to get the ball rolling...

simian fever - six finger sattelite monkey man - toots & the maytals/the specials you drive me ape, you big gorilla - the dickies

vs.

funky chicken - rufus thomas chicken - sly stone run, chicken, run - link wray

= a victory for the apes.

shurely not! sounds like a win for the chickens, to me. One of the few truly universal truths about music is that there are no bad songs about chicken. More examples:

the Greasy Chicken - Andre Williams Crow Black Chicken - Skip James / Ry Cooder Chicken Strut - the Meters Chicken Rhythm - Slim Gaillard

now, songs about monkeys are good, too. They're just not as good as songs about chickens. Why? Cause songs about chicken are often about eating them. Which reminds me, time for breakfast. Maybe some chicken- fried chicken. With a little chicken on the side.

Hockey Monkey - James Kochalka Superstar
Monkey vs. Robot - James Kochalka Superstar
Hot Rod Monkey - James Kochalka Superstar
Monkey Drum Solo - James Kochalka Superstar

All on the album Monkey vs. Robot, that must be a record for the most songs abou monkey's by any one artist!

Is it just me, or was there a point in the 50s and early 60s where every other song seemed to be about monkies or chickens?? The weirdest thing of all is how they even developed sub-genres (King Kong songs, etc.)

It's like the aural equivalent of those old DC comics where Batman fought Mongo the Bat-Ape or the Legion of Super Chickens. (Okay, I made that last one up.)

there's a great issue of savage dragon where brainiape (big gorilla with hitler's brain in an exposed glass bubble) fights powerhouse (big chicken guy) in a diner. when powerhouse wins, all of the bystanders are very grateful not to be slaughtered by this evil monkey, and one says, 'excuse me, what can we do to repay you?' powerhouse : 'next time you go out, order the beef'.

I vote monkey, if only because of the song "Helpful Monkey Wallpapers Entire Home" by Jad Fair & Yo La Tengo.

Songs about monkeys: funny. Songs about chickens: funky.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mr clover: surely you know better than to imply that funkiness and funniness are mutually exclusive... especially where chimps and chickens are involved. lee perry's "super ape" lp, anyone?

fritz, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chicken - mississipi john hurt...what about bovines?

Geoff, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, if 'monkey songs' mean anything about simians, then shouldn't the 'chicken' genre include "Disco Duck", "Jive Turkey"? Not to mention "Lay Lady Lay". Boom fucking boom!

'One Vision' by Queen - listen to what Freddie says at the end.

dave q, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Kinks - "Ape Man" (great ode to simian irresponsibility)

The Rolling Stones - "Monkey Man" (arguably their finest hour, to my ears)

Devo - "Jocko Homo" ("god made man, but a monkey supplied the glue")

versus....

The Cramps - "Chicken" (an ode to fried poultry off A DATE WITH ELVIS)

~Waiting for someone to come along and nit-pick on the semantic distinctions between monkeys, apes, simians, primates, etc...~

Nitsuh, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ok, nitpickers... the thread title defines the rules... all primates and all poultry are acceptable.

the mummies - (you must fight to live) on the planet of the apes

jackie lee - do the duck

Songs about chickens are better. Because the dances you can do to them are more far-out. "woop woop! chicken chicken! woop woop! chicken head!"

Tracer Hand, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's easy pickins! Ain't nobody here but us chickennnnns!
