A sad day for fans and friends of the Exploding Hearts: http://www2.kval.com/x30530.xml?ParentPageID=x2649&ContentID=x41115&Layout=kval.xsl&AdGroupID=x30530

Nick Mirov (nick), Monday, 21 July 2003 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeep. Don't know the band but damn. (Though I hate to say it so soon but if you're not wearing yer seatbelts...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 July 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

:=(

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 21 July 2003 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That's awfully sad. And the website's outdated call for a new drummer only makes it sadder. I usually hate it when people say wistful things about dead musicians meeting up in heaven, but I can't help thinking of Jim Ellison.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 21 July 2003 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK FUCK FUCK. their record was one of the best released in the last year. goddammit, does the name "D.Boon" mean ANYTHING to anybody anymore? wear your seatbelts, people!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 21 July 2003 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

WHOA. I'm on the verge right now. This is REALLY fucking disturbing. I...wow, I really wasn't expecting something like this after watching Johnny Suede and having a good laugh. Their debut was one of the most promising in years. They were one of Pitchfork's pet projects. I read the interview a couple of days ago, and it actually made me glad I took the time to read it. This is horrible. Bless 'em...

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Monday, 21 July 2003 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK!!!!!! I just drove in from Pennsylvania a couple hours ago, and played their album (which is indeed great) all the way through TWICE on the way in. I'm not kidding. A half hour ago, I just picked seven (out of ten) songs to add to Village Voice Radio. And *then* I looked at these threads, and saw the link. I'm really, really sad about this.

chuck, Monday, 21 July 2003 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

This is fucked. Their record wasn't the best I heard this year, but it was one of the only albums that made me smile every time I put it on. I could always count on it to turn around my mood. Fuck. Fuck.

alex in montreal, Monday, 21 July 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It's really fucking sad... so young and full of promise, they just made the cover of Shredding Paper and had alot of label interest. The fact that they're so young just compounds the tragedy: I remember back over all the things that have happened since I turned 21, and that's just when shit started getting good. I just saw them in Portland in June and was really impressed...

At very least, they have an album out that people (I'm sure) will find again and again over the years... not much help to their friends & family, though.

Andy, Tuesday, 22 July 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dirtnap Records site sez a memorial service is being held tomorrow (the 23rd) in Portland, while two benefit shows follow next week, so for those in the area...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

And from the label's message board, a downright touching post about what turned out to be the group's last show.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...
This appears to be the only Exploding Hearts thread as such. Here's the info on their rarities collection Shattered, which you can order directly from Dirtnap right now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Very moving post from their message board from a couple of years back.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, THANK you.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

SECONDED EMPHATICALLY

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

Thirded (if that's a word). Their deaths were terribly sad. And Guitar Romantic is a great album.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 18 October 2006 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, I saw this band! Supporting Richard Lloyd in New York in Nov. 2001, what a shame...

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

They played New York? Somehow I'd thought their first and only East Coast show was in 2003 at Harvard...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

It was definitely them, I remember the name + the descriptions of the music fits

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

I learn something new every day!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

... 'twas in a famous venue in Greenwich Village, the Bottom Line maybe? And it was them, judging by the photos 'n' shit

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

Well you can tell power-pop kids of future generations that YOU WERE THERE!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

They were good! I didn't know they were about to become famous (for the wrong reasons)

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, like I mentioned up top, I only heard about them after it was too late, but I do enjoy Guitar Romantic -- "I'm a Pretender" is my favorite -- and this compilation looks fun. I kinda fear the inevitable bad biopic made about them in twenty years time, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

guitar romantic is one of the best albums of the decade

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

weve been OTMing each other so much!

69, Friday, 10 April 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

XD

if i'm in love with guitar romantic what other albums from this decade would i also like that i might've missed?

also older stuff, don't really know much about like punky power-pop about relationships but it's a genre (?) that i really love i.e. blink 182

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

the real kids

Mr. Que, Friday, 10 April 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

the way i started with punky power-pop was the rhino DIY comps (come out and play, shake it up, mass ave, we're desperate, starry eyes, and uh two UK punk ones, and one more UK pop one...)

69, Friday, 10 April 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

as far as current day punky power-pop, the whole goner/termbo scene (which mr que actually pushed me into!) is pretty active these days, and encompasses a lot of that stuff (and also a lot of "weird-punk" and noize).

69, Friday, 10 April 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

jordan do you mean fun(ny) power-pop-punk like these guys and blink? or just upbeat stuff

k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

not really power pop per se but Redd Kross Born Innocent is pretty awesome and pretty trashy. also hi p3te!

Mr. Que, Friday, 10 April 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

Account for domain www.explodinghearts.com has been suspended

Sad but understandable. Most active current site is a fansite on Myspace:

Ned Raggett, Friday, 10 April 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

The Boys - The Boys
The Boys - Alternative Chartbusters
The Boys - To Hell With The Boys
Teenage Head - s/t
Generation X - s/t
Pointed Sticks - Waiting For The Real Thing

(old stuff)

Nice Boys - band of surviving Exploding Heart - are OK too.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 10 April 2009 19:49 (sixteen years ago)

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Friday, 10 April 2009 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

You might also want to check out some of the stuff In The Red has been recently. Really great stuff that could be considered related to this style.

jonathan - stl, Friday, 10 April 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

thank u guys

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

if i'm in love with guitar romantic what other albums from this decade would i also like that i might've missed?

i would suggest:

marked men - fix my brain

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 10 April 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

+ gentlemen jesse & his men

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 10 April 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

pretty soon people are gonna realize that jay reatard is power pop

otm in new york (G00blar), Friday, 10 April 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

i <3 jay

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

pretty soon people are going to keep thinking he's punk imo

k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2009 20:48 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i guess i dunno that's always splitting hairs to me...pop punk in the buzzcocks/undertones sense gets pretty close to power pop.

