Unpacking the phrase "backpacker aesthetic"

excellent! did you use meatballs and cold cuts from the wedding buffet to graphically illustrate certain points?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 4 August 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

did you use meatballs and cold cuts from the wedding buffet to graphically illustrate certain points?

No. However, I did actually say, "You know how I was about rock music a long time ago? They're like that, kind off, except about rock."

Ess (Ess), Monday, 4 August 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"except about rap," I mean. I am still hungover, two days later.

Ess (Ess), Monday, 4 August 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

trying to discuss Eminem's cultural significance with your ex-girlfriend's completely drunk mom at a wedding reception

A damn noble effort,
whether drunk or sober.

also, please tell me you quoted lyrics.

Do you think she learned a lot from your conversation?

This isn't the reason the g/f is now 'ex' is it?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, he's dating the mom now.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ess what was her take??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

also, please tell me you quoted lyrics.

Not really, except for an edited-unto-uselessness section of "My Dad's Gone Crazy." The lowest moment was when I was trying to explain the Em vs. Benzino beef and ended up talking about Barthes.

Do you think she learned a lot from your conversation?

I'd like to think so. That's largely contingent on how much of the evening she ended up remembering.

This isn't the reason the g/f is now 'ex' is it?

No, that was all long ago. We are now stalwart pals, which kind of made the whole exchange weirder.

Ess (Ess), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"The lowest moment was when I was trying to explain the Em vs. Benzino beef and ended up talking about Barthes."

I just had to try very hard to stifle laughter here in work... you are my hero also...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ess what was her take??

Her take was mostly an Eminem-what's-all-the-fuss query and since she knows I have way too many opinions about pop music, I guess I seemed the guy to ask. Like a lot of people of her age (I've had effectively the same chat with my own relatives), Eminem has for whatever reason been the person who alerted them to the fact that rap is an "art" and, therefore, is interesting. (Why my dad, for example, has always had difficulty with this notion while persisting in listening to Ten Years After is a puzzlement to me.)

Ess (Ess), Monday, 4 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Why anyone would listen to Ten Years After is more the puzzlement, but hey.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 4 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a similar conversation with my dad in a somewhat similar setting -- early in the evening of my bachelor party, actually (later in the evening, my dad resisted my effort to gently persuade him and his cousin not to come to the strip club -- where, of course, my friends bought a lap dance. Getting a lap dance with your dad nearby while your little brother's throwing up in the strip club bathroom, C/D?). But anyway, at the actual wedding two nights later, my dad and mom and sister and brother all got up and danced with the rest of the crowd to "Without Me." The family that dances to Eminem together...uh...something...

this whole thread is full of heroes.

Today's lesson: never try to explain, discuss or even bring up the term "backpacker aesthetic" with anyone. Ever.

nine years pass...

another good thread
