Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh? Avril not in Best Punk Video category?

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never understood why there's a Best Rap AND Best Hip Hop...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

As we are all aware that MTV is totally soulless, my choices won't win anyway, but:

Best group video

Coldplay - The Scientist: Love any vid that allows you to recover from the worst day in your life;

Breakthrough video

Queens of Stone Age - No One Knows: As this vid is...gasp...original [no rumpshakers], fat chance of this winning. However, when the deer can become the hunter, insead of the hunted, I can only applaud.

Best special effects in a video

Radiohead - There There: My love for Radiohead regardless, this vid is fabulous! It takes the "seeing the forest from the trees" motif, and twists it around. (In which case, it should win for Best Editing, as well).

As for the rest, P. Diddy or JLo will prolly sweep, as per usual.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never understood why there's a Best Rap AND Best Hip Hop...

Most likely, Best Hip Hop respresents the refined gangsta, whereas Best Rap is more street.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hip-hop allows for singing (hence Beyonce's nomination).

If Mya doesn't win the dance awards, I will have to get all Mr. Stabby on something. Also, they need to scrap whatever patter they have and show that Beyonce video on continuous loop.

J-Lo is more played than an old Lite-Brite. She will win nothing.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahahahaha, is johnny cash even going to attend????????????
man, i feel embarassed for him.

also, why do they even bother having ''technical'' awards?

p.p.s. i love the concept of the floetic video.... just thought i'd give props.

reo fordecor, Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That Kenna video is classic; it's too bad it's attached to his worst song.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

why is "Work It" in hip-hop and not rap? There's no more singing in that than "In Da Club."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 July 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was a music forum.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 24 July 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

why is "Work It" in hip-hop and not rap? There's no more singing in that than "In Da Club."

my point exactly, whatever they can't fit in one they just stick in the other as a failsafe to appease the industry now so dominated by acts under the hip hop banner.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 July 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate how Best Dance is effectively the same as Best R & B as well. MTV US truly sucketh the big one.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 July 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

chapterhouse are getting the lifetime achievement award

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 25 July 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Cash should win every category in which he's nominated, and even those in which he isn't. Avril Lavigne and Jennifer Lopez should not be given any further encouragement to continue their careers in "entertainment".

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Friday, 25 July 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Cash should win every category in which he's nominated, and even those in which he isn't.

This was going to be my post!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 25 July 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That white stripes video is really cool visually.

did they win last year for Fell in Love... ?

Eminem looks to clean up.

That Good Charlotte song with the Blur ripoff chorus (dunno if that is the same one nominated) is GOD AWFUL.

tk, Friday, 25 July 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(Be careful, Good Charlotte; the ghosts of Annapolis punk rock past are coming to KICK YOUR ASSES!)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 25 July 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

People that should win even if they are not nominated.
The yeah yeah yeahs..best female..in everything, the hell with avril, she's as punk as michael jackson is rap.
Steven Malkmus and the Jicks..best new band, hell the should give steven the best male award
Henry Rollins, life time achievement award
Dennis Leary, the host
The Flaming Lips...ehhh.. hey I just want them to win something
Bjork..she should appear out of no where and start kicking britney's, jennifer's and avril's ass like she did with that reporter years ago
Cat Power, uhh..another best female award?, best sad song award? not likely but I just want her happy for once, call me a sentimental sap
Strapping young lad...Devin Townsend is a mental metal genius (quote from Cacaman Flores)
Actually The White Stipes are nominated and alongside with Queens of the Stone Age, Cash, Radio Head (although their last cd isn't half as great as The bends or OK computer)and Metallica (well Master of Puppets and Unforgiven still make wanna cry out violent sad and destructive/ self-hatred happiness..besides I kinda liked last cd).

And the reason they make a best hip-hop and rap category is because they need space to occupy so the SAME PEOPLE WIN OVER AND OVER FOR DOING THE SAME CRAP. What happened to metal and alternative? are those no longer music categories?.

OH yeah..and am back

Siñor N.K. Loveless (Siñor N.K. Loveless), Friday, 25 July 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

MTV should fuck off and die!!!
...
Voivod rules!

Cacaman Flores (Siñor N.K. Loveless), Friday, 25 July 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Breakthrough video: Coldplay - "The Scientist"

Didn't Spike Jonze do this for The Pharcyde's "Drop" video years ago?

The whole backwards thing?

Hmmmm....

tk, Friday, 25 July 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Rap is something you DO, Hip Hop is something you LIVE

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

JC Chasez - Blowing Me Up (With Her Love)
is this for real?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Breakthrough video: Coldplay - "The Scientist"
Didn't Spike Jonze do this for The Pharcyde's "Drop" video years ago?

Exactly.

If Johnny Cash goes, I hope he stomps out all the lights on stage.

David Allen, Friday, 25 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Any performers announced yet?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 25 July 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Why didn't you include the nominees for:
Best Hair in a Video
Best Hair in a HipHop Video
Best Hair in a Rap Video
Best Hair in a Pop Video
Best Navel in a Video
Best Navel in a HipHop Video
Best Navel in a Rap Video
Best Navel in a Pop Video
Best use of sportswear in a video .....

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 25 July 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It just seems pointless to criticise something like the VMAs (the VMAs, for chrissake!) in terms of quality... quality is something which just has nothing to do with it. I mean, much as I'd love Cat Power to sweep the board, to even type that seems a waste of time. Really, all I can hope for is a sexy Justin live performance.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 25 July 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

If Johnny Cash wins I seriously think I'll shit myself. With joy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 25 July 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Johnny kind of a shoe-in? (Unless Avril Lavigne is voting..)

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 25 July 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(or is that shoo-in?) Or Shue-in?,, shew-in? schwinn?

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 25 July 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Lacey Chabert was on Party of Five, I believe she has a record out or soon to be out. $50 says she'll be at the Awards.
I was continuing the phonics game of "SH"sounding names.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 July 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

dave's category ideas are OT$.
i'm partial to eminem's video cos it shows such beautiful sweeping shots of the detroit skyline! woo!

praying mantis (praying mantis), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 25 July 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Annapolis punk rock past? What's that? Jimmie's Chicken Shack? Projekt Gizmo? Who was from Annapolis? Not Good Charlotte, anyway, they're from Calvert County or some shit. And as such, they probably have a pretty good shot at "Best Punk Band Ever from Calvert County." If they were from Bel Air or Towson, they'd have a lot better reason to be skerred.

The lose yourself video is real, real bad. Actually, come to think of it, most Eminem videos are, much as I love him. They're either all grainy with him looking all serious and yelling at the camera and thus boring ("Sing for the Moment," "The Way I Am") or contrived attempts at zany with lots of lameass humor that's supposed to be topical but just ends up taking bad shots at easy targets like Monica Lewinsky and Survivor ("My Name Is," "Without Me"). And the Matrix effects in the "Guilty Conscience" video are real shitty.
