Is there a Butch Morris expert in the house?

I'm sure I would like some of his conductions, but I suspect I would probably hate even more. I saw him once a long time ago, but don't remember much about it, except that I thought it was "okay," if a bit difficult (my usual reaction to avant-garde jazz shows).

You don't have to be an expert, but what have you heard that you've liked or hated, or found indifferent?

I heard he was living in Turkey. That's interesting.

I have two of his Conduction Collection CDs that I got a few years back, listened to once or twice, and then put away until now. Fairly difficult, longish pieces with lots of people playing at once, IIRC. They seemed like something that would be interesting to come back to at some point.

He conducts in NYC here and there. I've got a diff David Murray Big Band conducted by him - how does this differ from his other conductions, if at all?

gabbneb, I am guessing that his conduction with collaborators other than the David Murray Big Band tends to be further away from jazz conventions, more simply "avant-garde." But I am just guessing. A lot of his collaborators on these conduction things are pretty marginal even in free jazz terms (e.g., someone like Hans Reichel, who typically doesn't get labeled as jazz of any sort).

Yes, the ones I've heard mostly dispense with jazz convention - they seem to be coming more from a free improv direction. One is from the Documenta 9 art show in Germany, featuring people like Christian Marclay and J.A. Deane - lots of electronics, live sampling, etc. The other is called "In Freud's Garden", and it has Myra Melford, Zeena Parkins, Hans Koch, Tristan Honsinger, and others.

Just heard a clip from Conduction 25, which involves a lot of Turkish musician! I think I am just going to get this, because it sounds like something have to hear. Frenetic free improv., with relatively straight ney playing coming out of it.

Very sad news. One of my favorites of his is the FMP record with Le Quan Ninh and J.A. Deane. Gonna spin it tonight.
