I'm off to see him play in Edinburgh on Monday. Anyone seen him before? What can I expect? The last 2 albums are patchy + the live in Japan thing that I got with the last one is pretty great si I'm excited but not overly so.

neil, Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw him play a show a couple weeks ago in the tdot.
wow – i had no idea a human could play bass like that. watch for him triggering samples with his bass too.
he teased us the whole show with the riff from "come on my selector" and gave us a 10 minute redition for the encore. yay.
and it got really, really, really loud. you might want to bring ear plugs.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I just saw him in L.A. a few weeks ago... he was amazing. Probably the best bass player I've ever seen in my life. But the experience was a bit soured by the THREE HOUR opening set by Luke Vibert (who was fine, but three hours?!).

Ben Boyer, Thursday, 7 August 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

luke (thank god) wasn't opening for him up here – but i think i might have to deal with him opening for plaid.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

On the U.K. leg of my recent vacation I stayed with one of the co-founders of Spy Mania and I got to hear this unreleased cassette that Tom Jenkinson did back in 1992-3 (I know I know this sounds like fucking Losing My Edge bite me). Anyway, it was all techno-y and pre d'n'b and sounded fantastic.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Plaid are touring again?

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 7 August 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Plaid live sucks. I've never seen SQP out. Kinda disappointed about that but eh.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 7 August 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the last show in Seattle, and it was quite fun. Jenkinson is like a cross between Christopher Walken and Sonic Boom.. there's that maddening I'm-gonna-snap-at-any-moment mixed with lost-in-the-machinery vibe that made his show quite entertaining. He often turns down his own music and yells "CAHM AWWWWWWN!" to the crowd as some sort of attempt to pump himself up. Aside from a little much bass wankery (as blindingly good as it was), I really had a lot of fun at the show... and Vibert was playing a lot of great aggro-rasta shit beforehand too.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

plaid was okay enough live the last time i saw them. okay enough to see again.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 8 August 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen Plaid live a couple of times, and they're been fantastic both times - Once at Brixton and once at the Barbican

actionjackson, Friday, 8 August 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Prerequisite for pre-Squarepusher evening is Puzahki's 'The Kids Love Squarepusher' at http://puzahki.sevcom.com/music.htm

CNWB, Friday, 8 August 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Plaid have been great live before, saw em at Warp Lighthouse party a couple of years back - i remember being blown away by 'Squance' especially

stevem (blueski), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen Plaid a number of times and they range from two blokes standing there stroking PowerBooks before a largely disinterested audience to complete bass-heavy robofunk bleepr0x0r!

I have no idea what you should expect from Jenkinson. Depends what the new stuff is like (okay, it's probably drill'n'cliche, but he might surprise).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 8 August 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Squance" is the best song Plaid have ever made tho.

Squarepusher is good fun live, but I second the "it's gonna be fucking loud" warning...and if you can dance to his whole set, you get a special prize!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Plaid, and this may be an ignorant question, but what does the live show consist of besides dj'ing their own records? Are there any real-time elements to it?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

when i saw them it consisted of a 2 guys operating giant mixer/something and a robotic arm with 4 video cameras mounted on it centred over the mixer zooming in and out on them and the croud – with the images being projected on a screen behind them.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen Plaid a number of times and they range from two blokes standing there stroking PowerBooks before a largely disinterested audience to complete bass-heavy robofunk bleepr0x0r!

exactly! i think the disinterested audience thing comes from promoters or whoever booking them in unsuitable venues. it's not a rock show...

disco stu (disco stu), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Plaid open for Squarepusher last year. I like Plaid's music a lot more than Squarepusher but they were pretty boring to watch. Squarepusher was fun as hell but I couldn't stay for the whole set because it got kind of tedious. This was like his first US tour and no-one really knew what to do during his set; there was definitely no dancing, kind of just a lot of people standing and staring at the stage. The lights were kind of bright too so the atmosphere was weird. But watching him swig vodka straight out of the bottle was fun.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i danced.
– he went through the trouble of actually showing up this time, so how could i not.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 8 August 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

that Puzahki thing is fucking brilliant and he is clearly our new God

stevem (blueski), Friday, 8 August 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Gull, Saturday, 23 August 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Who cares about Squarepusher anymore he makes really mediocre albums these days.

Plaid on the other hand are awesome in every way! Can't wait to see them live again!

Too widdly. Is it not just an act he's endorsing, or possibly producing?

rhythm fixated member (chap), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 11:48 (fifteen years ago)

Apparently it really is him, just a pseudonym. He released a single under the same name on Ed Banger last month. I think its awful, the last thing Jenkinson needs to do right now is some whack Ratatat tribute shit.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 11:54 (fifteen years ago)

I liked Hello Everything quite a bit, he should do more jolly breakbeaty stuff like that. I've never been particularly into the jazz-funk side of his work.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

Having said that, this album description is pretty good:

Just a Souvenir is an album by Squarepusher, which was released to the general listening public on October 27, 2008. The album was made available to purchase as a download from bleep.com on September 15, 2008.[1]

The album's genesis came from a daydream, in which Tom Jenkinson envisioned a rock band performing a concert against the backdrop of a large, glowing coathanger. The performance quickly became surreal: among other things, a river forces the band to kayak whilst performing; the guitarist is able to accelerate or decelerate time at will; and every drum in the drummer's kit begins to switch places with one another.[2] As such, the majority of the album consists of Jenkinson's own version of jazz fusion, threaded through with classical guitar, math rock and funk recordings.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 11:58 (fifteen years ago)

Am I listening to the same thing as everyone else? I don't hear any widdlyness or Ratatat or jazz or breakbeat - more epic horror kinda goth/new wave stuff. I hope I was listening to the right thing and not Tim Exile or something.

