Or just some good shit.
Any cool hollywood LA metal bands today?
Were there any LA metal bands in the 80's that used keyboards or drum machines?

Thanks

Most of these bands you probably know, but they were less famous than, like, Motley Crue, I think...

Hanoi Rocks
Odin
Seduce
Sea Hags
Seahags
Shark Island
LA Guns
Faster Pussycat
Kix
Lillian Axe
Vinnie Vincent
Frehley's Comet

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 24 July 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and not all of those are good. Odin, Shark Island, Kix, Lillian Axe suck. LA Guns, Hanoi Rocks, Faster Pussycat, Sea Hags (same as Seahags, I just fucked up, obviously) are good. Vinnie Vincent and Frehley's Comet were fun, but not much better than Autograph or something...

Sliiiick Black Cadillac! ... er, I mean...
Blonds In Black Cars!

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 24 July 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

LA Guns were awesome. and Jackal were sorta cool.

hanoi rocks: totally overrated but totally great.

Pabst Blue Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 July 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I just reacquainted myself with the first Tesla album, Mechanical Resonance, this week. It's been years, but I still remembered almost every word, drum fill, guitar squeal, etc. Sadly, they'll always be remembered for their lame cover of "Signs."

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Thursday, 24 July 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Queensryche?

they were from seattle, of course, but...

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 24 July 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the harder side of things? Would bands like this be considered "overlooked": Sodom, Testament, Death Angel, Vio-Lence, Sacred Reich, Powermad, Coroner, Celtic Frost, Cryptic Slaughter, Voivod... ?

Not sure all of those are "good" bands, but some of them are, anyway.

There was a really cool band from Canada called Barrier Reef that had a damn cool song called "Dinner With Jack" that I've been looking for forever. Kind of punkish and similar to Fang, but metal enough to be on the metal radio show "Power Chords". The lyrics I remember were, "Havin' dinner with Jack, he's got a hook in your back and he's using your head as a coat rack, wallow and bleed strangling screams as he slowly twists the knife into your throat." Great song, eh? Had to hear it, I guess. It wasn't very serious sounding.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 24 July 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

those bands you mentioned - most part of the brief but great "Bay Area Thrash" craze - are not underrated to those of us who'd bother to listen in the first place. I mean, if you don't know who Death Angel are, you probaboy wouldn't like them anyway. Funny enough, tho, I just listened to Frolic Through the Park yesterday for some reason.

Voivod and Celtic Frost don't really fit into that category at all, tho - those motherfuckers are pioneers

i think drain was referring to the popular stuff ... right?

roger adultery, Thursday, 24 July 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Then there were the Ninjas, the Warriors of Rock...but anyway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 July 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

are not underrated to those of us who'd bother to listen in the first place.

Thread says "overlooked", not underrated! My roommate in college got off on my old cassettes of those bands like 5 years after Metallica broke big. He never heard it before.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 24 July 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Whyyyyy-yyy-yyyy ya do this?" ;)

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 24 July 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally second the Sea Hags, and especially Faster Pussycat (though I don't know how accurate it would be to describe them as "overlooked"), whose debut lp STILL kills me (just listened to it a couple months ago)(oh, and also it doesn't have drum machines, but it DOES have turntablism on "Babylon"). Anyway, also pretty good were -

Four Horsemen
Dirty Looks
Wolfsbane
Mary My Hope
Tora Tora
Raging Slab
Bang Tango

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 24 July 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The B'zz, though all I remember is "Get Up, Get Angry".

weatheringdaleson (weatheringdaleson), Thursday, 24 July 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool, I only know 2 of Mr. Diamond's list (the last 2), so I get to look up new stuff now! For some odd reason, I'm thinking Tora Tora and Dirty Looks sound good (I like to judge bands by their names for some reason).

Anyone remember the Killer Dwarfs? Ha, ha.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 24 July 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Tora Tora and Dirty Looks = not necessarily great, but pretty nice AC/DC-derived boogie type rock from what was really the last time that kinda stuff got peddled by the major labels. Also, Dirty Looks was from Rochester, NY so they get points for that!

