is Floodland.

Dan (The Other Two Are Merely Great) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Some Girls > Some Boys (bootleg with the best B sides) > Floodland > Gift > FALAA > Vision Thing.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe they're playing Neverland. I'm tempted to go see them just for that...

Le Baaderonixx de Clignancourt (baaderonixx), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

uhuh

Some girls > some boys > gift >>>>> FALAA > Floodland >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Vison Thing (apart from Ribbons, which almost sounds like a Sisters song)

xp

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

some girls > some boys >>>> falaa > gift >>> floodland >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> vision thing

wangdangsweetpentangle (teenagequiet), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I guess then the real debate here is TS: Floodland Vs. FALAA

Le Baaderonixx de Clignancourt (baaderonixx), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Or "we all know they were better before Hussey joined, but what about after he left?"

Hussey was on TV the other night, in his infmaous "drunk on James Whale Show" clip.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 24 February 2006 15:04 (twenty years ago)

that first encore is some bullshit right there

Hell no! It'd make me *orgasmic* if they busted out with "Never Land" like that.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 25 February 2006 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Falalalaaaaaaa

I still might go see them. Or not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 25 February 2006 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Vision Thing > FALAA

You don't deserve to own ears.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 25 February 2006 03:56 (twenty years ago)

"lucretia (my reflection)" isn't fit to clean "floorshow"'s toilet, I stand by my bold claim that the encore performed by the Sisters of Mercy at their Vegas show is a travesty of historical proportions

"dance the ghost with me" my ass

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Saturday, 25 February 2006 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Could've been worse. They could've played "Under the Gun".

Alex in NYC...who knows the truth that "Adrenochrome" OWNS you. (vassifer), Saturday, 25 February 2006 04:36 (twenty years ago)

I like "Lucretia" :(

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 25 February 2006 13:18 (twenty years ago)

People who don't like "Lucretia" make Jeremiah cry.

Dan (Lamentations) Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

They were unspeakably horrid last time they played NYC.

Woo hoo. Two anonymous guitar players you couldn't hear, a Linn drum--or more likely, a recording of a Linn drum--and Andy's orange nehru fireman outfit. What fun.

Ian in Brooklyn, Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Lucretia has a great bassline.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 25 February 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Could've been worse. They could've played "Under the Gun". haha OTM, Adrenochrome is worth 5 Lucretias and several Floods

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Saturday, 25 February 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

maybe they should just play a 50-minute version of "The Damage Done" with Andrew on live drums to satisfy Sisters purists

Yeah, what I've heard of the new songs are great but damned if there's ever going to be a studio version of them. I suppose "We Are The Same Suzanne" isn't 'new' given it's about a decade old but I love the chorus.

A really great article and brought back many memories of some of the people I knew in the phase after like Danny Horigan and Clare Shearsby (they were a couple by then, lending some weight to Andrew's anecdote about everybosy in the F Club going round each other). And pints in the Fav, inevitably.
