Today I was playing the Panjabi MC album and my friend was like "isn't this so funny he's rapping in funny foreign." I had to restrain myself. This guy is big into Mike Patton.

this thread has more to do with people misinterpreting the intent of the artist rather than Mr Bungle-ish "zaniness." Devo fans to thread i suppose.

yeah, there's definitely a certain kind of person who just gravitates to weirdness..I mean, I like some fairly odd music, but then there's someone like my roommate, who listens almost exclusively to 'outsider' kind of music, be it Beefheart or Ween or Wesley Willis.. i think sometimes it gets out of hand, where someone like that can't appreciate anything that isn't willfully strange or has some bizarre backstory.

Does he have bulging eyes, a weird way to furrow his brow, and a collection of extravagant feathered hats? These people can't just walk up to the counter and ask for the new Madonna, you know.

Yeah I do that. I mean like music because I think it's crazy. Maybe it's because I got a really bad education eg only stuff YOU can't understand is art but that sounds like PJ O Rourke who I just read claiming sniffily that he could never like art cos he was forced to read French post modernism in university. Also, I got the impression that British critics didn't like anything weird and only liked Stereophonics and Radiohead and stuff and I sort of respected them for that. Sort of.

I really enjoy some free-improv music for this reason. I was sitting at a performance which featured an incredible drummer/percussionist from Philly (who's name eludes me at the moment) and I was so delighted at the cartoonlike approach (and I mean that as a compliment) of the playing that I burst into laughter and cracked up throughout the set. Some "serious" fans gave me the stink eye, but I wasn't laughing "at" them, to be mean, I was laughing at them because they were awesome and hillarious. Palanch is the same way, they can really play AND they are the musical equivelent of stand up comedy.
