Music a la Soft Pink Truth

So I've been listening to Do You Party?, and I'm really into it, and it's clicky poppy funk.

First of all, the side question: am I right in believing this is being referred to as 'microhouse', or is that something different?

Mainly, though, can anyone point me in the direction of albums/individual tracks in this vein?

not exactly the same as soft pink, but anything off the label Kompakt is pretty microhouse.

as for some suggestions:
schneider tm - moist (album)
pantytec - pony slaystation (album)
any michael mayer mixes.. try 'immer'

these arent as "electroclashy" or funky as softpink, but they might just do the job...

Zongamin album well worth a listen, as is Playgroup - titles both eponymous

Softpinktruth isn't funky though. It's like all yer favourite electro-funk records ever with the funk surgically removed (okay, there's a bit of funk in "Promofunk", but even then not too much!)

Which is not to say it's bad. But it's very misrepresented.

Tim Finney otm, though that's not to say it won't jam a party.

Yeah, the funk factor is a little underrepresented on the SPT records, but they are pretty good for what they are. I esp. like the track he did on the Night Owls 02 compilation on Deluxe. The use of vocals is a little more detailed than on the Perlon records, but the sounds aren't completely off. The record that sounds closest to it to me is the excellent 12" on Kompakt that Joachim Spieth did called "Abi '99."

I know this isn't totally related, but has anyone else heard those Andy Vaz Sound-Variations records? I think they are the best representation of "microhouse" as I take it which is an offshoot of house with digital detritus, non-traditional sampling, etc. as sound sources. These records are amazing combinations of dissonance and nuance all happening simultaneously. TIP!

Okay, perhaps "funky" was a little over-exaggerated: I mainly took that cue from previous discussions -- lazy, I know. But I think that is mostly irrelevant (I don't mean this in a dismissive way to yr opinions), so many thanks for the pointers!

Not nearly as many blips 'n' burps 'n' clicks 'n' pops in it, but Brooks' You, Me and Us should be considered in the same company as SPT, Herbert, Pantytec. One track's a descendent of the Family's Screams of Passion, another couple have some Was (Not Was)-like nonsensical humor elements. Others are stiffer, colder, like the last Swayzak album. It has playful tendencies and was almost completely slept on when it came out last year.

So is SPT faking the funk? I still haven't heard it. If the funk is gone what are the record's strong points?

I'm not crazy about this one -- seems kinda dry & lifeless to me. What do you think of Soul Center? Brinkmann brings da funk.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

soul center i only know "3" it's a bit klunky & v teutonic. prod sounds too cheap maybe it's d.i.y. chic. it's not BAD per se, i just don't feel it has the lascivious prancing squelchy squirmy funk in it like i was expecting from soft pink truth they didn't deliver either.
i mean, seriously isthat soft pink truth album as good as the Jack Ofiicers "digital dump"?? sure it's all prottools / logicced to the hilt but at least the buttholes that participated in the JO's despite having an apple mac w/ whatever midi & smaple shit was available in '89, got together some shit drum sounds in a comical loosespinctered camp as hell pfunk techno rubbish kinda way. i do like SPT's "big booty bitches" tho cos i'm easily pleased. i think maybe the matmos guys set themselves up perhaps unwittingly as a curio "oh we used to do the soundtracks for gay fisting films" "he's my boyfriend" there seems to be more hyperbole about them being bjork's pet gay techno wizards than there is word of mouth zeal for the matmos music (i still love "the west" or whatever that was called - that's da bidniss). i dunno

The first Geeez'n'Gosh record was really good I thought. It's very funky, but in a quirky way with lots of irregular rhythms. "Soul of Mine" is a killer track. I didn't really fall much for the second one though.

direct_program, Monday, 4 August 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Geez n Gosh seems really groove based, - Soul Center to me is fucking boring. some odl samples with a techno kick added?

It's probably not a great comparison, just that they both sample old records for hooks & strip things down. But the best Soul Center I've heard is v. funky, where I don't remember hearing that on Nobody Knows (I sold it I think or I would put it on now).
