Just wondering what people think of Grandaddy.

James, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the idea of Grandaddy but it all comes out sounding dull and insipid.

philT, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They seem unpopular in these parts, but I quite like the Sophtware Slump even if it did steal a page or so from OK Computer.. Minus 2 or 3 duds on it, it was quite a solid album.

bnw, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Sophtware Slump is one of those records that you can really love but still not be bothered if you never heard it again. AM180 is incredible of course.

Graham, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pleasant but utterly forgettable.

Melissa W, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They're a bit dull, really.

Nick Southall, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the same record seems to get recycled between the bands dave fridman (sp?) works with first mercury rev, then flaming lips, then grandaddy and delgadoes and now i suppose it is mercury rev's turn once more.

the beards are also a negative.

keith, Sunday, 5 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you kidding? The beards are totally CLASSIC.

I've always "kinda like them". But when I saw them perform live, I went home and listened to Sophtware Slump and it clicked with me. Well, for about a week it did. This is the kind of album I can put on for 7 days straight and not listen to it for months, and then repeat cycle.

alex in montreal, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think they'd be spectactular if their records weren't a bit spotty. All three contain brilliant moments right up front that trick your brain into deciding they're wonderful -- but three months later, when it dawns on you that you rarely listen to them straight through, if at all, you dig them out and notice a whole lot of useless moments.

That said, I was pretty taken with Under the Western Freeway and enjoyed The Sophtware Slump, so I have hope that they'll pull together something a little more solid in the coming years.

Nitsuh, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whenever I read articles about them or check out a website they seem to concentrate on the fact that they're from the central valley of california where nothing much happens. It's all agriculture. They built a studio out in the boondocks and chose not to move to one of the big cities. I don't think that's something that they push, but Virgin 2 and whoever is interviewing them seems to get into it. They're also bigger in Europe than in the U.S.

I borrowed the CD from a coworker, and played it... and after awhile I didn't even notice there was music playing. Pretty goddamn boring, but Eliot Smith loves 'em... of course, he's pretty boring as well.

Andy, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

first mercury rev, then flaming lips, then grandaddy and delgadoes
Of these four, I'd say Grandaddy fits the mold the least. But there's more truth in what you say than I'd like to admit since I like all the aforementioned.
and now i suppose it is mercury rev's turn once more.
Sadly, All Is Dream is Deserter's Songs Part 2 . . . but its still a pretty good album.

bnw, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ack, sorry.

bnw, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i wish i liked them but there're weezer with a moog.

tom, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nice but not even close to necessary.

Lindsey B, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hrrmmm, was just thinking about this, due to my post on the "imitators or originators" thread.

I really was completely bored by them when I first heard them. I think it might have been the beards. Then I fell in love with a band (Black Nielson) who inhabit a very similar sort of genre (spacecountry) but did it with a very pastoral English bent. Everybody told me "But how can you like them, they're just Grandaddy rip-offs" which made me go back and listen to Grandaddy, and you know they've actually grown on me.

I really think it was a case of... I'm glad that I didn't listen to them when everyone was telling me to, cause they never would have lived up to any hype, but having discovered them on my own, and having come to them on my own terms, they're a nice little treasure.

Kate the Saint, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
It's really no surprise that Bowie loves these guys so much -
_The Sophtware Slump_ sounds basically like a cross between
Flaming Lips and the quieter sections of _Diamond Dogs_.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The Sophftware slump sounded magnificent when I was staying in the Adirondak mountains! it sounds just downright dull in the city. Its a very well done effort but of a different space for most use

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Sophtware OK, Sumday pretty boring except for a couple songs.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

i like this song i'm listening to, first song i've heard by them

He's simple, He's dumb, He's the pilot?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

i think there's real sincerity to this band that adds measurably to the charm and listenability of the songs and records. i like it how there's frequently a very poised sense of humour and light-heartedness at the core of even the most melancholy tracks.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

The song from the first album that they use as the theme to Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe plays over and over in my head.

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

They were ahead of the curve on the beards front.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

"He's simple, He's dumb, He's the pilot?"
A highlight in their output, Sur.

willem, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

yea it was one of those who the fuck is this moments

Surmounter, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

listened to sumday last week and it was awesome

cutty, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

I like them too, can't really understand the hate. Maybe the proggy elements, or the slight air of twee?

Neil S, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

Someone emailed via my site regarding albums missing from my list. Regarding Under The Western Freeway, they said, "Better than any Radiohead album except Kid A (their masterpiece)."

Odd thing is I'm sure I heard it, and it made zero impression on me. Could I have been that wrong? I guess I can gamble $9 on it for a used copy after work today.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 6 June 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

I really love grandaddy but I think that is an overstatement

akm, Friday, 6 June 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

the last album is dope

Just got offed, Friday, 6 June 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ this band

stephen, Saturday, 7 June 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

Under The Western Freeway is pleasant - in places - but it's really insane to imagine it being the best anything, even the best Grandaddy record. It's been a while but I feel like it has a lot of in-betweeny type songs, with only three or four tracks really coming into focus at all. Search "AM 180," "Go Progress Chrome," and uh...that could kind of really do it for me. "Nonphenomenal Lineage" is nice I guess.

"Summer Here Kids" was I guess a big deal of some kind in some circles, but I never really warmed up to it. I think it would sound like a real time capsule at this point but I could be wrong.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 8 June 2008 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

It's been a few years since I listened to Grandaddy. I remember really loving "Summer Here Kids".

Z S, Sunday, 8 June 2008 05:37 (seventeen years ago)

In-betweeny songs? No way. The title track is something of an interlude but it's still pretty. "Poisoned at Hartsy Thai Food" is the only dud and overall I'd say it's almost, almost the equal of The Sophtware Slump. I prefer "Everything beautiful is Far Away" to the thematically similar "Miner at the Dial-a-View", and "Summer Here Kids" is perhaps the best rock song they did, better than Chartsngrafs, maybe pipped by "Now it's On" off "Sumday".

ledge, Sunday, 8 June 2008 08:08 (seventeen years ago)

sumday is my favourite from them

Charlie Howard, Sunday, 8 June 2008 08:10 (seventeen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

am 180 crystal lake and nature anthem are good but most of the rest is just too depressing and fill in noises!

xzanfar, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 15:11 (four years ago)

i just listened to the first 3 releases and if i had to continue with anymore i would want to shoot myself!

xzanfar, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 16:50 (four years ago)

can't argue with depressing and noises, but these are some of the qualities i enjoy. you might want to give Sumday a shot, as there's an uptick in energy. also perfectly fine to not enjoy grandaddy.

accordion folder full of Zoobooks (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 17:25 (four years ago)

sumday is what sealed my decision but i would like to see a greatest hits to include what i like but i would not buy the whole release for just one song or the singles as they cost too much!

xzanfar, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 17:46 (four years ago)

keep ur freak flag aloft xzanfar but Sumday is a masterpiece of depressing noises
