William Shakespeare, what hast thou on thy Walkeman?

The Bard likes words. He's into Italian culture in a big way. He's not averse to violence, but likes to mix it up with romance, whimsy and low comedy. He's a bisexual in the service of the royal family, a pusher of the creative envelope but bit of a social conservative when it comes to women and jews...

Does he like rap, of which Brian Eno recently said 'Who (apart from me) would have predicted that men shouting poetry would become the most successful form of pop?' Or does The Bard have Fairport Convention and Richard Thompson's 'Mock Tudor' on the 8 track of his half-timbered Morris Traveller?

Possibly Eminem, so long as he's not too fussy about the Italian culture/romance/bisexuality/royalty bit. So maybe not Eminem then.

William Shakespeare would like Shakespeare's Sister.

Jagannatha, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i believe he would listen to slick rick.

ethan, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Prince, obviously. Although Prince's lyrics are generally pretty bad, but from Momus' description of the Bard they seem to have a few things in common.

Like a pseudo-mafia, Tarantino-sampling, "Is this some Kharmic-Chi love thing happening here baby or what?", especially good-looking, semi-comedy band, yo?

Badebing badeboom, The Fun Loving Criminals.

I think he would listen to Bob Dylan but secretly long for Tone Loc

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually the egotistical chap would probably listen to Krenneth Branagh reading Hamlet.

nathalie, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Iron Maiden!

the Bard would love rap-- no doubt. Above all Shakes was a man of density, and there is no music that currently exists with the level of density that rap provides. Rap lives and dies on double-entendre, hidden meanings, inside jokes, and wordplay-- all wrapped up in a high/low dichotomy that Shakity Shakes brought to the game.

However rap is still waiting for its Shakespeare, someone who can marry the high and low promise of the genre together as the Bard did with popular theatre.

I think he would love chamber pop. You know cute boys singing overly clever songs about love and sex. So you momus,Rufus,Stephen Merrit .

As well Alice Randall was a hugely popular Country soungwriter. She said it was the music that reminded her of the Cavaliers and was the only music that spoke in narratives anymore. I think shakepeare might listen to Wilco, Smog and the Silver Jews.

anthony, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The soundtrack to Hedwig and the Angry Inch! And maybe Rent, too.

turner, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, Japan being the Italy of today, WS (shakespeare, not the fresh prince) would have a cleverist appreciation of J-Pop, plus a stack of mini-discs burnt from his op-shop singles collection. oh, and a kind-of weird over-enthusiasm for Eminem, in fact, he'd probably augment his nihophilia by only buying Japanese releases of Eminem records.

Oukast, the bard would feel for Mrs Jackson. Public Enemy's Black Steel in The Hour Of Chaos would strike a chord as well. Possibly Eels as well.

He sounds like an Only Built 4 Cuban Linx kind of guy.
