the future sound of mash-ups

anyone have recommendations for follow-up purchases to the 2 Many DJs classic Vol.2 mix?
anything goes, though especially looking for legit/sanctioned (hence likely easy-to-find, though probably lonely) releases.

there were lots of related threads back in the day (especially Soulwax vs Avalanches), but where's it all going lately?

i've still not heard the DJ Yoda mixes (2 volumes now) but maybe give them a go?

lost track of how many 2 Many DJs CDs there are now - 6 or even 7??

there are some DJ mixes on Princess Superstar's website i think, done by her and Alexander Technique, one i heard was pretty good

i'll be playing a 2MDJs style set this Thursday night in London - the results will be online for downloadin' the very next day probably

click over to Freelance Hellraiser's site and request a mix CD from him too - you can also download it elsewhere i think, the '45 Special' one - several months old now but still fecking ace

and Osymyso has two fairly new mixes on his site too - the 'Glass' and 'Wood' mixes - not heard these yet tho

there's very little in the way of legit mix CDs cos they're harder to clear due to density and volume of tracks used i guess. this puts people off. however it seems a lot of artists have jumped on the bandwagon and are releasing their own 'party mix' CDs, think Playgroup, Adamski...and DJ Shadow has a new one out too - good luck finding em tho!

is that DJ Shadow Diminishing Returns thing on CD or just vinyl, btw?

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 1 August 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

slightly different, but well worth investigating is dj rupture
he has two mixes released, one of which, gold teeth thief, you can download from his site, www.negrophonic.com
more hip-hop/r'n'b/d'n'b/dancehall/gabber that the more spangly, fresh sounding electro and what not of 2 many djs,but don't let that put you off,its excellent...

Matos, I think I saw that Diminishing Returns CD at Easy Street in Queen Anne, but I'm not positive. Prob'ly your best bet in any case.

Yes, Stevem is ON THE MONEY. I saw Princess Superstar and Alexander Technique (as "DJs are not Rockstars") live about a month ago and bought the tour cd with all their mashups. I'll try to give you the track listing off the top of my head...

1. khia and jj fad over "la rock 01"
2. "like a virgin" over "hypnotize"
3. "planet rock" over jacques lu cont's "silver screen..."
4. "push it" over "la la land"
5. "fascinated" (company b) over "react" AND "nothin"
5. "relax" (frankie) over jacques lu cont's "Danger! High Voltage"

okay i can't remember any more but it's also got phil collins "something in the air tonight" over "grindin" and "work it" over b.r.m.c.

i can't really do justice to how good the mix is (i'll bet it sounds atrocious to lots of people) but i think the key is that instead of mashup they do a good job of matching the emotional register of tracks.

for example, over jlc's high drama remix of felix and miss kitten you can really hear the cocaine hysteria of the era, every shout sounds desperate and ILL like a "white lines" in the making.

If one was to shell out a ludicrous amount of money on just one of 2 Many DJs' gazillion illegal mixes, which release would be the absolute must-get?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 4 August 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, but a vinyl cutting of their 'remix' of Alex Gopher's 'Party People' would rock.

Actually, I quite liked 'As Heard On...' pts. 1, 3 and 5.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

volume two, tim. it's really the only one that matters.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer the first and third, actually

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've already got vol. 2. So 1 and 3 are the top picks of the illegals?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

where to get the illegals?
