New Elephant Man album

...So it says 'ere, coming out in September on VP (all of EM's previous albums have been on Greensleeves). Could Good 2 Go be the record which blows the guy up into Sean Paul-like ubiquity? He's doing lots of guest vocals at the moment eg. w/ Mariah Carey, and "Pon Di River Pon Di Banks" (first single) is hella anthemic.

I can't wait - I only just got Higher Level and am astonished by how good it is (I thought Dutty Rock was great, but this...) and the other tracks from the new album floating around ("Fuck U Sign", "All Out") are fabulous.

At the moment I'm planning to cheat by putting Higher Level in my top ten of '03 list, but I'd love it if Good 2 Go matches it or knocks it off.

What I'm finding interesting about Elephant Man is how over the last three years he's been moving away from gangsta idioms and towards a more generally nutty, hyper-not-aggressive showman. He's a bit like Mystikal in that sense, and as with Mystikal his good stuff makes me feel oddly warm and affectionate towards him. His voice just keeps getting more expressive and unpredictable (in an undoubtedly good way).

see also Busta Rhymes, though he was never really gangsta ever, was he? and he evolved from collegiate LOTN guy to millennial fright guy. so I'm completely ass-backwards on this. nevermind.

back on topic, I'm very interested to hear this album; I like Higher Level and "Fuck U Sign" might be my single of the year.

shit i just spent nearly 3 hours downloading dancehall! Higher Level is awesome.

ha ha keith, and i just sent you some...

― gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Has any one heard "Chiny Ting"?

― cybele (cybele), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoops. I also forgot "Log On." Horribly and violently homophobic, but so bloody catchy that I've made up my own lyrics so that I can listen to the tune in peace.

I recon he's too scary for mainstream success, a couple of guest hits maybe, like bounty killer, but i don't think he'll do what sean pauls done, sean paul has such a baby face and a very melodic vocal style.

Plus what's with the freaky new pigtails and all the weight Elephant Man's put on?

― Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 3 August 2003 08:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Does he look like a real elephant now?

― s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Dumbo a real elephant?

― Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 4 August 2003 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, dumbo is a real elephant, or at least he is if you believe in the magic feather!
More importantly, what's going on with Elephant's 'Approach' track, he borrows heavily from ... (wait for it) .... Sting's 'Englishman in New York'. Fascinating for it's perverse presense, and I'm interested to see where he'll take this

― nick.K (nick.K), Monday, 4 August 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

shinehead did a take on that sting song a few years back too.

― gaz (gaz), Monday, 4 August 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I love "Approach"! See my most recent blog entry.

But surely "Tall Up Tall Up" is much more bizarre.

we've been listening to a ton of Elephant Man in the van, I think I might buy this when I get back from the tour...

chiney ting is one of the most ridiculous records i have ver heard!

― Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

it's all about japanese girls travelling to jamaica for a massive portion of caribbean cock, basically, (i believe the word anaconda is used often) and as such not great, but for some reason it makes me damn near collapse laughing...

― Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

as does "bad man a bad man", particularly as it's voiced top the tune of r kelly's "the greatest"... it's just makes me giggle

― Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"Tall Up Tall Up" is bonkers. Isn't that mock opera style cribbed from Buccaneer tho'?

― Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

think it is, definitely... he seems to be making a bit of a comeback lately tho'

― Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

he is my favorite current artiste

― strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

ele or buccaneer?

― Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

elephant. sometimes i wonder how many of my favorite artists have completely reprehensible views. sadly i suspect its quite a few.

― strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

most people are reprehensible in some way or another, so it doesn't bother me... if you only listened to records by nice people yr life wld be shite jess..

― Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but my life is already shite!

― strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

join the club - violent dancehall = the only answer!

― Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

or perhaps records by cecile (she's my fave artiste right now and a bit nicer than ele)

― Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Saying Tall Up Tall Up is bonkers is understating it some. But I must confess I've not listened to much mock-opera dancehall.

― nick.K (nick.K), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Just the other day I met a Japanese girl who was in town for a few days...we got to talking about dancehall (she almost passed out when I said I'd heard of Mighty Crown) and she insisted that I take her out to hear some tunes. I brought her to a friend's night (all hard dancehall, all night long) and she lost it when "Chiney Ting" came on. All these Jamaican guys started yelling "Go Japanese girl!" Her excitement was infectious...I had a hard time stifling MY giggles.

― dan (dan), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

When i first heard "Chiney Ting" i thought the lyrics were 'ME DON'T WAN no eeny weeny teeny chiney ting' and was like what the fuck!!! He did "Log On"!! A dance that pretended to stomp on imaginary chi chi men!! And now he doesn't want a man with a small dick!! Then I listened again and was kinda dissapointed.
