Holly Golightly C/D

My first exposure to HG was through her excellent collection "Singles Round Up", which had 24 cuts and still wasn't anywhere near comprehensive. It's still in heavy rotation a couple of years later, as is "Serial Girlfriend", "God Don't Like It", etc. Also love her collaboration with Dan Melchior, "Desperate Little Town". Classic!

ham on rye (ham on rye), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Also like her work with Thee Headcoatees and those songs she did with the Greenhornes...

ham on rye (ham on rye), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

classic--there's no debate whatsoever. i hate to say it, but few women can play real rock 'n' roll and pull it off so perfectly. holly is flawless.

it's too bad that most of the attention she's getting right now comes from that damn song with the white stipes. holly & billy are miles above them.

call mr. lee (call mr. lee), Friday, 1 August 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Stripes song but her solo stuff is good too!

dave q, Friday, 1 August 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

She quite merrily rules, she does. Got a couple of the CDs lying around...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I preferred "In cold Blood"

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like the White Stripes, but I'll agree that Holly Golightly could outschool 'em without breaking a sweat.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Friday, 1 August 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't go wrong with any of her records, _Main Attraction_ & _Serial Girlfriend_ get a lot of play here. I'd imagine the singles collection is great (I have the singles already, so didn't bother with the LP).

Wandering Boy Poet, Saturday, 2 August 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I must confess I don't really get the unbridled enthusiasm. I dig her guest apperances on RFTC songs and her Singles Round-Up album was okay, but it seems kinda generic. I sure don't think she's BAD, but I'm curious what's so great about her.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 2 August 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

and isn't she responsible for the line:
i love you with all of my heart
and hate you with all of my mind

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Saturday, 2 August 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The unbridled enthusiasm is well-deserved. Back to the Limp Bizkit threads with ye.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Saturday, 2 August 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

What Ham on Rye said to a large extent (to be fair, I don't think she's a saviour of anything per se but she IS someone who takes a 'generic' form and puts a hell of an individual stamp on it...as opposed to what'sisname the Interscope VP. ;-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 2 August 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ilm in sexism shocker!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 2 August 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

err, me in generalising about ilm shocker. but really, why was i the only person to pull mr lee up on this??!!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 3 August 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

no - although the general black t-shirt sausage party air of the thread certainly helped let it not stand out so much

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Sunday, 3 August 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe the ILx malaise some of us are feeling, e.g. "Oh Christ, I give up"

are you speaking for you or me there?

Because being an uber-P.C. reactionary is retarded?

David Allen, Sunday, 3 August 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Sunday, 3 August 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be me, JB, and thanks to David Allen for proving my point, as usual

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 3 August 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

don't you get bitter now ya big silly goose!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Sunday, 3 August 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Sunday, 3 August 2003 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand the Bill O'Reilly reference; I've only seen his show a few times, in which I was just incredibly annoyed by his stupidity. However, the super easily offended P.C. that floats around these boards makes my head hurt.

David Allen, Sunday, 3 August 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

give me an example of this pls?

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

on 2nd thoughts don't bother 'cause i probably won't be here anyway & plus i don't care much what people like you think about anything

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah i forgot, holly golightly, yeah she's pretty good

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

anything we can do to make your head hurt, David, we're happy to oblige

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i hardly think taking objection to few women can play real rock 'n' roll is retarded uber-PC reactionary.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"God, what are you uber-PC reactionaries thinking?! All I said was that women are only good for washing my socks and sucking my dick. Jeez!"

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(and obv that's not what DA said but COME ON how retarded do you have to be not to find the level of offensiveness in what he did?)

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

watch and see

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

would you all just SHUT UP and start talking about the overrated nostalgia queen again? PLEASE!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony - I can probably get some 'rude' pics of her if I ask around. Strictly if you're interested, of course.

dave q, Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

forgive me, that should be retro not nostalgia.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

'cause "nostalgia" rock is stuff like good charlotte & such, eh

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 3 August 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

just 'cause stuff is based on normal rocknroll chord progr'ns & isn't recorded all fancy doesn't make it fucking "retro", that shit is timeless! if you do it right

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 3 August 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"i don't care much what people like you think about anything"

I think it's funny that someone can say something as openly bigoteted as that and not receive the same reaction I did. It was beyond obvious that saying "women can't rock" was stupid and sexist. But giving a knee-jerk reaction and screaming FOR SHAME would be worse, not only because it's obvious, but because it gives him what he wants.

