Do they listen to cool music where you work?

Overheard 2 Disney employees at the record store today talking about all sorts of obscure bands and they were obviously shopping for new tunes to play at work. Where I work, they listen to Z100 and I hear the same 6 songs over and over.

I've never worked somewhere where the music was "cool" in any way... not even that bullshit techno crap designers claim to like in a desperate attempt to be cool.

Scaredy Cat, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't understand guys who insist that listening to bands like Junkie XL and Pitchshifter helps them focus on design work. Might as well drop on a Whitesnake record or something.

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

my co-worker, joe, and i are the biggest influences on each other's taste. he usually plays really good shit over his computer speakers. our boss however, is a big opera fan, but once i went into his office and "mr. blue sky" was playing, so apparently he can rock it. to an extent.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Fucking Matthews. So, no....

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Just the ambient hum of fluorescent lights and the glossolalia of mangled corporate language. "Language", by the way, was used as a verb in an e-mail I received today.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I work in a library, so for the most part I listen to quiet music.
Although I find that tech house and scape type dub go over pretty well too.

This week I got:

Smallville -Tobias Thomas
music out of place - Staubgold comp
Kind of blue - Miles Davis
Cirque - Biosphere
Atomic Dancefloor - D.Diggler

And a comp of compost/herbert/ axelrod/spacek/roxy music type of funky stuff I made last night

hector (hector), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Generally it's me and Billy who pick, so yes!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

We don't listen to jack shit at work. But it's better to have silence than to have my fucking coworkers playing a bunch of folkshit or Xtian "rock." Fucking A.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, since i'm usually in my "home office." i'm listening to black cat bones right now. it's blowing my mind.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of Stereolab and DJ Shadow.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now I'm contemplating stabbing my eyes out with a letter opener to the soothing sounds of a Muzak "Wind Beneath My Wings."

Ben Boyer, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Now we've moved on to some Candy Dulfer... Something from "Saxuality," I think...

Ben Boyer, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Super '60s and '70s" station (one slogan: "Some radio stations play songs that are too new! Not cool!") at the mailroom I work at is the sort of thing I cannot stop marvelling at. It was the conduit that led me to discover that the Raspberries' "Go All the Way" is one of the ten best pop songs ever and that the Monkees are fantastic, and it every so often deigns to play Barry White, Badfinger, the O'Jays and ? and the Mysterians, therefore making it more rock/R&B integrated than any other major megawatt corporate station in town except the Top 40 one. On the other hand:

1) "American Pie" three times daily!
2) Eight-minute commercial blocks!
3) "Spirit in the Sky"! No! Help!
4) The aforementioned rock/pop/R&B integration very often means Sly & the Family Stone followed immediately by Bread.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The bright side: NO PHIL COLLINS

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

No Phil Collins!? How do you abide? Really, the highlight of my workday is if I can get them to flip to 104.1 so I might be able to catch in the air tonight (or i can't dance! a rare treat!).

Dan I., Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i try. sometimes it works. the other day kutmasta kurt came in to borrow some stuff. i was bumping working class man by jimmy barnes at the time. i'm pretty sure he was impressed.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I work in a library, so for the most part I listen to quiet music.

I work in a library too, but far enough away from the public that I usually get away happily with louder things. Hell, I've played Einsturzende there before.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No. We don't listen to music at all. Nothing. On occasion, I'll listen to a couple of MP3s at the end of the night, but that's a rare, rare occurence.
We do however watch an inordinate amount of television.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, ned: einsturzende. no way i could get away with it (i work in a library too!) i'm gonna try Acid Mothers Temple...see if i get a response.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

wow neubauten never even thought about bringing that to work. I sit alone at the reference desk though probably would not go over too well if I brought in the banging stuff.
although I have brought in Outhud and jammed a bit before people came in.

hector (hector), Thursday, 7 August 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Playlist for the bookstore tonight:

Charlie Parker (two albums), Cesaria Evora (live), Myriam Makeba, the Rough Guide to Ska, Light in Saba ... almost makes it worth 7.50/hr.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yesterday I was treated to a whole-office rendition (dance moves and everything) of the Fast Food Song. Draw yr own conclusions.

person#0 (person#0), Thursday, 7 August 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

at one of my workplaces we listen to Solid Gold FM, which is pretty good as far as radio stations go. they play chart rock and pop mostly from the 60s and 70s, lots of fleetwood mac and stones type stuff. they also play the occasional 80s elton john or foreigner track. i sit in the office and sing along most of the time except for when i have a cold like right now.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 7 August 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they listen to cool music where I work?

