A new stereolab single! Having WinMX'd the whole album I've been dying to scavenge for opinions for a good months. For what it's worth, the sound is of Stereolab having done some kind of evaopration experiment in the following mould;

Apologies to the poor diagram. My Morpheused Photoshop is full of bugs and entirely inoperational. And regardless this diagram probably bears little correlation to the chemistry experiment i'm thinking of whereby one separates water from a solution. By which I mean, they have experimented with borrowed sounds since maybe '92 and now seem to have seperated those from the Stereolab charachter reading them, and we are now listening to the latter. On the other hand, there is a feeling of almost a lounge album five years out of date, the most conventionally melodic Stereolab I remember.

the college station here has been playing a few songs and they remind me of the stuff on 'mars audiac content'. it does seem loungier and funny enough almost all of the lyrics can be picked out quite easily. i find it lovely.

I do think it sounds much better than most of Mars Audiac, simply die to their having had six years since then to learn their way round melodies. 'Nothing to do with me' being a particular example, all those Chris Morris lines so submerged.

Cute diagrams. I dunno about the EP but Soundust is great and currently in my walkman at all times.

Ethan, that bears naught but tangenial relevance to the question.

But it's so pretty. Should there be an FT feature consisting of nothing but reviews as drawings?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes.

Ned, that's a genuinely excellent idea. I think it deserves it's own thread to discuss the plausibility of it. WHat should the title be?

matthew james, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Drawing Conclusions" or "PopSketch" or "The DiaGrammys" or "PictuReview" or "Drawillaz". Gotta have a bad pun in there somewhere..

80s porn? you bounder.

More diagrams! Yes! You could have a competition where the central object is blanked out and we have to guess what the influences lead to...or something. So much satirical hilarity just waiting to be abused.

I'm still wondering about the damn lamp. The Aquaman reference in the 1st diagram makes more sense.

Nick, you are turk

three months pass...
i am reviving this for us to marvel at ethan's now-fallow diagrammatical skillz.
