Winston Churchill: What's On Your Walkman?

British war leader. Icon of late imperialism. Sent army to shoot miners to preserve sainted status quo (small letters). Young man today. What does he dig?

Robin, I think you may have weighted that question a little unfairly. And all these Walkman questions, while a wonderful theme, seem to be about rightwing leaders. But as a man of imperialist terndancies in an increasingly liberal age I should expect he'd like the dead rock music that wasn't a part of his youth but figured in the days of the birth of his opinions. So, yeah, crap rock music. That's a disappointing answer, I know. I'm off to ask a walkman question about someone we might like.

Sorry Matthew, I don't quite understand this sentence, assuming by opinions you mean his political and moral viewpoint surely they are formed in his youth. I know peoples political viewpoints change over time (as did Churchills to some extent) but the influences that *initially* shaped them won't change.
As for what he dig's, probably nothing much. Too busy working in futures or some such thing to care much about music therefore whatever big thing is doing the rounds eg Coldplay, Robbie, Craig David plus last night of the proms.

I think he'd like the Kinks and Pink Floyd. Though he'd think Roger Waters is a bolshie prat.

Manic Street Preachers, "Intense Humming of Evil". All conservatives seem to love publicity of any kind.

"Aces High" by Iron Maiden...if only for his cameo

Obviously no-one forms worldview prior to birth, yeah. But what i was saying was his opinions were suited to another age. And imperialist in a non-imperial age. Hardcore marxists are the worst for this syndrome, espousing a philosophy that has shown itself to fail a number of times even centuries ago when it was relevant to the socio- political situation. It's like free market capitalism never existed!

matthew james, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah fair enough Matthew. I see what you're driving at now. I'm a bit slow. In that case he'd probably listen to a rousing Sousa or probably one of Winnie's great mate Noel Coward.
