Other than the country tune, which is more out of place and goofy than horrible, I think this album is as good as 'In Rock'. The studio outtakes are also pretty good on the Fireball deluxe reissue.

I really like the Bolin record. He's no Blackmore, and he sounds like trash on Blackmore-era songs (the solos anyway) but the record is great, better than Stormbringer I think

Stormbringer is so good

“Love don’t mean a thing” almost has a little feat feel

They got pretty funky and r&b-ish on that album and on Come Taste the Band, it was an interesting little phase

There are some decent rhythms and riffs on Burn, Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band, but Coverdale (pompous) and Hughes (generic) as singers just put me off.

the '74/'75 Purple might have evolved into something like Wild Cherry, but Coverdale's vocals were too buttrock for that to happen

I start with the Gillan era and last through Coverdale/Hughes (Made In Europe is a surprisingly good live album) but they don't have a single front-to-back great album. Always a few great songs and a bunch of lazy filler.

The Perfect Strangers album is better than it had any right to be.

I mean, I get this but they also talk in the Burn reissue booklet about how Coverdale as a nerdy, chubby, spotty guy when they found him so it makes it extra funny that he just has this ridiculous voice. I love that shit, personally.

You could say Rod Evans sounds just as full of himself, but on his better songs and the Captain Beyond stuff I linked above, he communicates something more than just puffed-up self-agrandisment. Evans is also uncommon and interesting as a baritone singing hard rock.