Hahahahahaha! Hahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahaha! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

No.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 7 August 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I sit next to the CD player so I control that motherfucker... except someone has got in before me and the Tomb Raider soundtrack is poisoning my ears. This is an unbeliveably bad song on at the moment. What the FUCK is it? 'You Can't Look Away' by Sloth according to the sleeve. Truly awful. Heavy Foreigner influence I rekkons.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 7 August 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Sloth? What a dreadful name for a band!

Being in a call centre we don't have any music playing. However being a quality assessor for directory enquiry calls means I can keep my cans on listening to appalling calls and tune into the occasional digital station through Media Player. All CD drives are disabled though, which is a shame.

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the people I work with listen to alright stuff - with the occasional Sarah McLaughlin or Creed tossed in .. But it could be worse. Most of 'em at least listen to non-mainstream music - so at least it isn't repetitive.

(So many library folks here... I work for a non-profit company that support libraries..)

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 August 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

My headphones make me happy. I do alot of database and reporting grunt work, which is generally very tedious and repetitive, without the headphones I cannot concentrate and get things done.

earlnash, Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i am forced to listen to horrible christian soft rock. please shoot me in the face. right now i am hearing lyrics about holding out for jesus! does that sound creepy to anyone else?

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No. There is a woman who listens to a radio station that seems to play Norah Jones. Constantly. Or maybe that's just the only thing I recognize.

Honestly, I wouldn't listen to music at work if they let me (which they probably would if I badgered them). Music is too interesting, and I seriously wouldn't get anything done.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

We don't have music at work. We have telephones and air vent hum. We have been assimilated.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

most of the time no, but occasionally myself and another colleague (a noted reggae writer) hijack the stereo and get down with the pirates (found a wicked soca one the other day)...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Was cranking Tom Waits' Blood Money earlier before anyone came in and now am more calmly enjoying the Walkabouts' Airmail. Mmm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

music played out loud is not allowed here. besides, regular radio will not play in this building. no reception. But the women in my dept play Dan Fogelberg on their headphones most of the time.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

here are the things i have heard today while walking past my co workers desk.

sarah the accountant really likes david bowie & sometimes listens to the velvet underground's white light white heat.
the girl who has the cubicle next to me listens to nico every day and i try to convince her that nico made her kids become junkies but it hasn't worked successfully. i blame this on a certain movie i loathe.
some really bad ska that the file room boy listens to every day, i even loaned him a !!! tape i made in hopes, but it hasn't worked either.
my 40 something boss who looks like he would be a gay bear recently discovered badly drawn boy and insists on trying to get me to talk about badly drawn boy every minute he is around me because i guess that is what he assumes i like even though i don't. i guess i'm a tad annoyed by it.

i can listen to whatever i want. i guess it could be better, and it could be worse.

mallory bourgeois (painter man), Thursday, 7 August 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Here at Wernham Hogg, we listen to the boss strum tunes like "Free Love on the Freelove Freeway" and his tribute to Princess Diana.

Ben Boyer, Thursday, 7 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

At the library it depends on where and when I'm working. In the office during the week no music, but on the weekends my boss likes to play 38 Special and Lynard Skynard. When I'm at the circulation desk no music :(. When I'm in A/V Its usually The Byrds/John Fahey/ Fleetwood Mac. I wonder what they'd think if I threw on Borbetomagus???
At my other job, some fucker downloaded napster and from then on we haven't been allowed to listen to music on the computers. People generally listened to Top 40 or Rap or whatever hip indie band Punk Planet had on the cover. I could listen to whatever I wanted. Usually it was something loud and repetative so I could stay awake. Gate and Merzbow would scare people away. Several People asked about PG Six but I doubt they went out and bought his cd.

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The boy next to my giant desk plays Monster Ballads, "In Your Eyes" and a random selection of awesome 80s synth pop all day. He's my hero, fuck yes that music is great. My own collection, which I put on when he is not djing, is like Pulp and Outkast so that's awesome too. The downside is when the boy in the office adjacent to me puts on the fucking Chicago soundtrack at top volume, and I can no longer hear "Heaven" because "All That Jazz" is too loud, wtf.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

when i am in, we listen to cool music. the boss lets me do it, though he hates a lot of what i like. if it was up to him, we'd be listening to bob dylan, elvis costello, and yuppie-pop all day.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)