You all seem quick to jump on the hate bandwagon, however. One post of mildly differing opinion (which, again, holy shit it wasn't), and all of a sudden I'm an O'Reilly worshiping, women hating, neo-nazi who's just on internet break between pulling a black man behind my pick up and tying a homosexual to a fence post in the middle of the desert.

give me an example of this pls?
-- unknown or illegal user (doora...), August 3rd, 2003

Every response I received.

David Allen, Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It's flabbergasting that people think mentioning Limp Bizkit or Good Charlotte when disagreeing with me will have some sort of humbling effect on me. Reminding me you can't find the value in those groups will NOT make me less confident in my opinion of the artist at hand. Recognize this!

I must confess I find a group guys debating whether one of them is sexist or not even more irritating.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

To get back on subject, Golighty's background vocals on RFTC songs like "Eye On You" and "Turkish Delight" are great. While Singles Round-Up didn't particularly knock me out, I'd be curious to hear more of her work.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only heard the new one, and I like it. It doesn't make me super-excited to hear the rest of her catalogue, but I imagine I'd like it if I did/do. And I imagine I'll like the new one the more I hear it, so I can see the rest of her stuff having that effect as well.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"uber-P.C. reactionary", "retarded" , etc etc etc etc! "hate bandwagon" etc etc etc! striking some real blows for free speech there kid.

yeah anthony i wasn't trying to "humble" you, i just find mentioning good charlotte sort of funny. or i did up until then, i don't any more, i won't do it again. & i just mean, how're they more "modern" or whatever retro isn't than, etc etc etc...you know

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

also i don't wanna debate whether david is sexist, he just obviously is so i wanted to insult him. sorry to waste people's valuable time

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

oops left a bit out, "wanted to insult him so that girls would like me"

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - 'I parrot bill o'reilly and all of a sudden people start comparing me to bill o'reilly - no fair!'

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

But giving a knee-jerk reaction and screaming FOR SHAME would be worse, not only because it's obvious, but because it gives him what he wants.

no, i think NOT calling attention to it gives him what he wants, that is effectual CONDONING of his hateful beliefs. no shit its obvious, but the obvious is often TOO easy to overlook. maybe he was looking for a rise outta someone like me, what am i supposed to do, be a good girl and back down? yeah right! frankly, i'd much rather be an "uber PC reactionary retard" than a pussy.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 4 August 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Final response time!!!

haha - 'I parrot bill o'reilly and all of a sudden people start comparing me to bill o'reilly - no fair!'

Repeating yourself does not make your defense stronger.

The Lady Ms Lurex -- I see your point.

unknown or illegal user

Of course you can judge that I'm sexist, from one vague, small post I made. You just gotta read between the lines. I'm also assuming that you're an 8 foot tall hispanic man with hooks for hands, because I could so easily draw that from what you've said.

Sorry to ruin the thread.

David Allen, Monday, 4 August 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

David Allen in total fucking disingenuousness compounded by the seeming idea that no one notices patterns across multiple posts and threads shockah!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 4 August 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Saying shockah and not being funny, shockah!

David Allen, Monday, 4 August 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

being sexist and whining about being called on it - shockah!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

repeating myself cuz it never stops being true - prove me wrong o'reilly

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, I really don't want this to continue on this thread any more, because I know it's annoying people.

Do you have AIM or some other way we can debate this further?

David Allen, Monday, 4 August 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

have at it

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, e-mail it is then!

PS God that was obnoxious.

David Allen, Monday, 4 August 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

who was trying to be funny?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I like her, but I had one bad experience seeing her live which I probably shouldn't scare me off from the records. She seemed a bit out of sorts and angry with her band.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 4 August 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

saw her tonight, doing her twangy thing. her voice works really well with that stuff. lots of fun.

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 8 November 2008 07:39 (sixteen years ago)

ugh this thread.

yeah I don't normally listen to this type of music i guess but i do love her so - there's just something about her whole approach that just *works*. Really dig the Brokeoffs too.

Disco/Very (Roz), Saturday, 8 November 2008 08:57 (sixteen years ago)

chiming in to say yup, she rocks.

fantasimundo, Saturday, 8 November 2008 10:53 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

s/d - whats her best album?

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

Yeesh. what a weird thread.

As for her best record, it depends what you're looking for. There's a good comp called "My First Holly Go Lightly Record" that is designed for people like you who are wondering where to start.

I think Painted On is really great, it's a real minimal heartbroken kinda pissed off ballady thing with Dan Melchior but not as depressing as I'm making it sound.

Brio, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

I agree wholehearedly with this:

just 'cause stuff is based on normal rocknroll chord progr'ns & isn't recorded all fancy doesn't make it fucking "retro", that shit is timeless! if you do it right
