Egad, I didn't know their CD was out already. But they do totally rule. I've seen them live about five times since they got together; the guitarist is amazing. The song with the little bits of surf guitar always makes me swoon.

Ian Johnson (elmo oxygen), Sunday, 3 August 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it's out, lauren got her copy because she is "special" (it's true, she is special, in a very good way). Now I'm intrigued to hear it.

BTW lauren I forgot to tell you that Nick Nolte (!) was at the (Smog) show last night. I forgot to ask him to reimburse the band for our van being towed during "The Hulk."

hstencil, Sunday, 3 August 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I came into this thread making bets with myself about Gygax! posting about me posting being here first.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

who won?

hstencil, Sunday, 3 August 2003 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

they're selling the ep at shows, and it's supposed to be available via skin graft mail order but the link doesn't work. i'd recommend getting it by whatever means necessary. one of the rare instances recently in which i've been equally impressed with a live show and a recording. i've turned into such a superfan that i want to go to providence next week to see them, which is kind of creepy and irrational and not terribly in character for me.

ps- we'll have a listening party when you get back, stence. we can get drunk, dance around, and curse nick nolte.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

my roommate saw them last night and he says they're the balls

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

that means they're good

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

kind of like being the tits?

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

kinda like how "She's Got Balls" by AC/DC is a song complimenting a woman.

hstencil, Monday, 4 August 2003 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren yes but mustier

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok I can't miss their next show even though AS220 is going to be a sauna, isn't it. I've missed too many as it is - was worried about a letdown b/c of high expectations brought on by 6FS and Arab on Radar.

Speaking of which, what's the deal w/the massive Providence Declares War event? is that venue huge? will it be hard to get a ticket? I haven't lived here long so am not too well informed. :)

daria g (daria g), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

daria : yea, that venue is WAY too small./

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i was under the impression that if something was the dog's balls, that it was bee's knees, and therefore, completely awesome.

meanwhile, if something's the balls, it's bollocks, and therefore, completely crappy.

of course, by the above you'd assume that awesome was the opposite of crappy... but then "it's the shit" would make reverse sense.

elbow macaroni?

msp, Monday, 4 August 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

these niggas couldn't be stars if they were thrown by Chinese ninjas

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Nolte was on Charlie Rose the other night and it was better then any rock show I've ever seen.

Dan Selzer, Monday, 4 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

shouldn't you be tracking down someone who knows someone who babysat for one of the desperate bicycles or something?

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 4 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan Selzer, do you work for vee aitch 1?? this is Elisha!!! your graphic design lady never called me back :(

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No, sorry. I work for Eff See Bee. I wish I had a graphic design lady.

Dan Selzer, Monday, 4 August 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

dan? i take back my sarcastic comment and promise to be your graphic design lady if you come over and hold my hand because this storm is scaring the HOLY LIVING BEJESUS out of me. please? i'll play you the chinese stars ep.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 4 August 2003 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Nick Nolte tell Charlie Rose "I've been a fan of yours for years" in a raspy voice too?

Don't be afraid of rain, lauren.

hstencil, Monday, 4 August 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, I avoided I Love Music for years because I thought it would be a huge waste of my time and energies, only to be sucked in with a discussion about one of my favorite bands(the Homosexuals) by my old and dear friend Lauren who is now showing me EXACTLY why I didn't want to make a habit out of yet another internet community-type thing, as within a few short hours I've been teased and am now being invited to get hit by lightning. Are these the sort of things the I Love Music community wants to read about? And yeah Lauren, I read teh VH1 thing before I noticed your comment about the Desperate Bicycles. Now excuse me, i have to go write an email to the lead singer of Blitzkrieg Bop, the Gynaecologists and Bascax.

