I have money burning holes in my pocket.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 August 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah probably Ronan, I've not got it yet myself (in fact I might go and buy it this lunchtime) - there's a new compilation advertised all over the tube called "Ride Da Riddims" which seems to be The Best Dancehall Cash-In In The World...Ever - if that's not just a UK release you might want to look at that too.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 August 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool I'll have a look, the joys of a new job in the city.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 August 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's worth the admission price for 'Like Glue' alone.

Steve Tyler, Friday, 8 August 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a decent album, doesn't all live up to the singles and is overlong definitely good to have. Especially in this weather.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 August 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say more than 2/3rds is great, which is a fucking good average for a pop album. The last Elephant Man album is even better and even more consistent, but probably ain't as good a first buy. The Wayne Wonder album is also very good but tapers off a bit towards the end.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 8 August 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah didn't quite have time to check in the end. Maybe after work in the 5-6 rush. I loved No Letting Go also, so much so I even bought the single, so maybe Wayne Wonder might be good too. That comp also looks good though it may not have reached Dublin yet.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 August 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say more than 2/3rds is great, which is a fucking good average for a pop album

I agree with this assessment, and especially considering that it's a pretty long album (like 20 songs), that means there's at least 40 minutes of solid material. I'd say if you like the singles, then go for it.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(Plus most of the questionable stuff is tacked on at the end, so it's easy to skip.)

o. nate (onate), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd ask someone to burn me all the singles, the Neptunes one and the Busta Rhymes remix, and buy Ragga Ragga Ragga 2003 (Greensleeves) instead. Every song is a stunna and it compiles the newest riddims and is a great showcase of the Indian influence vs. teh Electro squelchy stuff.

sean g, Friday, 8 August 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Buy Sizzla's "Da Real Thing" instead. Or, on the other hand, but something like one of the "Reggae Gold" comps. Sean Paul's record is a great commercial success, and this means you'll get to hear as much as you need on the radio. I, however, adore "Punkie."

cybele (cybele), Friday, 8 August 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Neptunes track on Dutty Rock is the weakest one I think.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 8 August 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The Reggae Gold comps are weak as hell. They always have a couple of great tracks, but they're inconsistent, watery, and mostly just boring. And the bonus CD on the 2002 one was all the same songs as on the first CD, in different order, badly mixed. I'd suggest the DJ Kast One Reggae Bashment mixtapes, but I don't know if you can get those in the UK/Ireland.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Friday, 8 August 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, have you seen the "Garage Rap" compilation around Dublin at all? Seems to be no up to date garage comps in the city whatsoever. The Dizzee album is in though!

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan, buy it coz it's good pop dancehall - if you have more money to throw around, try to get a copy of greensleeves' ragga ragga ragga 2003 compilation, too - it's got elephant man's fuck you sign, ward 21's petro (so you can her why i've been raving abt them) and vybz kartel's sweet to the belly on it (a big fave of mine and tim f's) plus some other the most gratuitous and unnecessary pictures of ladies arses i've ever seen on the sleeve, plus the ward 21's u know how we roll is totally fab if you can get a hold of it...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan Reggae 2003 may be rubbish (I dont know) but Soca 2003 is champion and has the arses factor well covered too.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I got the Ride the Riddim thing, it's very good, the bus home took an hour so I got a good impression. Thanks for the tip, yeah the arse cover was a bit funny, I felt like I was buying porn. I put it on the counter face down.

Rhyme by Ward 21 is on it Dave btw. So far I'm loving Clappin' by Capleton and the David's House Crew and Wine Your Waist by Red Rat.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Chaka Demus and Pliers.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That's on the CD Chris.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the new Lilt advert.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

where did you get that cd ronan?
i haven't really seen any dancehall cds in dublin, other than sean paul

btw in selectah records they have dancehall mixtapes (actual cassette tapes) for fairly cheap,i got one that seems quite good but its just by a guy from dublin, they had others from jamaica which i must look into when i get the money

robin (robin), Friday, 8 August 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a big commercial cd really robin, got it in hmv, the second disc has alot of old pop ones like boombastic and stuff but it still seems a really good cd.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 August 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry sorry sorry...when I said Reggae Gold, I had in mind the Ragga Ragga Ragga series...I just had VP in my head.