Yes, a fair bit.

I like the Shobaleader One single, but the Mr Oizo mix was best.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 22 October 2010 09:12 (fifteen years ago)

I am still trying to get my head around the Shobaleader thing. Every time I hear it, halfway through I keep expecting to go somewhere, and it doesn't, so I really just want to take it off and put on Chrome Hoof instead.

A brownish area with points (chap), Friday, 22 October 2010 09:51 (fifteen years ago)

if you ever get to see him in an improv / jazz situation dooo it. it's fucking cool when he starts playing some wacky squarepusher bass shit in that context. i think pretty much everything he does is worth a listen just not always worth revisiting.

Crackle Box, Friday, 22 October 2010 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

I've never been into his jazz improv stuff. If I wanted to listen to something like that I'd seek out people who've dedicated their careers to it, not a moonlighting IDM producer.

A brownish area with points (chap), Friday, 22 October 2010 13:20 (fifteen years ago)

tbf he has been doing the jazz improv thing quite heavily for most of his career, or at least since Music Is Rotted One Note, which was 98? 97? That said I know what you mean because a lot of it is tributary rather than truly innovative.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 22 October 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

a lot of it is tributary rather than truly innovative.

You put it better than I did.

A brownish area with points (chap), Friday, 22 October 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

Then again, while a lot of it might be trying to channel Bitches Brew through a bunch of warped-out synths, the man knows his jazz and is a remarkable bassist and drummer, so it's maybe doing him a disservice to slate a good 50% of his career as "Switched On Miles" or something. Especially when every so often he comes out with a "My Sound" or a "Underwatertorch" or a "Iambic 5 Poetry", all of which are very beautiful with hardly anything ostensibly electronic.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 22 October 2010 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

the first single didn't really do much for me at first, but once I got into the whole album I really like it. My impression is that it's a bit of a throwback in some ways but there are moves in the production that he absolutely could not have done in the past. I think he's a total genius who has always made very sophisticated music.

Jonk Raven (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 February 2026 16:35 (two months ago)

Sick track and video, this is maybe the most Tortoise he's ever been. Love how the drum machine beat gets gradually faded down in the mix.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 February 2026 16:48 (two months ago)

Live/acoustic instrumentation is back? Felt like he deliberately eschewed that on the last few records.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 26 February 2026 18:26 (two months ago)

"Kammer" translates to "Chamber" so indeed I think this might be more stripped back and acoustic

imago, Thursday, 26 February 2026 18:46 (two months ago)

same here thanks to the recent reissue. it strikes me now it's Tom at his most Zappa, mainly due to the collage-like nature of it and the fact that it blurs the line between studio and live, main difference is Tom shuts the fuck up

frogbs, Thursday, 26 February 2026 18:53 (two months ago)

I still remember throwing that album onto my iPod knowing nothing about Squarepusher...I was going through an Aphex Twin phase at the time and he often got brought up as a similar artist. forgot it was on there until "Tetra-sync" came up on shuffle, I think I was playing Gamecube F-Zero while it was hooked up to the stereo so I didn't know what it was while it was playing only that it was the greatest shit I'd ever heard in that moment. that night I downloaded his entire catalogue off Soulseek

Feeling this one as well. Generally enjoy Squarepusher but when a new one rolls round I get a daunting feeling that I'm going to get exhausted by it. This feels like he's really pushing out with a different sound rather than choosing a point on the existing jazz-breaks spectrum he usually operates in.

hyping myself up for this by playing Ultravisitor thanks to the lovely reissue. I know a lot of people dug it back then but I remember this consensus of like "too much showing off"...maybe '04 was just not the right time for this. listening now all I can hear is how advanced it is. since I think this new one might be his Jazz From Hell I'll say this is his Sheik Yerbouti. a broad mix of stuff, some live some studio, all blended together into one weird package, full of "are you fucking kidding me" moments though obviously for much different reasons. maybe it hits different removed from the era when you realize just how unique a musician he is, not just in talent but his willingness to outwork everyone else

frogbs, Tuesday, 31 March 2026 03:05 (one month ago)

it's really well respected but for me it's went from yumming-up everything he released to feeling like i'd finally hit a wall

Jonk Raven (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 March 2026 09:46 (one month ago)

to me all of his albums feel like a hodgepodge of amazing moments, low key gems, and truly impressive-sounding stuff that just doesn’t stick, but is admirable up until you are fatigued by its aggressiveness and/or relentlessly dour mood

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 31 March 2026 15:11 (one month ago)

yes i agree. it's like... i could compile a couple of absolutely world beating compilations that would be easier to navigate end-to-end than most of his studio albums. It's just that his output is so bumpy - none of it is BAD, I just don't find myself in the mood to have to overcome wild mood swings they present

Jonk Raven (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 March 2026 16:32 (one month ago)

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 31 March 2026 18:08 (one month ago)

K7 is probably my least favorite so far. K9 has a Warner Bros cartoon quality that's fun, and I really like the purely orchestral tracks. I wonder if this will ever get performed by an orchestra, or if he'll get any film scoring gigs out of it.

Would love to see him playing drums, has this ever been witnessed?

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 April 2026 19:09 (two weeks ago)

any idea on how he made it? did he play live instruments and record them? how much of what sounds love is synthesized?

flopson, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 16:30 (two weeks ago)

I think it's all sequenced/programmed using virtual instruments except for the drums and bass (which I assume are both played by him), from what I can glean and how it sounds to me.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 15 April 2026 17:05 (two weeks ago)
