Surely the purveyors of "Part of The Union" are in many ways the ultimate ilm band?

No wait I'm lieing through my teeth. Still what d'ya think?

I recently picked up the two CD comp covering their early years and while it was a bit overwhelming all at once it was definitely an enjoyable listen with some winners -- their other singles were really something, one in particular I thought spectacular (but not enough to remember the name off hand, alas!), while many of the album cuts were at least enjoyable indirect listening. I suppose they semi-cornered the prog/folk/pop market along with Fairport or something?

Years ago I approached them since I heard Sandy Denny had been a member and heard some awful whingy 70's folk-rock and ran away. Having gotten the 2CD Halcyon Days some of it is still a bit grating. I think I'm not a fan of Dave Cousins vocals. I'm still not sure that that they sound much like Fairport Convention - though I have erased from my mind all post Denny or Thompson Fairport’s albums and actually they may well be a bit like that.

I heard this one song by the Strawbs, and I realized that Metallica's "Sanitarium" of a total rip-off of it. Anyone know what song I'm talking about?

just a collection of antiques & curious is the only album i know. and it is absolutely gorgeous. chamber rock which has aged well. i never got into yes, elp, wakeman and i never got into fairport convention, pentangle, sandy denny (though her voice was heart-breaking) and all that but this album is so sweet.

Wow, this is a blast from the past. Haven't heard them in years, but (I seem to recall the 1st 4 records being really good. I also liked Barclay James Harvest....

four years pass...

We have Grave New World on vinyl, and I listen to it often. It's really good.

only one i've ever heard is hero and heroine, and it's pretty damn fly. i've always had a hard time finding their stuff for some reason

there has been some discussion of them on the hard rock thread. i saw john ford do "part of the union" a couple weeks ago in a local public library with ian lloyd. don't ask.
