what is the creepiest chicago house classic?

i've always gone for the dark, creepy, trippy stuff from the early chicago trax/dj international era. the best of which would have to be "7 ways" by hercules. no?

notfazed (notfazed), Monday, 4 August 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh boy. I'm going to get my pen and paper out for this one.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 4 August 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the correct answer is also the obvious one: "acid trax" because nobody else dubbed it out thirteen minutes. at the end it's like listening to the air raid siren over a desolate city.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

You make me want to take it out and listen to it right now with that lovely metaphor.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

can't remember the name of the track but late 80's I sold a spooky 12" on trax to a guy who wanted some house to cheer up his boyfriend. a couple of weeks later i heard he committed suicide.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Suicide Machine were on Trax, weren' they? It must have been them.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

PARENTS, WHERE'S YOUR CHILD?

CURFEW CURFEW

nobody likes to be left alone
especially when they don't know right from wrong . . .

YOU'RE ALL MY CHILDREN NOW

etc, Monday, 4 August 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tyree, "I Fear the Night"--one of the worst vocals evah but that just sort of adds to its cheap-ass majesty

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually find the gorgeous smoothness of "Your Love" much creepier than any of the full-on acid tracks (although they are mostly brill obv.)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 4 August 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

1) bam bam - where's your child

2) phuture - your only friend

3) sleazy d - i've lost control

stirmonster, Monday, 4 August 2003 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

'seven ways to jack'[ is......!!!!!!!!

stirmonster, Monday, 4 August 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

surely 'No Way Back' by Adonis?

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 4 August 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Distant Planet!

(Actually, everything above should be tied for first.)

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 4 August 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

stirmonster otm as on the 808 thread...

disco stu (disco stu), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the metaphor in where's your child is so brilliant...

disco stu (disco stu), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the Trax U Lost or whatever it's called by the Housemaster Boys or whatever they're called, and also Your Love, both are dark and sexy. I like it more minimal then lots of the "House Halucinates" type acid stuff.

Dan Selzer, Monday, 4 August 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I was playing "Baby Wants to Ride" at my college radio station (which was located near the snack bar and pool tables) and some Sorority-like girls gave me a look that I am sure they never expected to use on anyone unless that person happened to be a 70 year old man masturbating on a park bench on a Sunday morning.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

As a resident, I would just like to add the average person in Chicago would have no fucking clue about this stuff.

Can we count Juan Atkins stuff?

ben welsh (benwelsh), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Master C & J - "When You Hold Me"

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Juan is detroit techno, not chicago house, but if we're gonna include detroit, there's so much good stuff, my fave, very dark New Wavey detroit techno song is Octave One's I Believe.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

but "I Believe" is so lush and proto-Pacific State!

I'll second "Acid Trax", especially the "Cocaine Mix" with the robot James Earl Jones announcing: "This is Cocaine Speaking"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

green velvet-the stalker, it is classic ok.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

everytime I play "I Believe" my DJ "partner" says "what 808 State is this again?"

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Tyree's 'Video Crash' is pretty dark (sort of the pleasure of being hit with bullets..ahem...not that I from experience ;)

Omar (Omar), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

speak from experience of course...other than hearing it at topvolume just the other day on the dancefloor.

Omar (Omar), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Video Clash by Lil' Louis.

I Believe is good, but the Octave One classic that is always over looked is Nicolette.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Which reminds me that nobody has mentioned 'Blackout' by Lil'Louis.

Omar (Omar), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

k. alexi - all for lee-sah

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Bang The Box - Farley Jackmaster Funk

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The Poke - Adonis

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 11 August 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
Maybe not that creepy, but I figured all you creepy Chicago fans would appreciate this: Slick Homies - Explicit Lyrics Traxx EP, on Dance Mania.

samples from hardwax: http://hardwax.com/00248/

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

i figured mid-90s dance mania stuff would be crap (just getting into the label) but this is pretty awesome. i like aaron's story about creeping out those girls... i bet they would totally rock to this on a floor, though.

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 05:33 (eighteen years ago)

i especially love the can you feel it? sample on masturbation

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 05:34 (eighteen years ago)

well, not a sample. rearrangement.

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 05:34 (eighteen years ago)

so, la forza del destino is basically some very good dance mania aping, huh?

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

dance mania = opposite of crap

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, now i know! i just figured they would have started releasing crap by then because i thought the market for chicago house wasn't very big in 1994. was it?

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Somewhere in West Hell

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

you learn something new about dance music every day

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

A lot of the juke house that gets played on chicago radio to this day popped up around '96

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

can you define juke house? is it really tracky chicago house? or jazzy?

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

it took fader longer than i expected to come around on that stuff

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

hank (hank s), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

friday on the porch (lfam), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

Ragtyme - 'I Can't Stay Away' is a one of my favorite darker chicago tracks.

Jacob Sanders (LolVStein), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 04:31 (eighteen years ago)

seven months pass...

great thread.
especially having picked up this superb compilation today : http://www.discogs.com/release/866209
bringing back lots of memories, just a shame that Move your Body has been lifted off a 3rd gen. cassette and sounds dreadful.

mark e, Friday, 31 August 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

Answer: Bang! You're Mine - Bang the Party

sexyDancer, Friday, 31 August 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

'move your body' is real real easy to find tho so thats not really an issue

deej, Friday, 31 August 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)
