God, I didn't think it could get any worse....50 is tedious, vain, lazy, admittadly charismatic, but Jesus Christ this worship of him is getting out of control

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have figured out why 50 Cent irritates me:

HE IS THE NEW MA$E.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I blame Greil Marcus.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I blame you.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

or possibly us.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I blame HStencil and Rodney Dangerfield, as well.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

And Horace Mann for good measure.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Fabolous was the new Ma$e. I think 50 is the new Eazy-E....both are extremely smug, have a very high opinion of themselves vs. actual rhyming talent ratio, both have unique and somewhat endearing voices and vocal mannerisms, and both got a big leg up from some great Dr. Dre production....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

both also had cred galore

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it's overblown
but look at the charts again
and think about it

panjabi mc:

whoever wrote this
is a genius on the words
whatta freakin' stud)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto to that

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Fabolous and 50 Cent are two sides of the same coin; Fabolous is the interesting side, 50 Cent is the irritating side.

(This may be a roundabout way of saying that despite being tired of them I still like The Neptunes more than Dr. Dre.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 August 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

its all because white people love gangsta rap.

notice gangsta was out for awhile, and all of a sudden 50 cent's record comes out and the media totally exploded. HES BEEN SHOT NINE TIMES PEOPLE! NINE TIMES! WHO CARES IF HE SOUNDS LIKE MA$E?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

50 Cent sounds like Mase but tough. This isn't a revelation, and it isn't a bad thing. And plus 50 has better beats and better collaborators.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the simple presence
of massive chart success
does not indicate

a phenomenon
that says anything profound
about america

it could simply be
that 50 cent is blessed with
a strong rhythmic sense

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

sure, I take your point
but he's certainly a meme
why not explore that?

do you say that you
only hear the tunes and don't
think about the man?

(and just so you know
let me just repeat again:
'yeah it's overblown')

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

if it weren't for tunes
(and flow, lest it be forgot)
who would think of the man?

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

if he drove a hyundai
would you still love him?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh, better beats? there's like 2 songs on his record with good beats (IMO..."What Up Gangsta" and "Poor Lil Rich").

Fabolous is a good lyricist but he has zero vocal presence or inflection, which is the one thing 50 has in spades.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

plus he's got the magic stick

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it too much to hope that someone beats him to death with the magic stick?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Good beats: "In Da Club," "Patiently Waiting," "Wanksta," "Many Men," "If I Can't," a bunch of others I can't remember right now. How many good Mase beats can you name?

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the only time I
think his thing completely works:
'21 questions'

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

but guys.... he got shot 9 TIMES!

astroblaster (astroblaster), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan's fecundity
Has now produced an image
Worthy of Burroughs:

50 cent being beat
With his own magic phallus
To a bloody pulp

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

name someone else with six singles on the charts right now

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

SIX

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

NINE TIMES!

astroblaster (astroblaster), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think at one point
The Starlite Vocal Band had
Twelve songs in the charts!

(NB: I am lying)

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I FUCKING LOATHE THE "WANKSTA" BEAT. I DON'T THINK THERE IS A MORE APTLY-NAMED BEAT IN EXISTENCE AS THAT BEAT IS COMPLETE AND UTTER WANK.

Also, why should I give a fuck if he's got six singles on the charts if I only halfway like one of them ("In Da Club")? QUALITY NOT QUANTITY </cliche>

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't like "Many Men"?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this mean the new Rebirth Brass Band dvd will go platinum? One of their snare drums got shot and played the gig the next night. HE HADN'T TAKEN THE BULLET OUT YET. He did it himself the next day. WITH A KNIFE.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a fine line between "tough" and "inexpressive" and I think 50 falls on the wrong side of that line. However, I like some of the remixes of his songs that feature guest vocalists who are actually interesting to listen to, like "Dem Nah Ready" (with Sean Paul) or "P.I.M.P." (Snoop Dogg).

o. nate (onate), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

hatas the lot of you!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"If I Can't" is an OK beat but "Many Men" is awful...typical NYC piano loop hardcore etc. done really poorly.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I FUCKING LOATHE THE "WANKSTA" BEAT.

Hey, I'm not alone! DaNed hivemind working again (including relative worth of all songs, ie "In Da Club" half works and beyond that I go to sleep...).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, snare drummers that is. Although that would be a bad-ass snare drum.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ you guys are brave - this guys sells loads of records, so you know Trife is gonna come in here and deliver a v. heavy beatdown any minute now

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ you guys are brave - this guy sells loads of records, so you know Trife is gonna come in here and deliver a v. heavy beatdown any minute now

[possible double post as I correct "guys" to "guy"]

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

you should have corrected "heavy" to "logistical"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn in Chicago "guys" would be correct.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't eminem the genius behind the sweet beats of 'wanksta'?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist that was 1) otm and 2) extremely funny

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

But hang on a second, he has a tough look and word on the street (where he spent a lot of time, btw) is that he's been shot up.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 8 August 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Beautiful. He looks so sad there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 August 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying 50's totally worthless, I even like him in small doses (but let's be honest there's been no such thing as "small doses" of 50 Cent lately)...it's just he seems to be getting worse in comparision to both "How To Rob" and a lot of his mixtape work...."I ain't even gotta try to shine" --- 50 is OTM there, fo shizzle.

Does Ma$e being on "Mo Money Mo Problems" count as him having a good beat?

Also, "Horse and Carriage" with him and Cam was pretty good....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 8 August 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Best. 50 Cent. Thread. Ever.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 8 August 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

more fool you for reading the whole article. I can't even be bothered to read all the tedious replies in this thread

Reginald Dellos Tools, Friday, 8 August 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Reginald is P Diddy to 50's Ma$e, perhaps?

ham on rye (ham on rye), Friday, 8 August 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

um, that's Eminem

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen the "Wanksta" beat attributed to Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jam Master Jay, etc. but I'm pretty sure it's none of the above. anyone know who's actually responsible for that crap?

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 9 August 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Bernie Taupin

i'm a little late. but loon is the new ma$e.

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 9 August 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I started to soften on 50 when I realized I hated his flow for the same reason I loved Bizmark's.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 9 August 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: "Damn, homie/in high school you was the man, homie" vs. "It weighed a good pound if ya tried to weigh it"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 9 August 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed, Herr Patrin, my flow is of a similar diposition to that of 50 Cent's. I thank you kindly for your compliments, Dog, and Ruff Ryders if you are reading, I await my double R platinum pendant with much excitement
