My biopsychology tutor has got me back into Fluke in a big way (Six Wheels ... was one of the first records I bought after rocking up in Edinburgh in 1993). He's also given me a copy of the 2 Bit Pie album, which I'm listening to now -- effectively a rebadged Fluke. Came out two years ago; I'd never heard of it, and a cursory search of this place suggests nobody else has either.
It's not desperately good so far, although I'm only one track in. Like a more squelchy, old-skool Fluke. Meh.

there were some pretty good Fluke live shows on their website last year. not sure if they're still there. actually, not sure where they were to begin with but there are some good live sets out there if you're needing some additional Fluke stuffs. 2 Bit Pie: bought it, ripped it, listened to it, deleted it, sold it.

"Atom Bomb" has endured inclusion on the Wipeout XL soundtrack and a General Motors tv campaign and still makes it onto a few of my mix-CDs. I've never delved deeper than Risotto, but I consider it an equal to the other electronica crossover artists (like Underworld) of the same era.
― derelict, Friday, 5 December 2008 21:14 (sixteen years ago)
I like Risotto a lot more than everything on Second Toughest... with the exception of the track "Pearl's Girl".

I played Oto to death when it was out. I guess you could argue they're a Happy Shopper Underworld in some ways, but maybe more grounded in Electro or something?
― Me and Ruth Lorenzo, Rollin' in the Benzo (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 December 2008 12:09 (sixteen years ago)
I WAS WRONG. 2 Bit Pie turned out to be kinda awesome in parts: downbeat angry electro clattering. Right up my alley.
― grimly fiendish, Saturday, 6 December 2008 16:21 (sixteen years ago)
I still have an early record of theirs...whatever had that Joni song with the Joni Mitchell sample. I can't remember what it's called. I have it on vinyl if anyone cares. I absolutely flipped over it at the time. Pulled it out years later and it didn't sound so amazing.
― Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 6 December 2008 20:21 (sixteen years ago)
sounds like you could almost call it a fluke, Bimble, eh?
― rentboy, Sunday, 7 December 2008 03:58 (sixteen years ago)
also, my favorite thing Fluke ever did is Reeferendrum (as appears misspelled on S&D's NE2 and on the album Risotto)
But I'm also a big fan of the whole "Groovy Feeling" single, so many great mixes of an alltime great track.
I'm with Dan Perry above, they've had an amazing set of singles throughout their career.
Definitely Classique

It's only two tracks. check out the rest, though.
― StanM, Thursday, 25 December 2008 18:31 (sixteen years ago)
i got into fluke while everyone else was digging underworld. only got oto and risotto but they're both gold, the former especially. 'bullet' and 'ok' are jams 4 all time.
― sister s (ledge), Thursday, 25 December 2008 19:34 (sixteen years ago)
That typical driving Fluke beat/bassline is so great! I mean, Electric Guitar (humbucker) - just cannot sit still.
― StanM, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)
I was thinking of a May I Dedicate A Little Poll To Fluke, but I doubt there'd be more than five votes :-(
― StanM, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)
I really love Fluke, especially the 3 albums after Techno Rose of Blighty
― brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 01:13 (fourteen years ago)
i picked up the six wheels .. cd for a wallet busting 99p a couple of weeks ago (along with a grid cd)totally love it.
― mark e, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 08:50 (fourteen years ago)
Love Oto, and Risotto ain't half bad, but picked up six wheels... some time ago and it was eeeuuuuurgh get this jazz outta my face.
― nanoflymo (ledge), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 13:17 (fourteen years ago)
well that's how i remember it, 'electric guitar' isn't sounding too bad right now though.
― nanoflymo (ledge), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)
man the moodier stuff on Six Wheels is fantastic - "Slowmotion" and "Astrosapiens" especially

― brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 28 March 2013 19:20 (twelve years ago)
for some reason this album passed me by on the first couple listens but now I'm starting to think it's really good? like about as good as the best Fluke albums.
Syntax's album rules too. shame they didn't do more.
― frogbs, Monday, 15 February 2016 15:31 (nine years ago)
Idk, I used to like fluke for their lyrics, especially on oto, they were different and inventive and usually good fun. Then I get to track 3 of 2 pie island and it's "nobody never made me feel like you do"... well as long as he's happy ಠ_ಠ

lol I was listening to Risotto this morning and thinking "wow, after the first two tracks it's like Fluke had this great idea just to make an entire album's worth of tracks like "Pearls Girl" - I bet Dan would love it."
Possible thread idea: X artist's album Y = an extended meditation on B artist's solitary track C.
― Tim F, Sunday, 4 February 2018 22:29 (seven years ago)
So, found 'Oto' a couple of weeks ago.Its basically a 'Shriekback does ambient techno' album given that both Barry and Martyn are featured throughout.it sounds absolutely fantastic.
― mark e, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:56 (six years ago)
Oto & Risotto still rule, yes
― StanM, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 16:21 (six years ago)
I have 'Six Wheels .. ' and enjoy it, but I have to say, I love the presence of Barry on 'Oto'.Will track down Risotto, but its not often I see ambient/techno cds in charity shops round these parts.

Will track down Risotto, but its not often I see ambient/techno cds in charity shops round these parts
took a couple of years, but i got there eventually.picked up Risotto yesterday for a few quid.Six Wheels, Risotto, and Oto : what an amazing run of albums.
― mark e, Saturday, 6 November 2021 20:51 (three years ago)
at the moment, my fav track is Reeferendrum. (a remix of Absurd, but not labeled as such on the album - on the Absurd singles it was)

― frogbs, Monday, 2 May 2022 18:37 (three years ago)
fr though Fluke is pretty cool, always wanted to grab some of their stuff on vinyl cuz it's generally cheap (outside of Risotto) but you'd have to import it which would cost like twice what the record itself does
wonder whatever happened to Syntax. they had some 3xEP thing lined up but only released the first one. ten years ago. I'm guessing they ain't gonna do the other two

found something very cool the other day - the Six Wheels On My Wagon 2xLP
has a sticker that says "comes with bonus Techno Rose of Blighty EP" but sadly it did not. oh well it was only $12 because it was beat to shit and I bought it because I thought maybe it could be cleaned
and I was right! the records look ROUGH but outside of the first 30 sec or so of each side they're pretty decent! or maybe pulsating techno music covers up surface noise well (in fact I'm sure this is it, between tracks you hear it but once the beat drops its inaudible). I do notice this with a lot of 90s electronic stuff, the records themselves look dirty but actually play nice.
fantastic album, idk what you call this sort of video game techno but it rules so much. it fits in with stuff like Brown Album & those early Underworld singles but also still sounds very Madchester. "Astrosapiens" man what a tune
― frogbs, Thursday, 31 August 2023 00:49 (two years ago)
Also file under progressive house I guess. Techno Rose of Blighty is great too - definitely check out Philly or Joni for some funky techno synth pop.And they released some fantastic mixes of Groovy Feeling & Electric Guitar (LollyGobbleChocBomb!). Really miss those days when the 12" would be 40 odd minutes of remixes, often by the band themselves.

First half of Puppy (stretch from My Spine to Switch/Twitch) is pretty damn good upon revisiting. Overall not a bad record, but not nearly the iconic behemoth Risotto was. Hard to follow up one of the best big beat albums of the 90's, just ask Crystal Method.
If this new one is as good as Puppy I'll consider it a win. It's hugely unlikely anything they release will be as wall to wall epic as Risotto.

good to have them back, not sure how I felt at first but the second half won me over
vocals kinda strange on this though, maybe it's the YouTube sound quality but something doesn't seem right about them. also it doesn't quite line up with the music
