Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Four o'clock in the afternoon
and I didn't feel like very much.
I said to myself, "Where are you golden boy,
where is your famous golden touch?"
I thought you knew where
all of the elephants lie down,
I thought you were the crown prince
of all the wheels in Ivory Town.
Just take a look at your body now,
there's nothing much to save
and a bitter voice in the mirror cries,
"Hey, Prince, you need a shave."
Now if you can manage to get
your trembling fingers to behave,
why don't you try unwrapping
a stainless steel razor blade?
That's right, it's come to this,
yes it's come to this,
and wasn't it a long way down,
wasn't it a strange way down?
There's no hot water
and the cold is running thin.
Well, what do you expect from
the kind of places you've been living in?
Don't drink from that cup,
it's all caked and cracked along the rim.
That's not the electric light, my friend,
that is your vision growing dim.
Cover up your face with soap, there,
now you're Santa Claus.
And you've got a gift for anyone
who will give you his applause.
I thought you were a racing man,
ah, but you couldn't take the pace.
That's a funeral in the mirror
and it's stopping at your face.
That's right, it's come to this,
yes it's come to this,
and wasn't it a long way down,
ah wasn't it a strange way down?

Once there was a path
and a girl with chestnut hair,
and you passed the summers
picking all of the berries that grew there;
there were times she was a woman,
oh, there were times she was just a child,
and you held her in the shadows
where the raspberries grow wild.
And you climbed the twilight mountains
and you sang about the view,
and everywhere that you wandered
love seemed to go along with you.
That's a hard one to remember,
yes it makes you clench your fist.
And then the veins stand out like highways,
all along your wrist.
And yes it's come to this,
it's come to this,
and wasn't it a long way down,
wasn't it a strange way down?

You can still find a job,
go out and talk to a friend.
On the back of every magazine
there are those coupons you can send.
Why don't you join the Rosicrucians,
they can give you back your hope,
you can find your love with diagrams
on a plain brown envelope.
But you've used up all your coupons
except the one that seems
to be written on your wrist
along with several thousand dreams.
Now Santa Claus comes forward,
that's a razor in his mit;
and he puts on his dark glasses
and he shows you where to hit;
and then the cameras pan,
the stand in stunt man,
dress rehearsal rag,
it's just the dress rehearsal rag,
you know this dress rehearsal rag,
it's just a dress rehearsal rag.

Famous Blue Raincoat - although I would have probably shit my pants by now.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

For years and years, the answer was Famous Blue Raincoat. But then the answer became The Future. Take This Longing moves me the most (apart from Fingerprints, of course), but the answer is The Future. Now put the gun down. Give it to me. Oh, God: it wasn't even loaded. Ha! The real answer was Minute Prologue!

Hnnnh. Hallelujah or Famous Blue Raincoat if performed by other people but I'll go with songs sung by the man himself so Avalanche. Yes, Avalanche.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I love "The Captain" cuz it's almost a country-western song.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What Scott Seward said--"Dress Rehearsal Rag."

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"God is Alive, Magic is Afoot." no one but Cohen could have written this Gnostic paean (tho' many men have tried. the prolix Mr. David Tibet really should be taking notes) - and none but an acousmatically enhanced Buffy Sainte-Marie could have sung it.

Famous Blue Raincoat. I'd be interested to know who else has performed this song because to me it's one of those songs that should never be covered.

Ben Dot, Tuesday, 5 August 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jennifer Warnes had an album of Cohen covers that was actually entitled Famous Blue Raincoat. and she does a nice version of it too.(she used to sing back-up for him)

scott seward, Tuesday, 5 August 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Give me Leonard Cohen Afterworld... and some cherry flavored antacids and shit like that with my Pennyroyal Tea

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Either "Everybody Knows" or "Is This What You Wanted" or "So Long, Marianne." There are several others that are very close.

"A Singer Must Die" seconded.

Recommendation of Jennifer Warnes cover album - also seconded.

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 20 August 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

If your life depends on the other person liking it, it would have to be Suzanne, Hallelujah, or That's No Way To Say Goodbye. For myself, I would say Sisters of Mercy, although I really like all the Songs of Love and Hate songs that people are naming.

It's interesting -- Songs of Love and Hate has always been my favorite Cohen album, more so than the first, but I'm still surprised at all the shoutouts for Avalanche, Dress Rehersal Rag, Joan of Arc here. (Not so surprised at Famous Blue Raincoat, of course -- Warnes did almost as much for that song as Buckley did for Hallelujah or Collins did for Suzanne.) But most of those songs (other than Joan of Arc) really don't have any kind of chorus, so it's hard to make them "the best" (even if Cohen just isn't big on choruses). Another SLAH candidate that rarely leaves my brain -- Love Calls You By Your Name.

Jennifer Warnes, Famous Blue Raincoat (album and song) thirded. Her "Joan Of Arc" is stunning.

Jennifer Warnes, "Famous Blue Raincoat" >>>>>> Tori Amos, "Famous Blue Raincoat"

Bono, "Hallelujah" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jeff Buckley, "Hallelujah"

rogermexico (rogermexico), Saturday, 20 August 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I like k.d. lang's Hallelujah the best.

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 20 August 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

The gun pointed at my head would probably make me rather emotional, so I'd probably pick one of his weepier numbers.
