Non Rock Music Immersion Challenge

I have found that despite greatly enjoying the "non rock" music that I have, my music collection has way too few records of this sort. I'm going to attempt, for the next three weeks, to only purchase music that is NOT rock. You, ILX, should suggest some places to begin my total immersion therapy. I'll be attempting to consume at least a record a day.

I like:

Soulwax mixes
DJ Shadow
Whatever crap the DFA feeds me
Aphex Twin

I want to avoid new wave / rock bands with synths too.

Dude, geteth yonself to some Amon Tobin pronto; a very creative and fluid and diverse-styled sample-music freak, gets as spooky and dirty as DJ Shadow and as wild and mechanical as Aphex Twin, but there's also lotsa extremely organic stuff in there, live (or at least live sounding) drums, saxaphones, etc. Listen to "Get Yr Snack On" or "Deus" and I bet you'll have bought Supermodified before the sun sets!

i have been really into folk and indigienous music for the past year or so. i'd definitely recommend those "Secret museum of mankind" compilations on yazoo. they are really varied and have tons of crazy sounds on them. likewise, the "Music!" box set on wergo will give you a lot of places to further explore the sounds of the rest of the world (if you're interested).

Ned, I was going to suggest gamelan music, before I saw your post. It must be in the air lately, because I've been thinking a lot about how much I'd like to finally start buying some gamelan music. I don't think it's exactly what JW is looking for, but he could still like it. (I would suggest going with Balinese gamelan as an introduction though.)

I think the two CD set of Tri Repetae with the two EPs is by far one of my favorite electronic music collections. If you like Aphex and are curious about Autechre, I think it is the best place to start as it is a mid point between their early melodic, stripped down sound and the later work which is more digitally crunchy and abstract.

Ha, I feel proud of myself when I listen to rock music, as it happens so rarely these days. I would suggest John Zorn's group Masada for one, I've been on a kick lately. Especially Live at Sevilla 2001 or Live at Tonic. It's a really accessible mix of Jewish folk influenced melodies and jazz and bad-ass grooves.

On the electronic music tip, I'm still enjoying Astrobotnia a lot. I think I have vol. 2, it's really grown on me.

Also, I can never recommend Telefon Tel Aviv enough, it's the perfect mix of hot beats and gorgeous melodies.

Er, have you heard them? It's not jam-bandy or whatever at all. They're all fantastic musicians...Dave Douglas is a star now, Greg Cohen played for Tom Waits, Joey Baron's played for everyone (inc. Bowie). I don't think they could come from a more 'authentic' place for the music.

Dude, everything is too mellow because you seem to be specifically seeking out mellow/boring records. Try Back for the First Time by Ludacris. There's not a single mellow moment on the record. It's just great and amazing all the way through. And it seems like you need this sort of blast pretty sorely after all Avalanches/DJ Shadow malarky. (And it's better than Atari Teenage Riot.)

It is all good stuff, a lot of it's just painted in very similar shades. You can easily burn out on it if you're not mixing it up with more visceral or rocking or whatever-you-wanna-call-it stuff ...

Cornelius! Fantasma is classic beyond measure. It has rock leanings but his electronic mastery is staggering.

Rest Proof Clockwork is easily my favorite Plaid alb -- its cheer and playfulness is infectious, and usually overshadows its occasional deep melancholy. Also get Plaid's Peel Sessions, b/c Scoobs = best song ever. I am severely loving Parts in the Post, though. The Coba remix!

Don't 4get wimmin in electronic music! eg:
Neotropic - Mr. Brubaker's Strawberry Alarm Clock (I might've gotten the title wrong)
Andrea Parker - DJ Kicks (some great electro mixes)
Mira Calix - Prickle EP or Skimskitta (former is lush, melds ambient and IDM-proper in a rare way)

And finally autechre. I always suggest starting from Incunabula and progress chronologically, since one could fairly say that they get harder to listen to w/ each alb. Their EPs are almost all pure gold though, Garbage being stunning. The Anti EP gets underrepresented by everyone -- it's the most Orbital-ish of their EPs (though in some ways predates certain aspects of the Orbital sound). THeir PEel Sessions = gold too; "Milk DX" = ae with scratching! I'm getting a lot into Envane lately. Cichli Suite is brill. DON'T get Basscad EP. Also, get Gescom's (Autechre's umbrella project, sometimes they actually are Gescom, usu. not) Keynell EP.
