I had some friends who applied to this thing earlier this year. It seems cool, but the description of the programme seems so bloody self-indulgent and self-agrandizing (sp?). Sure, the chosen few get to listen to talks by folks like Madlib and David Rodigan, but the whole thing seems more of a deification of the DJ and producer. Listening to Bettina Costanzo's little talk is a painful example of egotism at its best.

Am I just an angry and bitter girl? Should I be excited about the fact that something like this exists? Should I ignore my inner sense of hipster hatred? Please make me understand!

Boo hoo. No answers...

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand, sorry.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

So you too think it's obnoxious?

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds like a bunch of shit to me. I thought you were supposed to do this type of stuff in your bedroom with no professional help. Fuck dance music.

How in the fuck am I going to find time to watch all these interviews that I need, need, need, to watch.

the Daniel Wang is ridiculous - he has a flip chart! and starts drawing diagrams to explain music theory - little of which makes much sense.

The Morgan Geist one is fun. The Terre Thaemlitz one is worthwhile 'cos dude is clever. 5 minutes of Sir Mix-A-Lot was all I needed. The Martyn one was so-so.

I'd say stick to the true creators/deserving legends.

But watch the Daniel Wang one.

the guy called gerald one had interesting moments but was really badly moderated and basically felt like it went on for 4 hours

I have to find the time to watch fifteen or so hours of interviews. I hope these stay archived for a while.

I'm gonna miss the free newspaper.

There's Always Been A Dance Element To (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

apart from the sporadic and kinda offensive article which talked about "homos" wearing tight jeans

I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, there was also the sporadic mention of "bitches" and ho-talk and the like. But that didn't stop the majority of the writing being of incredibly high quality and scope for a FREE daily paper.

i liked the radio columns, the stuff about library music and kids tv programmes, and quite a lot of it actually. lots of good stuff in there. wouldnt mind if a real music paper like that was about, but there isnt one :(

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

i wish there were more music papers actually rather than music mags. only mags left it seems are boring ones really.

If anyone has the means to parody this style, make it happen.

Red Bitchass, Friday, 21 February 2014 03:43 (eleven years ago)

A gorgeous-looking book is being put out by RBMA concurrent with the documentary and ILX's own Alfred Soto apparently has an essay about Nile Rodgers in it.

Murgatroid, Friday, 21 February 2014 03:44 (eleven years ago)

I'm interested, as long as it's got weird dimensions that won't fit in any bookcase.
