i doubt that

ron (ron), Friday, 8 August 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i kinda shamefully like body rock though....its nice to see somebody reppin for late 90s underground!!!

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 8 August 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

trife why didn't you deliver a logistical beatdown over on the albums thread?

or is it because rap is not an album art form?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 8 August 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

my wife is scornful:
"why didn't you put 'o.p.p.'?"
that's a good question

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

diamond i dont really wanna fuck with that albums thread that shit makes me angry.....also that other retarded one where dude is tryin to get into rap and hes feelin realness like cnn and dmx and then ilm 'heads' are like 'avoid that crap, peep this def jux bullshit and early 90s boring ass jazz rap'

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 8 August 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

like apparently hiphop is just late 80s/early 90s album-oriented 'golden age' shit and then a couple huge overplayed ryan pfork rap singles each year from the past two years.....especially if timb produced them, check it his beats is like idm!!!!!

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 8 August 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

one thing about braggin writes is that i tend to like songs where the mc's rap without breaks, see also L.L.'s 'the breakthrough', or 'microphone fiend'.
. i also like that it's just rocking the annette peacock records back and forth, compare to pacewon "i declare war" (pete moore 'shady blues'). there aren't too many records that are up to being used on their own like that.

but anyways ok i know you hate it

ron (ron), Friday, 8 August 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I seriously thought hard about putting "Simon Says" on my list, but I chickened out.

Also, Blount are you watching your boy Mike Vick on ESPN right now?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 8 August 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

blount i was jsut fuckin with you but when theres scenario remix out there its a weird choice, joints and jams is funny and cute and i do like it better than the scenario o.g. version...im biased though i just got that record after i was into elephunk ( review in flagpole soon!!!)

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 8 August 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCK - did I miss the falcons nfl yearbook?

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 8 August 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife it has Barry Manilow horns! "I Need A Hot Girl" is great though, but maybe because it's later on in the album I don't love it quite so much (my attention starts to flag after a while!). Unsurprisingly I also love "Respect My Mind" --> right near the beginning.

Fuck it, most of these lists are great but I'm just going to choose the best 20 singles that nobody else has mentioned yet. This narrows shit down a lot, but haters can floss with my pubic hairs. In chronological order:

1) Fatback Band, "King Tim III (Personality Jock)"
2) Grandmaster Caz, "Wildstyle Subway Rap 2"*
3) Rockmaster Scott and the Dynamic Three, "The Roof is On Fire"
4) Whodini, "Five Minutes of Funk"
5) BDP, "South Bronx"
6) The Dismasters, "Small Time Hustler"
7) The D.O.C., "It's Funky Enough"
8) Divine Styler, "Ain't Sayin' Nothin'"
9) Ice Cube, "It Was A Good Day"
10) Dr. Dre, "Keep Their Heads Ringin'"
11) Nine, "Whutcha Want"
12) Tha Alkaholiks, "DAAAM!"
13) Crucial Conflict, "Hay"
14) Company Flow, "Vital Nerve"
15) Jay-Z, "Nigga What, Nigga Who"
16) Eminem, "Any Man"
17) Del the Funky Homosapien, "Phoney Phranchise (Domino Remix)"
18) Blackalicious, "Make You Feel That Way"
19) Mr. Lif, "Return of the B-Boy"
20) Nas, "Made You Look"

*was this actually released as a single? If not, then I pick Jimmy Spicer's "Money (Dollar Bill Y'all)".

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 8 August 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(trife: The Diplomats' third part ''Bout It, 'Bout It' thing was the first single from Diplomatic Immunity, but released a year before the album. It had a really cool video with Master P hanging out in New York and the sunny overexposed bright ghetto, people riding around on bikes, Spanish girls with shorts, spinning cameras thing.)

Choppa - 'Choppa Style'
Nelly - 'Country Grammar'
Puff Daddy - 'I'll Be Missing You'
504 Boyz - 'Tight Whips'
TLC - 'Waterfalls'
Field Mob - 'All I Know'
Baby ft. Clipse - 'What Happened to that Boy'
Lil Flip - 'The Way We Ball'
Big Tymers - 'Still Fly'
Ja Rule, Ashanti, Vita, Charli Baltimore - 'Down 4 U'
Notorious B.I.G. - 'Juicy'
Boo and Gotti - 'Ain't It Man'
Buck 65 - 'Pants On Fire'
Lil Jon - 'Put Yo Hood Up'
R Kelly - 'Ignition (Remix)'
Lil Wayne - 'Shine'
Destiny's Child - 'Bootylicious'

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 9 August 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I got Buck 65 right away. It's like, all those guys in New York are, like, pretending that--- I don't know. But all of those New York guys on Anticon pretend to like rap music. They like Gangstarr, etc. And they know all the slang. They read The Source. Right? But Buck 65 is a million times more (whatever word). (I can't say 'authentic.') He raps about winning the 1993 Nova Scotia Provincial Championships in baseball (and it's mentioned in every review ['He raps about things that black people don't rap about! Do you see?']) but he means it and he's not some hoodie-wearing, Source-reading NYU guy. He's just some geeky Canadian guy--- and even though that's supposed to be the joke, it works for me, I guess. I think what I mean is, unlike, like, Aesop Rock or someone that you'd want to hear with a Just Blaze beat (but pick a better MC, I guess), he's so divorced from rap music. He's not like a smartenized version of the real thing, for NYU people to listen to. ---- And, even though people say stupid things about him, 'He can use a turntable! He is keeping the old ways alive! 50 Cent's probably never used a turntable in his life!' But, um ---- it's like when I used to read about obscure hip-hop in little blurbs in Spin and it would be like, 'This guy is crazy. He recorded it all with a fourtrack whatever and a solar panel and it's like you're hearing the truth about life' but then you got it off Napster and it was so, so boring and bad. But Buck 65 is all mumbly and he's not kidding and he doesn't care about The Source---- It's not a he-is-doing-it-the-right-way-unlike-the-people-who-sell-lots-of-records kind of thing, because. Anyways, he's cool. It's hard to like at first because he sounds retarded and you always read a bunch of reviews about how he is like William S. Burrough and he's good at baseball.

(I didn't add any breaks because I wanted to have two paragraphs. When that paragraph started to run on and on I worried about it. I've forgotten what the second paragraph is even supposed to be about.)

I was going to say 'Mo Money, Mo Problems' but I couldn't remember exactly who did it and who it was featuring and everything. But 'I'll Be Missing You' is more better because of a bunch of reasons but it's just more important to me.
