Alex Ward, cool. Tell him Camp Blackfoot and Ebola Meltdown are sorely missed. (Actually, not that you were going to, don't, because I don't know how amicably or otherwise they split and anyway I'd guess that concentrating on this kind of stuff is what he likes best. But. It's true.)

H, sorry it's taken me a week to reply, but here goes. The DJ Dolores gig was at the 100 Club, London. They were so charming with their Pernambuco rhythms that are so hard to nail down.

Changing the subject, this is hardly anything you wouldn't know, but I'd like to say that I'm going to see Beck next week!

Oh and I have played twice so far in August with my percussion group Maracatu Estrela do Norte. We're very inconsistent at the moment, but I'll let you know some dates when we get a bit tighter!

Daniel (dancity), Monday, 11 August 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

whois going to sunset junction?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a good time. even though we were packed like sardines, but me and bob sat at the front for the first half. My leg was dead towards the end of the first set and it wasn't a neat end at all: with derek just saying (once everyone went quiet): 'Why don't we stop and allow for a break?' (how nice of him). Some really top group interaction though if you were at the back you may not have not thought much of it.

Then there was a duo (derek/girl with the bricks) and a trio (bevan, ward and dictaphone fella: loads of bird/duck calls on that) with a final set quintet.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Capitol k at the Vibe bar tomorrow (Tuesday) night. It's free, as well!

Kate/Suzy, are you sure this is happening? Cos I thought that was *last* month...

Either way, rather fun Aussie organrockers *cough* Rocket Science play a freebie at the Buffalo Bar tonight as well.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

buck 65 in the u.k.

i'm going to see him on the 18th in Glasgow.

Excited? me?

jed-e-3, Tuesday, 12 August 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Contrary to popular belief, I've kind of enjoyed every Derek Bailey gig I've ever been to but let's not re-open that can o' worms. I liked Set#2 (DB and the Brick Woman), mostly because you could hear what DB was doing a little clearer and Set#4 (the whole band). The set with no DB I didn't like at all although it seemed to go down best with the rest of the audience.

I've come to the conclusion that Derek Bailey is the Sir Bobby Robson of the avant-garde, he's very hard to actually dislike. Plus how often do you get to see a seminal musician (albeit in a rather attenuated field) perform for five quid (or 2.50 with concessions)?!!?!??! The only other places you can see legendary musicians for that little are Folk Clubs, which none of the hipster brigade seem to have discovered (a.k.a. ruined) yet and which New Labour appears to be bent on stamping out - Come the Revolution!!!!!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone tell me if the Vibe Bar is still happening tonite?

Alex K (Alex K), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I briefly reported what happened. Apart from my meh 'some top group interaction' comment i didn't really say much abt what i thought of the rest.

I think set 2 with 'brick woman' was excellent but I think even in the quintet she was interacting with derek a bit more than the others. Maybe i just noticed that a bit more. And duets are gonna be a bit easier for everyone

I think ppl liked set 3 bcz it got pretty loud with the horns. It was ok but the fella witht the dictaphone did get stuck at times throughout that set and the final group set.

Overall the quintet were really great in moments but I thought that the 'brick woman' and 'dictaphone guy' were not engaging as much with the two horn players. And likewise, bevan and ward were on a duet a lot of the time as well. or maybe i notice that a bit more bcz in free improv you'll get horn duets on disc. But derek got it going with the others at diff points.

''I've come to the conclusion that Derek Bailey is the Sir Bobby Robson of the avant-garde, he's very hard to actually dislike.''

I don't go out to gigs to actually dislike ppl. I don't know what you're getting at.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

If you know anything about Bobby Robson you will

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I admit when I saw the Brick Lady showing up, I thought, "What is this drippy cow up to?" but I thought she was very good. The Dictaphone Guy impressed me rather less. By the way, if you like Sir Derek you should check out John Russell, who is virtually Derek Bailey Jr. (tho maybe not so Jr. anymore), and runs the monthly club at the Red Rose and often plays and I prefer to Delboy in some ways.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I've got some John russell on disc. I like him. isn't there something at the red rose on this sunday?