j0rdan for older stuff the nerves are great, or some power pop comps out there

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 10 April 2009 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

yeah of course; all I'm really saying is Blood Visions and the Matador singles comp are a lot closer to what the Exploding Hearts were doing than much of what passes as power pop...and yet I'd call the EHs pretty classic power pop.

otm in new york (G00blar), Friday, 10 April 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

also oh man I was just listening to that recent nerves comp. so good! How have I never heard 'Working too hard'?

otm in new york (G00blar), Friday, 10 April 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

oh yeah shit--jay reatard

Mr. Que, Friday, 10 April 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

but j0rdan you probably know about him

Mr. Que, Friday, 10 April 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

yeah yeah i'm way into jay, esp his recent stuff. matador 08 was one of my fav albums from last year

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

is http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bf/Replacements-LetItBe.jpg like this?

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2009 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

dogg how have you not heard that

k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

sb but this hurts me a lot more than its going to hurt you

k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

\o_O/

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

dude yes--although you also need their first one, which you should file under power trash

Mr. Que, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

^otm stink is totally up this alley.

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i mean everything up to pleased to meet me is fairly essential and fucking awesome--tho i think Tim is pretty hit or miss, but other people love it

Mr. Que, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

Like this guy

otm in new york (G00blar), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

i never heard the remaster of tim, i love those songs but always thought it sounded so gray and lifeless

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i dunno it was the first one I heard so I got into Westerberg's songwriting through that 80s studio sound and then strangely had to work to 'get' the earlier sound.

otm in new york (G00blar), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

Tim was the first Replacements I heard and I didn't like it. Have since come around to them via Sorry Ma & Stink. I did d/l the remaster of Tim to give it another go though, haven't got round to it yet.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

speaking of Westerberg, "anything but that", "let's not belong together", "knock it right out", etc. off Granpaboy Mono might fit the bill

now is the time to winterize your manscape (will), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

also, I remember in interviews the Ex<3s citing the first Nick Lowe record (Pure Pop For Now People/Jesus of Cool) as a big influence on Guitar Romantic--I don't think it really has a similar sound, but it's definitely power pop of the highest order.

otm in new york (G00blar), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

oh=maybe big star j0rdan, if you're not into them yet? maybe you should start with live at Missouri University, recorded in Hearnes Center parking lot lolllllllllllllll

Mr. Que, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

yes yes everyone look at those DIY comp tracklists! ROSETTA STONED

69, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

tho it's pretty sloppy so maybe not

Mr. Que, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

Jordan, you should check out LOVER! the project of Rich Crook who used to play with Jay in the Lost Sounds. Tune in to my KOPN radio show next wednesday night from 10-12 and I will play some for you.

Trip Maker, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

otm in new york (G00blar), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

Trip Maker, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

Trip Maker, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

some albums people haven't mentioned yet, fwiw:

THIS DECADE

fm knives - useless & modern
clorox girls - j'aime les filles
the hatepinks - plastic bag ambitions
les hatepinks - tete malade/sick in the head
the spunks - yellow fever blues

OLD STUFF

999 - high energy plan
vibrators - pure mania
adverts - crossing the red sea with the adverts
zero boys - vicious circle
the panics - 1980-81: i wanna kill my mom
modernettes - get it straight
young canadians - no escape

xhuxk, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

thank u chuck

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2009 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

adverts - crossing the red sea with the adverts

^^top 10 punk albums ever IMO

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:36 (sixteen years ago)

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_takzGF0gtps/SLPe2DUgtPI/AAAAAAAAABY/qRyqPVp_INw/s320/buzz.jpg

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:39 (sixteen years ago)

seriously that album is probably top 5 for me

Mr. Que, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

eddie and the hot rods -- teenage depression
eddie and the hot rods -- life on the line
the briefs - hit after hit (from 2000, though their subsequent albums went downhill songwise)

and if you want to lean toward less punky but still powerful powerpop (which some people here seem to be doing), there's all those c.-1979 l.a. bands like the beat (w/ paul collins not ranking roger), the pop, 20/20, even the knack if you're brave. etc.

and beyond that: pearl harbor & the explosions, holly & the italians, sue saad & the next, the kings, etc. etc. hell, just check the dollar bins -- anything that looks new wavey and has a name kinda like that from '79-81 is probably worth a buck.

xhuxk, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

seriously all these bands are on the DIY comps

69, Friday, 10 April 2009 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

can you still find those?

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 10 April 2009 21:59 (sixteen years ago)

sure you can http://digivinyltal.blogspot.com/2008/06/diy-shake-it-up-american-power-pop-ii.html

tylerw, Friday, 10 April 2009 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

What a great album they made. So sad.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 10 April 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

yeah on ebay/half/amazon -- they used to be like $15-40 on CD, but now theyre like $5-10. i think they pressed LP versions, too, but ive never seen one!

69, Friday, 10 April 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

One of the best rock discs of the decade, maybe?

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 10 April 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

adverts - crossing the red sea with the adverts

yeah the guy who works in the pizza shop i frequent back home and got me into punk music swears by this

also w/r/t big star, this is where i'm like wtf when people conflate power-pop and pop-punk...iirc jordan has some big star stuff and we briefly talked about them recently, but there's nothing punk about them, the same reason i wouldnt call exploding hearts or jay reatard power-pop

k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2009 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

some kinds are more 'powerful'
some kinds are more 'pop'!

otm in new york (G00blar), Friday, 10 April 2009 22:10 (sixteen years ago)

yeah exactly -- its not conflation, its spectral analysis

69, Friday, 10 April 2009 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the guy who works in the pizza shop i frequent back home and got me into punk music swears by this

As well he should. Absolutely stellar.