cybele (cybele), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I got Soca 2003 this lunchtime for my tit and bum cover needs. Only one of the cheapo shops had Ride The Riddims. A price war is apparently brewing on Brewer Street (ho ho) according to an overheard counter conversation.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 August 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

have anyoned heard taht song row like a bosat by beeniw man? its so happy

sean g, Friday, 8 August 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Row Like A Boat" is fantastic! Songs about dances are always brilliant.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 9 August 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I just postponed getting in the shower for a few minutes to come up here and post that I am TOTALLY blown away by the whole Ride Da Riddims CD, reckon I'll be buying alot more of the recommendations here.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 9 August 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't get Sean Paul. You'd be better off getting the album of Michael Sembello b-sides.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan I have now got the Sean Paul album. It's good.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea what Marcello was on when he said the last Beenie Man was much better than Dutty Rock - that has to be the most mentalist thing I've heard in ages (and Marcello's usually pretty reliable). In my opinion Tropical Storm was pretty disappointing, with quite a few tracks seeming like a deliberate "how to fuck up fusing ragga with urban for dummies" guide (oh no! Irv Gotti! OH NO!). Whereas Dutty Rock is great!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 9 August 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

irv gotti > rahzel

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 9 August 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife, have you *heard* the Beenie Man track I'm talking about? It's definitely Gotti at his worst (and you *know* I've got mad love for primo Gotti! "I'm Real (Remix)", "Livin' It Up", "Can I Get A..." etc. etc.).

And Rahzel is only a slight nuisance on that Sean Paul track.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 9 August 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, more support for dutty rock - a tape of it minus the skits hasn't been too far from my walkmen in the past few months.

(tho I'm hoping the cash-in dancehall comp tom linked to gets released here, + tim's made me curious about the elephant man even if I have to pay nosebleed import prices download & burn at my ex-flatmate's lair)

etc, Sunday, 10 August 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

stop moaniing and listen to ruff squad instead

sean g, Sunday, 10 August 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ragga! Ragga! Ragga! comp looks excellent, and even Reggae Gold 2003 looks pretty good as a general overview - "Get Busy"! "No Letting Go"! "Pon Di River Pon Di Banks"! "Row Like A Boat"!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 10 August 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ragga Ragga Ragga 2003 is my album of the year (and it IS an album). Tim, Usher ft. Elephant Man coming soon. Will be huge.

sean g, Sunday, 10 August 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you heard Sanchez doing Usher's "You got it bad"? He also does Brian McKnight's "Back at One."

cybele (cybele), Sunday, 10 August 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Neptunes track on Dutty Rock is the weakest one I think

I kind of agreed with this at first, but the song has grown on me since then. I like the way that it finds a solid groove without using drums. I think if you skip the skits, "Ganja Breed", "Concrete", and the last three songs, you have a pretty solid 50 minute album.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 18 August 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

No! "Concrete" is great! Surely you'd get rid of one of the versions of "Punkie"???

Also I am increasingly of the opinion that the Surprise Riddim is way overrated, so "Shake That Thing" is starting to annoy me (plus the chorus melody is kinda sickly sounding).

I can't believe that the US version of the album doesn't have "Samfy I" - amazing track!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely you'd get rid of one of the versions of "Punkie"???

The Spanish one is one of the last 3 songs, which I already put the kibosh on. I like "Shake That Thing". "Concrete" is a bit grating - he rhymes "design" with "design", contributing to the song's general aura of half-assedness.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
Wondering what the expertz think of the reissued Sean Paul rec that drops a song and all the skits....

djdee2005, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It adds "Baby Boy" to the tracklist as well.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like an improvement to me. The original is way too long and the skits are pretty tiresome after the first listen.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, that's really weird, because they left on the whole ridiculously long "Dutty Rock Intro", which is just awful and I always skip. But this is one album where I actually thought the skits were humorous and broke up the album in an ok way (there are only like two or three of them anyway). The "police skit" is funny stuff!

Basically it looks like dropping a couple skits and adding "Baby Boy". Whatever.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

And it drops "It's On"

djdee2005, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The police skit s'okay. I don't remember "It's On" (which is usually not a good sign.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)