Dan Selzer, Monday, 4 August 2003 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry Dan!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sorry. i'm distinctly grouchy having spent two hours tonight in a nail salon, listening to (among other choice tunes) "from a distance", "can't stop lovin' you", and "she's like the wind."
it would have been a lot cooler if they had played the chinese stars.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It would've been even cooler if Nick Nolte had been there.

hstencil, Tuesday, 5 August 2003 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
The CD fuckin rules. Too short, too short. More akin to AOR than 6FS. The rhythms remain the same, but the guitar incorporates more "traditional" structure and dynamics. It's not just the monochromatic screeching that AOR mastered.

i notice that due to my current diet and not seeing my girlfriend during the week, my semen has become much more thick and stinky. :(

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I really didn't need to read that last sentence.

hstencil, Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You smell your semen?

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, ick.
anyway, chinese stars will be playing october 30th at lit in nyc. i will be djing. come see the band, come see me. we all rule, i promise.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

While we're plugging Providence bands playing in NY, ya'll should go see Knifestorm and Japanese Karaoke Afterlife Experiment at Free103 on the 26th.

I'm bored here in new york a lot so i just smoke pot. people need to FILL ME IN about SHOEZZ

Ian Johns0n, Thursday, 16 October 2003 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK it finally got stuck...

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

PS: JON WILLIAMS

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

so what's it sound like? I was admiring it in the store, but it was priced around $15... is it more AOR or more SFS? Or neither? Help?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

the dusted review is excellent (like you would expect less).

it is $12 postage paid from skingraft (which is, yes, expensive for an EP but it is was a unique package).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a pre-release version on a normal CD; not as cool, but it doesn't get stuck in CD players.

I AM NOT A HOSTFOR YOU

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

$12 vs. a broken CD drive? you make the call IAN JOHNSON.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

My roommate has it: it's shaped like a star OMG that is SO cool. When I heard it I liked it too.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

great ep -- but i hate "special shape" cds with a fiery passion.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 6 November 2003 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i've only heard it twice because of the shape... no play on my computahg!

of course, nobody can rip it, rip it good either!

the music industry should release all cds on weird shaped cds... then nobody'd ever be able to file share em cause of their cd trays... (well, unless you have one of those pop out and plug on types that are popular with laptops.

msp, Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

msp! you can always aux in your discman too!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 November 2003 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

truest of the true... auxin on the discman is the secret solution... it was on the tip of my blowhole... eep!

kephm, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw that show last night, i liked the stars enough, a great guitar sound, but the vocals just made me think bad jesus lizard

kephm, Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:51 (twenty years ago)

the chinese stars are TEH MEH. I liked Arab on Radar HELLZ more.

The full length is ok...nothing to shit your chif over.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:32 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen Made in Mexico or Athletic Automation yet.

I've only heard bad things.

sigh.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:34 (twenty years ago)

OK...fast forward 6 hours/3 beers later, the chinese stars LP is pretty good. I only listened casually at first. Anyway, it's way stronger then the EP, they are doing the D34TH DI5K0 thing, really pretty digestable...which I think put me off at first...I wanted the HERK and JERK of Arab on Radar...

Anyway, Rare Sensation appears to be a grower.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 18 June 2004 01:12 (twenty years ago)

music to fake epilepsy to! saw them tonite. so much stupid thrashing and faggotry. awesome.

andrew l. r. (allocryptic), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:08 (twenty years ago)

I picked up the new album tonight; haven't listened yet. the show was good, though. i was surprise that i enjoyed !!! as much as I did. they have teh energy and whatnot. From the mp3s i'd heard I expected bad new wave/dance crap. They were pretty good.

But I'm with you; I like Arab on Radar waaaay more.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:09 (twenty years ago)

yea chinese stars sound more like radio 4 than aor...

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:30 (twenty years ago)

awesome show! EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DANCING

is this cd still good, lauren?

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 31 October 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago)

if you're there...

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 31 October 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago)

the full length sucks

LE CHUCK!™ (ex machina), Sunday, 31 October 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago)

jon OTM.. the EP is decent, the album sucks. i gave away my copy of it after owning it for less than a month. all the songs on it sound the same, the production is shiny and smooth and awful. lyrically even more tedious than the last one (moving away from AOR's shock-rock schtick was a bad idea.)