I remember the name Killer Dwarfs, but I don't believe I ever heard them...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 24 July 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

vandenberg
queensryche were overlooked? there was no escaping silent stupidity.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 24 July 2003 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Nuclear Assault's last two '80's albums were some of the best metal that came out of that decade. All the Sacred Reich and Testament shit from the '80's is worth looking into as well. There's also a never-ending list of great hardcore-metal from the '80's, but I don't know if thats what you're hunting.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 24 July 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny - you mean Survive and Handle With Care? If so, yes, I second, those albums rule.

roger adultery, Thursday, 24 July 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! Survive would have been as perfect as any of the classic Metallica or Slayer albums if it weren't for the fuckin horrible Zeppelin cover tune at the end. Handle With Care is classic too.
John Connelly's voice is so great too.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 24 July 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mace
Nitro -- only O.F.R. -- and it can ONLY be listened to on cassette -- the LP is weak, and the CD is one of the all-time worst-mastered CDs I've heard in my life. Which should be the subject of another thread (and probably already is).

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 July 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, I'll testify. I bought the reissue Nuclear Assault that has both Game Over and Survive (i think) on one disc and it sounded so fuckin' horrible I had to sell it back.

SCcaredy, Thursday, 24 July 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Literally, my Nitro OFR CD (which is an original, maybe 1989?) has to be turned up all the way on my stereo to even approach basic rockin volume -- and then it's nothing but tinny hi-hat wash...just awful.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Bulletboys' "Hang on St Christopher" is the only Tom Waits cover that's ever been worth a shit

dave q, Thursday, 24 July 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Dangerous Toys "Take Me Drunk" = classic. "Met a bitch who said I stunk/ I got a speed stick, damn you're drunk/ She felt good 'round her ass and thigh/ she grabbed me low, I grabbed her high/ sorry mister, didn't know she was your wife"

dave q, Thursday, 24 July 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

FWIW, the s/t Masters of Reality album on Def American circa 1988 is pretty awesome, tho' not necessarily "metal." More straightforward, Southern-fried rock. Delicious Vinyl reissued this in 1990 or so so it should be available.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 24 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

aww, dave, no love for the Rod?

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 24 July 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Laaz Rokkit

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 24 July 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Angkor Watt

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 24 July 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, oh! Armored Saint were really good around the "Chemical Euphoria" time period.

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 24 July 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Raging Slab weren't really hair metal were they? They just sounded like southern rock to me, same goes for the Four Horsemen. Another good band i remember in this vein was a band called Johnny Law who only released one self-titled album.

bob thorn, Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Congratulations, Bob, you're the first person to use the word "hair" on this entire thread.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 24 July 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the second angkor wat album was excellent, or at least it seemed that way in high school. first one wasn't bad. plus you can't have everything no-neck blues band related without them.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Precious Metal..."That Kind of Girl" especially. No less than the female Def Leppard, in the best possible way. Think Runaways with brains.

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Felcher - no

dave q, Friday, 25 July 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

fourteen years pass...

Did I really not post in this thread back in the day? Huh.

Anyway. Saw LA Guns last night - Phil and Tracii and three other players - and it was fantastic. Phil (who is 60!!) sounded really spry, Tracii's playing was still bonkers good (I love the melodicism of even his more squalling solos), the band's chemistry was very tight, the rhythm guitarist did an unbelievable "Purple Rain." They have an album coming out in October and the two new songs they played fit right into the set - one is a bluesy Animals/Rolling Stones hybrid ballad, and "Speed" (the single) is a nice snarling rocker a la "Rip and Tear" and "One More Reason."

maura, Sunday, 30 July 2017 15:03 (eight years ago)

I'm afraid I had nothing to say abut LA Guns, and I doubt you are interested in me posting my dislike, I instead responded to the OP and reply, which was a list

Odysseus, Sunday, 30 July 2017 15:12 (eight years ago)

Plus it's a quiet sunday, give people who will reply to you a chance to post

Odysseus, Sunday, 30 July 2017 15:13 (eight years ago)

I missed the L.A. Guns post. I got into them last year after seeing GNR. the debut mostly. good stuff with a bit more teeth than the rest of the scene.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 30 July 2017 15:36 (eight years ago)

This is now the Enuff Z'Nuff thread. Side note I should be seeing the LA Guns right now in Reading PA, but they postponed their show....UNTIL FEBRUARY 2018!

DavidLeeRoth, Sunday, 30 July 2017 21:15 (eight years ago)

Vain - No Respect is an amazing missing link between DAD & LA Guns, great songwriting

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 30 July 2017 21:22 (eight years ago)

Yeah I saw that DLR :( But I think they'll be touring even before that, since the record's out in October
