Apparently Simon is available for comedy gig bookings.

he is very much like Toby Amies if anyone remembers him from Alternative Nation on MTV

stevem (blueski), Friday, 1 August 2003 10:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

they are the funniest pair on tv - loved it when he came out to beenie man and asked him for a hug and when he shut marilyn manson up by telling him he had lipstick all over his teeth... total geezer! miquita is just totoal mischief and makes me laugh a lot

Popworld is the best pop show on terrestrial TV, although I have a soft spot for TOTP Saturday, which isn't regularly presented by sub-Broom Cupboard lamers. Simon and Miquita are totally cool. I've even managed to successfully wake up to them this week. Right now, they could only be bettered by Alan Partridge fronting CD: UK or TOTP.

"Straight in at no. 20, Komme sie bitte und listen to Kraftwerk!" (sorry)

Good to see Simon and Miquita getting love from the ILX massive. I think I may have a crush on Miquita.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like Miquita (her interview with Beyoncé the other day was superb) but that Simon is a buffoon.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm sorry too, stevem.

"Radio Norwich meets ITV1 in a soundclash of epic proportions! This week, the infamous ODB joins Alan on the wild ride of his pop Chat Chatanooga while Alan's ELO revival continues apace and Lynn tries to negotiate an appearance by Slipknot".

Yeah, I want this.

Miquita is the most beautiful person on TV

i have had a crush on miquita for ages - go on nathan say it, it's ok you're among friends!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

okay, dammit I HAVE a crush on Miquita.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

I didn't know she was also presenter on 1Xtra. One more on a long list of reasons why it should replace it's parent station.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think JtN underrates Simon, unless he meant "buffoon" in a good way, which I don't think he did.

Miquita's interview of 50 Cent was also completely masterful, she was simultaneously flirting with him and laughing in his face.

Cripes when I mentioned them yesterday I thought people would be saying "who?" I don't know why I thought that, it was clearly mentalism.

one year passes...
Simon Amstell resembles a Father Christmas underling more and more, day by day

fourteen years pass...

Anyone seen Benjamin? Went to see that on a whim, not having kept up with Amstell since Grandmother's House, and it was a really lovely experience - clever, sad and, what stuck out to me the most, it really manages to make 2019 London look as pretty as it can be without forcibly choosing the most photogenic locations. It also felt more than a little Woody Allen - romantic comedy centred around a neurotic protagonist. I guess that space is vacant now.

Decided to check out a stand-up special of his on Netflix and it felt like it was covering a lot of the same ground but with less charm.

Where is Miquita Oliver these days though?

Angry Question Time Man's Flute Club Band (Tom D.), Sunday, 7 April 2019 12:24 (five years ago) link

She filed for bankruptcy after managing to get sacked from both TV and radio.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 7 April 2019 12:28 (five years ago) link

If I remember correctly, she was fired from T4 after insulting a pop star behind their back (can't remember who) and she was fired from the BBC for slagging off Fearne Cotton?

Also I've just realized that this Andi Oliver woman I keep seeing on TV, though I never knew her name till now, is not only her mother but used to be in Rip Rig & Panic.

Yeah, with Neneh Cherry!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 7 April 2019 12:31 (five years ago) link

Wow, never knew about her being in Rip, Rig & Panic.

She also owned Stoke Newington venue Andee's, and hung around there a lot (it's now moved).

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 7 April 2019 12:36 (five years ago) link

(venue the wrong word - it was/is a restaurant)

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 7 April 2019 12:36 (five years ago) link

Her brother was the bass player, I kind of recognized her tbh.

This has got me looking into the fate of various '00s presenters. Alexa Chung fucked off to the US, Alex Zane has been reduced to presenting "funny videos that are on Youtube" compilation shows.

‘reduced’ or ‘found the natural level for his talent’

A couple (OK, probably about 5) NYEs ago I saw her crying her eyes out in a Hackney pub.

Amstell on the other hand I watched doing a pretty good stand up set at the end of last year.

She was on that thing where C List celebs drove from Thailand to Vietnam with Martin Kemp/Shirlie Holliman, Noel Edmonds and his wife and One of Rizzle Kicks and someone else.

She cried a lot on that too.

Excellent use of the licence fee by the BBC there.

i'm fine with my licence fee being used to send edmonds to the far east if it's a one-way trip

The weirdest post T4 career realignment is probably June Sarpong, now a political lobbyist who works with Peter Mandelson.
