Second Comings

Which bands/artists etc have made *successful* comebacks after years of being AWOL? I didn't mean to suggest The Stone Roses in the subject line, but it does seem to be a quite obvious comeback - but in your opinion, was it successful? You know, musical brilliance etc.

Scott Walker's 'Tilt'. After some time of being the artful lounger, the smooth dream pop, he returns entirely contrary to anything in his past and reputation, with a record perfectly realised, in minute detail. One to most ears, tremendously difficult, I gather. 'Farmer in the City' is quite woth an 11 year wait.

I nominate Kraftwerk's next record on the strength of 'Expo 2000', unless it's something along the lines of The Mix, you know, wonderful records made shit by ignoring the contextual shift.

Comsat Angels. A wasteland of pisspoor records and inactivity between '84 and '91, until returning triumphantly in '92.

prefab sprout's comeback album 'andromeda heights' was a nice return, if not completely triumphant. every time the clean come back it is a huge success. i am anxious to hear bark psychosis' 'dustsucker' later this year.

Matthew - a new Kraftwerk record?I wish. No,I've given up wishing for it actually.

The ever amazing Etta James with her "At Last!" LP in 1961.

I am a dog in heat for that Bark Psychosis record. The only news that could have topped that info would've been the discovery of a lost Joy Division record.

Andy, Saturday, 4 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, wasn't New Order the second coming of Joy Division, after all? Not years maybe, but some very long months between the two. But it was sort of as if John the Baptist came AFTER Jesus.

Marianne Faithfull-Broken English

I got a review of the Kraftwerk Expo 2000 theme that said it was only a robot voice saying 'Expo - 2000 - Expo - 2000 - ' etc. What did anyone else think of it?

maryann, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Arthur Your taste in Music is divine. Marianne is the queen of the comeback

Well Expo 2000 was essentially as simple as other Kraftwerk records. Difference between that and ELectric cafe/the mix was that they'd learned their way around digital tachnology. Much like pre-Autobahn K spent a few records finding out what could be done with analogue. So it's a little harder and less melodic and gentle. But rather great.

Dylan's "Time Out of Mind" and Johnny Cash's American records represent comebacks of sorts, both based on their producers' decisions to let an old man sound like an old man.

Andre Williams has come back from complete obscurity to semi- obscurity through his collaboratons with modern garage rockers. Similar deal for RL Burnside.

Buzzcocks and Echo & the Bunnymen

I would say Shaun Ryder, because I intensely loved Black Grape's first album after I was sure that none of the Happy Mondays would ever be relevant again.

Merle Haggard.

I want Public ENemy to be in this category so badly.

Just saw Roxy Music last night... dunno if they qualify as "comeback" since it's 18 years since their last LP, and don't think they're planning a new one, but they sounded amazing. It actually mean a lot to have one of my boyhood heroes put on such a great show.
