Each song was either released somewhere or charted somewhere in 1981. Most of them were singles.

The first person who can tell me the person I ripped off for the subtitle of the CDR wins a copy. (Hint: It came from a review of another single by the group at 001.)

Feel free to tell me where I went wrong.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Respect to Nate.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys are insane! what's your method? Surely you don't go through all the songs you like and check each one to see if it's from 1981 (or whatever year)?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 26 July 2003 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

No Dexy's?

Orange Juice?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys are insane! what's your method?

Other than my own head, the other primary sources were the Billboard charts and George Gimarc's Post-Punk Diary.

Haha Nick -- all were considered. There was so much going on that year that I could've done at least two more CDRs of songs I love.

(Orange Juice had only two singles that I know of, neither of which I like enough.)

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard two of these songs

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 26 July 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fall - Middle Mass
Smokey Robinson - Being With You
Odyssey – Going Back To My Roots

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You considered Ghost Town and rejected it? Blimey.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

We will have to trade! But you could only fit 100 songs on a CDR?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the lack of "ghost town" is just baffling

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything's at 192kbps -- it all came out to 693MB. 28 songs are over six minutes in length, including several that exceed eight. I wanted to keep it to 100 anyway, so it worked out perfectly.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No "Pearl Necklace" either! Or AC/DC! "Memorabilia" over "Tainted Love"?

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The Go-Go's - Our Lips Are Sealed

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Blondie - Rapture

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

No Gap Band? No Lionel Richie? No Kim Carnes?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

And isn't Nick Straker '82?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd probably have REM's debut on there too (Sitting Still rather than Radio Free Europe just cause I've never been that mad about RFE.)

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite all the slagging, I wish I had a copy of this, but sadly I have no idea about the Associates reference.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh hey I'm not slagging! I want a copy want a copy want a copy!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

1981 was the year I bought my first ever record (Kraftwerk's The Model b/w Computer Love) so I feel kind of protective about it.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Our Lips Are Sealed": Yet another one that was strongly considered!

"The Raptue": Just sick of hearing it, and it's definitely one of my least favorite Blondie singles to begin with.

Gap Band: Slightly regretful that "Burn Rubber" isn't on here; will definitely make up for it if any other early '80s years are done.

Lionel Richie: No "Endless Love"! Oh well.

Kim Carnes: I just can't get over the proto-Tricky rasp.

REM: NFW.

Nick Straker: It might've come out as early as '79 (several issues on several labels), but it was #1 on the Billboard club chart at some point during '81.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha let's see how many ways ILM can mis-spell rapture ratpure raptue rapier, etc.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: REM. Well, yeah I guess that confirms that you're not trying to anything but compile a personal list (which I wouldn't argue with).

Further to the Nick Straker question: does that also mean you don't include tracks from 1981 albums if they weren't released as singles until later?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Or would you only be that tight if you were planning on a series of these and didn't want to duplicate?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Custos: No you don't and no. (It's a direct quote.)

N.: Yes, it's very personal. To answer your question, I don't think there are any cases of that.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Custos: No you don't and no. (It's a direct quote.)
Damn!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

And the answer to the other question: It's quite possible that I'll do other years, but I won't duplicate any songs. Other year-specific CDRs were a constant thought in the back of my head as I made this. I could have rationalized including Was (Not) Was' "Wheel Me Out" (charted in '81) and "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming" (released in '81) on this disc, but I wound up going with "Out Come the Freaks" (charted in '81) just so I can include "Wheel Me Out" on the 1980 disc (going by release date) and "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming" on the 1982 disc (going by the year of chart placement). I love all three songs dearly, and I want to keep a strict one-song-per-artist rule with each year.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The quote I stole isn't Google-able, btw. (The only result you get is some page with West Wing fan fiction on it.)

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Bugger! Damn!
(Actually...I figured that out. 'Associates' is a nearly Googleproof bandname.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 26 July 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the problem is that the phrase itself comes up with barely anything.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I found an 'another year of the single life' on some blog via alltheweb and some other crap on Google Groups.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Madness
)-:
-- N. (nickdastoo...), July 26th, 2003.

Yeah, I thought that too... but goodness, what goodness anyway. I love lists. ;-). Erm, Heavens.

Ah, just noticed: it has a later-to-be Madness song, at least :p

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 26 July 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

No Police?

