C90: Happy Summer Hip-Hop Tape

Let's make a song of happy hip hop songs. I'm thinking of bouncy, top-down, "yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaah nigggggggggggggga" type stuff. I'd rather no Tribe/De La Soul stuff but not particularly bothered. Oh and it's actually a tape not a CD-R so i reckon about 20 songs per side. The music can be happy or the lyrics can be happy whatever!

1. 'Shine' Lil' Wayne (What? They dun heard me... I said I got so much cake like everyday my birthday!)
2. 'All About U' 2 Pac
3. Jay Z 'IZZO (hova)'
4. Lil Bow Wow 'Basketball'

now you go

sean g, Thursday, 24 July 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

5. Lumidee feat. Busta and Fabolous - "Never Let You Go"
6. Skee Lo - "I Wish"
7. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - "Summertime"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 July 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(Actually, Will Smith owns happy summer hip-hop: "Miami", "Get Jiggy With It", "I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson", "Parents Just Don't Understand", "Wild Wild West", "Men In Black", etc etc etc.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 July 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Souls Of Mischief '93 Til Infinity' is happy summery f'shizzle, but not in the same vein as that tacky lowrider rollin' g-funk stuff tho

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU CANT BE HAPPY AND NOT ROLL IN A TACKY LOWRIDER SILLY

sean g, Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Timbaland & Magoo - Clock Strikes
Erick Sermon - Bomdigi

>>(Actually, Will Smith owns happy summer hip-hop: "Miami", "Get Jiggy With It", "I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson", "Parents Just Don't Understand", "Wild Wild West", "Men In Black", etc etc etc.)<<

Why he REALLY owns it is "Summertime," though....

chuck, Thursday, 24 July 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

missy elliot - back in the day

brains (cerybut), Thursday, 24 July 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Three great ones that nobody else will remember, I bet:

Lighter Shade of Brown -- On a Sunday Afternoon
Brotherhood Creed -- Helluva
A.L.T. and the Lost Civilization -- Tequila

And hell, almost anything from 1981, 1982, or East Los Angeles...

chuck, Friday, 25 July 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, somebody beat me to "Summertime"; didn't notice that til now. Still, God, what a great song. Will Smith's summer beats your decade.

chuck, Friday, 25 July 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember helluva chuck...
and will nominate
ice cube - you know how we do it

gaz (gaz), Friday, 25 July 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

And oh yeah, every single song L'Trimm and the Real Roxanne ever did.

And more than a few by the Fat Boys, while you're at it.

chuck, Friday, 25 July 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

oh fuck Will Smith and his 'Summertime', just put on 'DJ Premier In Deep Concentration' and freestyle over it yourself

stevem (blueski), Friday, 25 July 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess 'Regulate' would figure tho

stevem (blueski), Friday, 25 July 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

funky four + one - thats the joint

gaz (gaz), Friday, 25 July 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember "Tequila." Was big hit back in the day. I believe he references the ancient "we were rolling around on Strawberry Hill" joke if I'm not mistaken.

I know De La Soul is a bit verboten, but I'd undoubtedly put their "Eye Know" song on the mix.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 25 July 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Let Me Clear My Throat --- DJ Kool
Simon Says --- Pharaohe Monch
these are the scientifically proven 2 best happy summer rap tracks.

Move, Bitch ---Ludacris
Money, Cash, Hoes ---JayZ (radio edit is better, goes "money, cash... moneycash"), crazy synth blurts, dmx
Kick in the Door ---Biggie sounds so happy terrorizing smartypants rappers, + Screamin' Jay sample

autovac (autovac), Friday, 25 July 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

People Under the Stairs--"Mid City Fiesta"

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 July 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

'Helluva' and 'Tequila', shit I remember them. High school. I was the only guy who could read the Tribe Called Quest logo drawn on the wall. 'OPP', Naughty by Nature? Happy from what I remember

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, somebody beat me to "Summertime"; didn't notice that til now.

Haha, yeah. Clearly "Summertime" is the ultimate Will-summer song, but listing that reminded me of all of his other summer jams.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Urban Dance Squad- "A Deeper Shade of Soul"

Magic City (ano ano), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly the UDS song of choice is "Fast Lane"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Imani Coppola - Legend Of A Cowgirl
2Pac - I Ain't Mat Atcha
that Joe Budden song

'Summertime' is the key track though.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Eyed Peas "Let's Get Retarded" best party song I've heard in a while

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"ELECTRIC RELAXATION" YOU POXY FULES!

(although many many fine choices so far, don't get me wrong)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Amazed nobody (including me yesterday) has mentioned "Around the Way Girl" or "Boomin' System" by LL Cool J. Not to mention "Nuthin' But a G Thang" by Dre and "Gin and Juice" by Snoop, for the very summery videos, if nothing else...

chuck, Friday, 25 July 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

UGK - One Day

Esquire1983 (esquire1983), Sunday, 27 July 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

NBN - Jamboree

Vincent Vern, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
Raphael Saddiq - Get Involved
Souls of Mischief - 92 Til Infinity (someone already said it)
Dove Shack - Summertime in the LBC
Nate Dogg - Never Leave Me Alone...tacky, but has a good beat.
Roscoe - Smooth Sailin'

Ahh yes, nothing does a good summer song like the West Coast. :)

Bay B-Girl, Sunday, 9 May 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Boorish and crass in its sheer disregard for the human condition, "hip-hop" music is disgusting as a sheer affront to the human race.

Jean-Luc (Jean-Luc), Sunday, 9 May 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Having just watched Office Space, I'd say the Geto Boys' "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta" would fit on this tape just fine.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 9 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

so here's the one i just made for my laaaaadyyy...

1. slum village feat odb - flexible
2. javier - crazy
3. common feat mary j blige - come close (broken beat remix)
4. rza - grits
5. carl thomas - make it alright
6. cassidy feat mashonda - get no better
7. joe feat g-unit - ride with u
8. beyonce feat sean paul - baby boy (drum and bass remix)
9. nas - heaven (nasjazz remix)
10. ghostface feat missy - tush
11. franz ferdinand - take me out (morgan geist remix)
12. busta rhymes feat chingy, fat joe, nick cannon - shorty
13. nerd - she wants to move (dfa remix)
14. kelis - milkshake (tom neville remix)

i think the first 2/3 fits the thread best - the last 1/3 is summery in the intensely-overheated sense and happy in the gleefully stomping sense. if i'd had my head on straight i'd have added usher's "let it burn", which isn't really summery or happy but probably will define summer 2004 anyway ... and maybe some dancehall but i haven't been keeping up so well since last year. i'm not so crazy about the new TOK or mr vegas or elephant man tracks so i didn't know what to put on.

what am i missing (2004-wise?)
