Falling in Love With Songs Covered by Amateurs

This came up for me in the Tom Waits thread. The first time I heard "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" was performed by a friend of mine who was strumming a guitar and singing in my living room. I was immediatly , "Jesus! What song was that?" and then I had to go out and find it. It seems like quite a testament to good songwriting when you can fall in love with a song performed badly by a friend with a guitar. Have you ever had something similar happen?

a friend of mine kept singing the "What do you want from the liquor store?/something sour, something sweet/I'll buy you all that your belly can hold" refrain from Ted Hawkins' "Sorry You're Sick".

he's a clever guy, so i thought he was making it up on the spot..."that would make a really good song, you know" says I.

now one of my favorites.

Although I wouldn't really call'em amateurs, dEUS used to cover Clever White Youth. Friend of a friend covered FakePlaticTrees. Had a good laugh complimenting him on writing such a sweet song.

Does it count if I first heard "Cast a Shadow" as covered by Cub?

The first time I heard "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" was on MTV (or maybe VH1) during a live unplugged performance by Hootie & The Blowfish. This was quite a few years ago, and I didn't know it was a Waits tune at the time, but I remember loving the song even though it was Hootie singing it.

Singing "Barrett's Privateers" with a bunch of Cape Bretoners on a cold night, then going and finding out who sang it (Stan Rogers), buying the tape, and being keenly disappointed.

Yeah I used to believe the music of BONO & U2 was COMPLETELY WITHOUT MERIT until Bill Vosburgh played a couple of their songs to me on a acoustic. A revelation! Man some of those songs are actually real good!
The way they do 'em sucks tho. Plus Billy is about 1000 times better guitar player than The Side or whatever his name is, hey who isn't, that wasn't the point though ('cause he didn't do any flash gtr stuff to them, just strummed 'em out)

Most music from CApe Breton sounds better drunk in a kitchen then on any record .