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 26 July 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

This is where Andy finally goes 'Shit, how could I have forgotten the Police??' and I lose faith in the whole thing.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"Invisible Sun" just missed the cut. I reckon "When the World...," "Walking on the Moon" and "Roxanne" are locks for their respective years.

What I'm most unhappy with is the lack of reggae. Most of the reggae I have is pre-'80s, and so few of the compilations I own have info beyond artist/title.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 26 July 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Get Tim Hopkins on the case.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 26 July 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

What published author... would've reviewed an Associates single... in 1981?

Hint hint...

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 27 July 2003 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

so it's Paul Morley in an NME review of...Kitchen Person?

scott pl. (scott pl.), Sunday, 27 July 2003 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha i tried to google it and got my article on magazine

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 27 July 2003 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And, with that post from scott pl., we have a winner! (It was for "Tell Me Easter's on Friday.")

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 27 July 2003 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, hooray!! All my years of hard work are finally paying off. Sheesh, talk about 'right place, right time' after that hint. I did try to find my "post-punk diary" to see if the mystery review was quoted there, but then I just sort of gave up and wondered why I'd put that book in a box in a storage room in the first place. (strongo, I'll send you a copy.)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Sunday, 27 July 2003 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't realize that the new Morley book was just published. Thank you, NYLPM!

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 27 July 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I still fail to realise why you peopel are constantly doing these lists.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 28 July 2003 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

you all do realize that the gauntlet for '84 is being thrown.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 28 July 2003 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

and also that now that my CDs are on the way to Seattle from NYC--and that I'm converting them to MP3 for personal use--I will have A LOT of options year- and choice-wise for doing this kind of thing myself.

just a warning.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 28 July 2003 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

btw Andy K I kiss you. whatever can I do for one of these babies?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 28 July 2003 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, "Beat Bop" is fucking '83!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

and "Houses in Motion" is '80 (though I'm guessing it was a *single* a year later)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

A few alternatives

Dollar - hand held (in black and white)
Venom - Evil (in league with Satan)
Clint Eastwood and General saint - Another one bites the dust
Sugar Minott - Good thing going
Aztec Camera - Mattress of wire
Heaven 17 - (We don't need this) fascist groove thang

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 28 July 2003 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess with "Beat Bop" I was going on the fact that it's given a (p) date of '81. And it's also on the Downtown '81 sdtk (which, I know, didn't exist in '81), but that was enough for me. Oh well.

"Houses in Motion" was released as a single in the UK in May of '81. It's a bit of a cheat... I do take liberties with my "released somewhere" disclaimer.

I do this because it is loads of fun. These things will be great for road trips.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhat U&K question: Does the original '81 version of "Tears Are Not Enough" differ a great deal from the one on Lexicon of Love? I'm assuming the Trevor Horn-produced version is superior...

Dr. C... Tom...? Anyone?

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't answer that one definitively, Andy. I'm guessing structurally they are almost the same, but the LP version is a lot more polished-sounding. I do know I loathed the single when it first came out - I heard it at the time as similar but far inferior to "Favourite Shirts" (and that should be in the 100 btw) - but when I finally bought Lexicon last year discovered it was one of my favourite songs on there.

Great list, incidentally. In addition to some omissions already suggested, I would add, among others:

Robert Wyatt - Born Again Cretin
Rip Rig and Panic - Go Go Go! This Is It
Pigbag - Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Jeff. Never cared much for "......Pigbag" but if that's the RRP tune I think it is, I definitely erred. And I know I've got "Born Again Cretin" somewhere...

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
this is just so fucking educational.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 28 September 2003 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

1981 was the year I was born so I feel kind of protective about it.

the blue nile's 'I love this life'?

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 28 September 2003 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

its a precious year for me too and i remember buying riprig&panic's gogogo and the birthday paty's release the bats on the same day! (the week they came out, i think...)
so i'd vote friend catcher out, rtb in!

No, not yet.
Special notice specifically aimed towards Andy K:

Thank you for your attention.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

nah. but I must stay (as I said to db the other day irl) that Tom E's idea of making a history of pop through mix CDs seems to be coming true one year at a time.

not threat, treat. I'd really love to see folks start doing themed comps of this sort as well as by-year ones. (Jen Nstop, for instance, should really do the definitive indie-pop MP3 mix. and so on)
