Soulwax / Too Many DJs - Classic or Dud?

I picked up one of those Soulwax "Too Many DJs" compilations (#6) for my friend at one of the NYC Virgin locations ($25 -- eesh). It was extremely well received. I'm curious about the legality of this. So um, we should talk about this here.

I'm new to this whole DJ mix thing and you all should tell me about it. Also, does anyone have a listing of the contents of all the Soulwax mixes?

Also, I kinda want the track list online so I can search for some of the artists new to me on it. Coming to this with a music knowledge only spanning the Indie cannon, these seems like a great way to immerse myself in lots of fun music that I wouldn't hear otherwise.

vol. 2 is the only legit release in the UK, and even thats debatable (intitially you could only get it on import here). there are around another 5 volumes including the recent 'Hang All DJs' one tho i'm still not sure if thats even them. all should be available on slsk if nothing else.

Since only "As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt2" is an official release, with all the rights cleared - see www.2manydjs.org for the whole story -, all the others are bootlegs (as in the original sense of the word, meaning not officially released by the band or their record company).

It's funny that while they are from Belgium, it seems easier to get the bootlegs in the USA. I haven't seen any of the compilations in a store over here (Belgium), let alone in a mainstream chain as Virgin.

There are a couple of places on the net that have tracklists of the cd's / mixes.

I thought that the "New Wave" tracks were a little too mainstream. But then again, that's my complaint about all the New Wave that DJs seem to play (like the club I was at last night).

A very mainstream store here in Melbourne got volumes 1 and 3-5 in, and had a sign on the display that said they weren't getting any in after that batch went. I went back later that week and sure enough they were gone. Do shops get busted quite often, or at all, for selling this sort of stuff?

2 many djs were amazing at glastonbury, i hate the idea of them but they played so many dance hits it was just undeniable. I can safely say I have never seen anything so good in my life nor will I ever again perhaps. it was partly the drugs and the glastonbury feeling but also the music.

It pretty much was... I watched the highlights all weekend without ever wanting to be there. Apart from the Moloko and Roots sets.

the 2ManyDJs things are really good to play at parties, which is definitely a compliment. And yeah you get sick of them after a while... but I get sick of pretty much everything after a while, lose the CD for six months then experience the joy of rediscovery.

six months pass...

I bought that one legal release (#2) at Virgin in New Orleans a couple of years ago...Had no idea there were a whole slew of 'em. I know the rift between vinyl lovers and digital DJs is pretty wide, but I myself have been doing pretty complex digital mixes for a few years on a non-linear editing system under the moniker dj LP3 or Papa Phurph...helluva lotta fun actually! I've spun vinyl for a few years, but wasn't able to make them as packed as the digitally-layered ones. Problem is...there's 2 many tracks to have cleared; It would cost a fortune. So, they sit in limbo...sigh.

they were (both) at fabric a couple of weeks ago. the soulwax set was good fun, they covered daft punk's Teachers, i mean that is obviously a fun thing to do/hear. i like that NY Excuse song too, or a remix of it, i'm not sure. i enjoyed the dj set as well, it was all fairly obvious but i'm not sure if 'no major surprises' is the same as 'lazy and cynical'??

EVERY SINGLE TIME. they're getting paid obscene amounts of money and their set barely changes, even in the space of a year. It's just been difficult to get excited by hearing those songs all together, anymore, I mean at first you could be like "wow da funk, nobody plays that anymore!".

Erol Alkan is everything they ever were times a thousand, and he changes his set from month to month.

i wonder if 2 Many DJs 'loyalty' to certain tracks and segues means they see what they do and their definition of their DJ show as more akin to that of a band's rather than a DJs. there's not necessarily anything wrong this approach, tho they should probably make people more aware of it if that IS indeed their intention.

just really fantastic work. whenever they bring in something obscure they really justify it with the sonic connection, but it's seamless in a way that goes well beyond the level of trivia. although I have to admit, the video for this is gratifying to precisely the archelogist in me: when you see the album covers, you really learn what all these samples that you're already intimately familiar with

Milton, try the free YouTube Downloader (converts vids to mp3s) from cnet.com. Just watch out for the toolbar it wants to install (not required). Or the Switch Sound Coverter (also free, also from cnet) might do it.

I'm actually impressed enough that content like this can appear in the app store! But since it's a stream it falls under the auspices of being 'radio' and not original content that violates other copyrights. Which is good, because it gets distributed. But is also silly, because anyone with half a mind will see this and realize that it damn well is original content.
