Sheryl Crow. She's always been up front about her aspirations to be a mediocre singer/songwriter (who happens upon brief moments of greatness now and again).

Liz Phair. She's never been a great singer or songwriter, so she tried to distract thousands of indie kids by acting tough and adopting the most horrible nickname ever, "Blowjob Queen."

Sheryl Crow wins.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 3 August 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

thats so absurd, imo, liz never realy wanted to have all that much to do w/ indie kids, plz. and she sang a song about a flower which mentioned being a blowjob queen, it's not like she woke up one day and said "i'm gonna have a new nickname!"

shryl crow should go back to being michaekl jackson's back-p singer or just please shrivel up and soak up the sun and get skin cancer or leprosy and die already, whatever is easier. that's all i have to say about her, aside fromthe fact that her make-up sucks shit

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 3 August 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Soak up the Sun one of the catchiest songs ever? I think so...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Sunday, 3 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm seriously torn. "If It Makes You Happy" is one of my favorite songs ever. So is "Fuck and Run." I don't know which way to turn.

"thats so absurd, imo, liz never realy wanted to have all that much to do w/ indie kids, plz."

Yeah, maybe I knew that and you knew that, but I find it awfully convenient for her to come out and say it now that she's trying to push her latest platter of crap on a larger audience.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Casting aside dumb distractions such as hype and career goals, I'll go with Liz Phair since her first two are excellent IMHO. I also like Crow more than most, but I don't find her to be as interesting as Phair.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on music alone, I'd still pick Sheryl Crow. Why? Phair's never had a song approaching the quality of "My Favorite Mistake," "Everyday is a Winding Road," or "Strong Enough," and likely never will.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to agree Andrew. While I absoutely adore Exile for its sentiments and the way they're posed (I like to act a foot taller than I am too), Crow has an uncanny knack for writing great pop songs without coming off as facile or pandering, and that is real artistry. Many have been able to cop attitudes and win indie favor, trumpeting their outsider status. Remaining true while delivering something a wide-cross-section can relate to is a far trickier task, and accounts for much of the genius attributed to the Beatles.

I can't for the life of me understand why Liz Phair thinks she'll break into the big leagues. Why not just do modelling/acting work (which she gets plenty of)? It's easier and pays better.

hstencil, Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Surprised at the pro-Sheryl sentiment here, which I generally agree with. Sheryl's not a great artist, nor does she aim to be perceived as one, but her knack of writing seemingly throwaway tunes which ingrain themselves in your skull after one listen on a crackly radio... that's a rare knack. Her first two albums were surprisingly consistent, too, and despite her lyrics being generally mediocre she's written some fine lines. And who doesn't love a girl who likes a good beer buzz early in the morning? There'll always be a place for Sheryl Crow in this world, and I'm glad of that.

Liz, on the other hand... she's written songs which are the equal of anything of Sheryl's. If they lose out in terms of catchiness, they certainly win in terms of insight/humour/intelligence (not that Sheryl's completely devoid of those things, but y'know, they'll never be her selling points). I've actually only heard Exile, and have no desire to listen to anything post-Whipsmart. Hmm. This is tough... I say Sheryl edges it, just.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was terrible seeing Sheryl perform "Soak Up The Sun" on the Tonight Show with Liz Phair tagging along singing back-up vocals in a key that's yet to be invented. Then they both went over to the couch and Jay was kind of like "what the fuck? we only expected Sheryl to come over. who are you again?"

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz Phair Liz Phair Liz Phair.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sheryl Crow Sheryl Crow Sheryl Crow Sheryl Crow.

(i'm gonna keep sceaming it until i never hear it again)

considering the desired aim, that appears a pretty ...mmm, mad method, no?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm kinda hoping that it will work as an incantation. that those words will disappear in a puff of smoke. i mean from the day exile came out until last month's spin. enough already.

scott seward, Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

seen, mon. didn't know that b'queenie blahblah was that relentless.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

In this august's spin she is referred to on the contents page as a "radio-loving blowjob queen" and in the intro to her article she is called "Chicago's beloved blowjob queen". all because of one completely impressionistic song from how many years ago? same with GQ magazine a month or so back. i mean what the fuck.

my favorite quote from the spin thing:"I was basically saying,"Fuck all you guys", and they were like,"No,fuck you,Liz Phair", and I was like, "No,fuck you!" That's what Exile In Guyville was really about. Everyone in that scene thought I was too suburban and liked mainstream music too much and never cared who was in Green River. All my boyfriends were big music heads, so that's how I acquired good taste in music-but I ALWAYS liked radio songs. They're all purists in the indie world, and I hate that."

scott seward, Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Neither nor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

When you write a song with that line in it, and then you try to disavow what you were doing during that time while currently trying to break out to a larger audience, it's going to be brought up and put back in your face.

Liz Phair ruined her own career in 1993, and she didn't even know it.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 3 August 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

what does the rs in the title of this thread stand for?

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ryne sandburg

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Presumably, "TS" (or "taking sides"). A typo?

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz. Just for "Exile in Guyville",an alltime classic. Though apart from that 2x7" I've bever heard anything else, and to be honest I don't want to. I think it would ruin the memories...

Ben Dot, Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz Phair has had her moments but they have past. Her recent work will be very hard to recover from.

Sheryl has had more moments (brilliant to even more brilliant), passed off less turds and remained fairly steady throughout her career.

And, even will all t he murmur about Liz's sexual exploits, I believe, based solely on intuition, that Sheryl is a far superior romp in the sack than Ms Phair.

4 Finger Tony, Saturday, 9 August 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

well, I'm glad that's all cleared up now, 4 Finger Tony. thanks!

go fuck yourself, blount

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 9 August 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz Phair. Sheryl Crow is a bore. At least Liz Phair's boredom is intriguing.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Saturday, 9 August 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

well excuse me!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Saturday, 9 August 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, what does that even mean, anyway?

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 9 August 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

calmati!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Saturday, 9 August 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Though she has some pretty good songs, Liz Phair is not as clever, witty or insightful as she or her fans thinks she is. Her latest effort is profoundly embarrassing.

Sheryl Crow's outing with the Kid is not as bad as one would predict. Though not her best, it is much better than the Avril Lavigne knockoff song Ms Phair has laid on the the world.

bran, Saturday, 9 August 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

matos: the poor man's rj smith.

I would like top see a Matos bathing suit calendar. But then I have never possesed the tastes of the common man

jerryfalwell, Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

When I started a Sheryl Crow C/D aaaaages ago ILM looked at me as if I were mad (I said "Classic" at least when the hits album comes out, that was before "Soak Up The Sun" though which is rotten). So I reckon a lot of the board's newfound Sheryl love is simply another excuse to bash Liz Phair.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i really dig sheryl crow, stuff like "soak up the sun" and "all i wanna do is have some fun" is far from being mediocre. so based on what i've heard, i prefer crow, though i would like to hear phair's new album.
