According to Salon, Merle Haggard's new song is sharply critical of how the U.S. media is covering the war in Iraq. On his website, Mr. Haggard also defends the Dixie Chicks and slags those who gave them flack for speaking their opinion of Bush.

i've not heard a note of this song, fwiw. i hope that it's really good. needless to say, my (already high) opinion of mr. haggard has gone higher.

Totally. He rules. I haven't heard the song either but can't wait. What's the title? It's not coming out on Epitaph or Fat Possum or anything is it?

"The goings on are stiiiiiiiil goin' on...."

I've liked Merle's recent output more than I've like that of Cash. While I respect Cash, the whole adulation thing feels at times like a sideshow, a geek show even. Agesploitation of a sort.

comparing the dixie chicks backlash to lynching is a laff. there is no right to have everyone agree with you. they were never under any threat other than plummeting record sales, oooo totalitarianism is scary. not sure which media he is watching, every news broadcast is starting with the daily death count in iraq and is attempting to portray a country out of control.

"The Best of Merle Haggard" (or later on "The Best of the Best of Merle Haggard") or better yet "Songs I'll Always Sing".
And if you like that, try to find a copy of "A Tribute to the Best Damn Fiddle Player in the World (Or My Salute to Bob Wills)"

This is all still fresh in my mind, because I was making a Classic Country comp for gaz.

When I saw Eugene Chadbourne in France last month he opened his set with Merle's "Wishin' All These Old Things Were New" - hearing Merle HAggard songs covered often points up for me just how solid the songs themselves are.
