Van Halen "DOA" vs Iron Maiden "Running Free"

Pickup trucks mean different things on both sides of the water. VH's p.t. symbolizes a stereotype redneck cop/city burgher type with a beergut and a Rotary pin, while IM's song calls forth caravan sites and glue-sniffing and scrap merchants in pub brawls, the subterranean Fred West England. I've got a versh by the latest dive-circuit Paul Di'anno band and the guy's voice has gotten even more shredded and maniacal with time, the mix is really crap and the performance only adequate but PD sounds like the words are impacted wisdom teeth that he's forcing out of his mouth through sheer rage. What a fuckin' song, in any guise. Yeah his replacement coaxed their Genesis/Tull fixation to take over, but there's no way they could've continued with that self-combusting lunatic, which is bad news for their later stuff but definitely lifts their early stuff above the ordinary. "DOA" is great too!

VH at their best could give IM a run to the hills with the devil for their money, but "Runnin' Free" changed my f'in LIFE - utterly gorgeous. I still say that solo Dickinson is underrated though as a song called "The Tower" pulls of the neat trick of making sword and scorcery stuff not sound super-geeky AND pronouncing "fool" even more theatrically than Dio

Yeah, VH at their best are legit rivals especially if you try to match them song for song. A career matchup is joke, me thinks. The main problem is those oh, lets see, seven classic albums Iron Maiden dropped consecutively. Yeah, that'll fuck ya every time.

Good call on the Bruce solo stuff.

Up The Irons.
