"Lilliput: 1980-1990 compilation"

Who / what's this Alex? Nothing to do with the Swiss band LiLiPUT (originally Kleenex) I presume?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Back in my days as a dubious music journalist in the very early 90's, I prized this compilation from a comely 4AD publicist (it also came with a fetching t-shirt, I hasten to gloat).

Not sure why they called it Liliput, but a suppose a Jonathan Swift allusion is as good as any title.

It's coffee-table book sized, and looks like this:

What 4Ad zealots "Eyesore" say about it:

"The nicely silkscreened cd's are built into the front and back cover of a 10" book. The covers are thick chipboard with a blue and orange Chris Bigg scibble on the front and
a cryptic number thing on the back (33 and 45 rpms, 15 and 300/500). The first half of the book has a short story about the development of 4AD along with various v23
photos. The second half of the book gives each of the bands on disc 2 two pages and a very short description. Also, the book has a shiny gold 4AD logo stuck on the front
and the whole thing is bound with binding tape. At first, it looked like it was taped back together, but after closer examination, it is part of the design. A t-shirt came with
the package. It's grey with the blue and orange design and the number thing. The shirt is 25% polyester! Limited edition of 3000 copies. 2500 were shipped til the USA as
a promo item for Warner Brothers and US retailers. Also released in Taiwan as «The Sounds of 4AD», which might be a bootleg. «A Thousand Stars Burst Open» plays as
a part of the last track and not listed on the cover."

and all the throwing muses albums

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, mostly 90s records.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

interesting - there's almost a consensus as to the best HNIA album.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Have to add:

1) Kristin Hersh - Sunny Border Blue (I swear that in time this record will be rediscovered as an unjustly neglected classic)

2) Breeders - Title TK (also underrated)

3>) Everything by the Pixies (Maybe this is being lazy, but to me the Red House Painters are, well, not quite, and at this moment the Birthday Party are no more than a curiosity. Oh, and I love them.)

*Honourable mention) Breeders - Cannonball

Ben Dot, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

cannonball

surfer rosa

all the this mortal coil albums

and, of course, PUMP UP THE VOLUME

alex- the liliput title came from a little magazine that they used to get alot of their source imagery from - e.g. the spinning lady/ cala lily used on pearly dewdrops' drops.

i think...

jed-e-3, Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god, yes, the red house painters rolercoaster album! that too!

jed-e-3, Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Couldn't name 'em. The Cocteaus alone would take up ten listings or near to it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

then just cheat like i did, ned! we will look the other way.

scott seward, Thursday, 7 August 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 01:10 (fifteen years ago)

best song ever made.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 01:13 (fifteen years ago)

five years pass...

Tanya Donnelly's Whiskey Tango Ghosts is a classic in need of a larger audience. Amazing that two of the best songwriters to emerge over the last 30 years (Donnelly and Kristin Hersh) are stepsisters.
