Mick, Prince, Iggy, Kurt...

does a height deficit increase rock power? why? other examples of miniature rock gods?

fritz, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronnie James Dio

dave q, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Prince is the only one on the list I thought was short. At the very least he's the shortest. Is Mick Jagger really short??

Sean, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How tall is Iggy? How tall is Kurt? I heard Henry Rollins is short, too. Me, I'm only 5'8", I think. I think your entire list except Prince is taller than me. And for that I say up yours.

Nude Spock, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ok, mick's 5'11", but the others are short. spock: hey, some of my best friend's are short! I wouldn't want my sister to marry one, or anything, but...

fritz, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But that's not officially SHORT, you bastard!!!! Harrumph. Yeah, it is, I guess. You fucking giants are ruining everything.

Nude Spock, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, i forgot about ac/dc... those guys are all really short.

i think average height is around 5'10', so that makes mick on the short side of tall.

fritz, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maynard from Tool.

DJ Martian, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I saw Michael Stipe in the flesh: he's a midget.

Kerry Keane, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and isn't Roger Daltrey a shrinky-dinky as well?

Kerry Keane, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick Kershaw

nathalie, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blue Oyster Cult. They be tiny folk also.

Cash Lone, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

canibus, who you wouldn't really expect to be that short. and phife, of course.

ethan, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not that this anything to do with the point of the thread, but didn't Toad the Wet Sprocket have a near-midget drummer? Or possibly an actual certifiable midget?

That's pretty cool, now that I think about it.

Nitsuh, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Glen Danzig is a good example. Short but built like a bull. And Trent Reznor is only like 5'6".

bnw, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bono's a bit on the diminutive side, no?

alex in nyc, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the scorpions? i think those dudes were pretty small. and randy rhoades as well.

ernest, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Randy Rhoades was a lot smaller after his plane crashed into the ground.

Billy Dods, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, this thread is making me feel awfully short. 5'10" is average? Jesus: my nose appears to be the only part of my body that's not 3% shorter than the mean.

Nitsuh, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

small faces, duh. and toronto's heavy metal giants "the killer dwarfs" (sic) were supposedly all under 5 ft.

fritz, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How tall is Iggy? How tall, how tall?

I'm 5' 1.5". so there.

Lyra, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bob Seger is 4'11". Kate Bush — since she just got CoD-threaded - is a pretty massive and unexpected 5'11". One of the wackier theories for why the Beatles were so spookily successful, is that — give or a quarter of an inch obviously — they were all EXACTLY THE SAME HEIGHT, 5'8"...

mark s, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't King Diamond really tiny? There's also this black metal band let by a dwarf, maybe it's Ulver, I'm not sure.

Kris, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since Kate isnt posting at the moment that leaves me to say: Peter Holmstrom and Jay Ferguson. Both blond floppy tiny guitarist who do all the work behind their bigger counterparts the modern day Evan Dando, Courtney Taylor and Chris Murphy.

zacko, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5'10" may be average for men of north european descent but is certainly not the average for men worldwide. i don't consider 5'8" short. (incidentally, i'm 5'10" so i'm not writing out of any personal beef. when i visited kerala, people thought i was really tall.)

sundar subramanian, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"One of the wackier theories for why the Beatles were so spookily successful, is that — give or a quarter of an inch obviously — they were all EXACTLY THE SAME HEIGHT, 5'8"..."

I heard the same only it was about the Small Faces.

DavidM, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thom Yorke is 5'5". If you look closely at most promo shots he's wearing platform shoes so he doesn't look like a midget. And Ed O'Brien, who is a full foot taller than him, is always positioned in the far back of band photos.

Melissa W, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

udo from accept

keith, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

kylie minougue?

Geoff, Saturday, 4 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DavidM: The Beatles were/are all 5'11", except for Ringo, who is 5'2". And, in response to an earlier question, Cobain was 5'7".

There are a lot of short, pudgy bassists (and also a lot of tall, lanky bassists, too--lots of extremes), so much so that it's become a musician stereotype. The first person who springs to mind, for some reason, is Matt from Counting Crows, who's pretty cute, to boot. Definitely pudgy, though, and probably about 5'5".

matthew m., Saturday, 4 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, when I was a kid my Dad was very close friends with the Killer Dwarfs (the singer[?] married my aunt before I was born, they divorced later) and they're all about my dad's height, 5'10".

Alexis Dicks, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I join Lyra in shouting: "How tall is Iggy?". 'Cause he look rilly rather lanky.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark Webber in Pulp is tiny. He's so small that he's barely even there.

jamesmichaelward, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'They got no reason to live...'

dave q (6'1"), Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've seen David Bowie up-close, and he's a real short-arse... In his recent (crappy) bk William Goldman points out that most male movie stars are pretty tiny too - Napoleon complex at work here?

Andrew L, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait, now. How tall's Bowie?

Trent Reznor: 5'6"-5'7"

Lyra, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bowie is 5'11". I hope that doesn't qualify one to be a 'short-arse,' otherwise I'm a 'midget-arse' at 5'9".

matthew m., Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suppose Stephin Merritt is rather far from being a rock god, but he does have a big mouth and he is tiny.
