rotten vocals tip it

gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Rat Scabies tho!

dave q, Friday, 1 August 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone guess which way I'm going to vote?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"New Rose" still sounds vibrant and fresh to me. "Anarchy in the Uk,"....well.....doesn't.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i want to only listen to them in the past! *stamps foot*

gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Go on then Gaz, which way do you think I'm going to vote?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

er....new rose? ^crosses fingers^

gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

D'OH!

How did you guess that Gaz?

I reckon you must have cheated!

Alright then, best of three: you have another go and see if you can get it right a second time.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

you're trying to trick me!

gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Would I?

Honestly, I'm hurt that you could even suggest such a thing.

Go on, have another go!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

*starts crying*
no stewart, please, make them look away

gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"Anarchy In The UK," no contest. But then again I've been up for almost 24 hours and am out of my mind and surrounded by dumb fuckin' college students in a computer lab and frankly I WANNA DESTROY PASSERBY.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaz, DO IT!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And stop being such a baby.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I listened to Damned Damned Damned the other day and while I guess it's fun and all, it really struck me as kind of anonymous, kind of generic and ordinary, enjoyable but not something that would scream CLASSIC if you didn't already know the History Of Punk or something. And I prefer Neat Neat Neat to New Rose easy. Don't they have the same exact riff or something? The chorus of Neat Neat Neat is, suh-prise, neater.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

If it sounds generic that's probably because it's largely responsible for having defined the genre!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

zing!

gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll make Anthony cry!

The Damned were the first punk band I got into, so for sentimental and other reasons, them. And at least they never pretended the ongoing cycle of breakups and reunions was anything by that (no Rat Scabies in the current line-up, though, it just seems wrong).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It was all those years without Cappers that seemed wrong to me!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

See, I got into the band during the late eighties lull so when I saw them he was back and in full effect -- and very nude, I recall from the great show they did at the LA Palladium in 1991. Actually I think I was pretty damn lucky, that was my one and only chance to see the Captain, Rat and Dave on the same stage and I got it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Great question.

I'm reminded of seeing Captain Sensible being interviewed on a 'history of punk' documentary awhile back, talking about the first time he heard Anarchy In The UK. All the members of the Damned were gathered round the record player eager to hear what the competition would sound like. He described it as (approximately) 'second rate Bad Company with Old Man Steptoe shouting over the top'.

Which on a purely aural level isn't that far from the truth. I'd way prefer to listen to New Rose these days. But New Rose is "simply" a fantastic record; Anarchy in the UK is (adopts sinister tone) an indictment. However, God save The Queen is a much better record, so I say New Rose.

This coming from someone who ZEALOUSLY CHAMPIONS Good Charlotte.

Sorry, Antoine, you know I love ya, but I can't let you dishonor the Damned like that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't know why you apologize every time you bring up that I like Good Charlotte (who have way better riffs, lyrics, vocals, production, um, EVERYTHING ASIDE FROM QUOTE-UNQUOTE CREDIBILITY than the Damned - though arguably Captain Sensible is more charming in interviews). If I took offense, I would have mentioned it several months ago.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Good Charlotte has 'better production'? There must be somebody on ECM who's EVEN BETTER!

dave q, Friday, 1 August 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! Dave Q I put it to you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Good Charlotte... have way better riffs, lyrics, vocals, production, um, EVERYTHING ASIDE FROM QUOTE-UNQUOTE CREDIBILITY than the Damned

Sorry, but for that comment, I must respectfully reply with....

DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE, ANTHONY, DIE!!!!!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

'neat neat neat'...no wait, 'did you no wrong'

duane (doorag), Saturday, 2 August 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Justyn D in total agreement with Anthony M shockah! (apart from the Good Charlotte bit) "New Rose" is a pretty good noisy pop song with fantastic drumming, but "Anarchy" is one of the greatest records ever made. No contest.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 2 August 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

duane is so right.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 2 August 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

always!

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Saturday, 2 August 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Damned proved that dumb energy beats credibility every time.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 2 August 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

what's 'dumb' about 'NR'?

dave q, Saturday, 2 August 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a compliment, Dave. You need to be really smart to bring off dumb energy. Also - how tight were The Damned? Unbelievably tight.
