How lenient are you on keeping albums?

I'm at a point where I've decided that I need to purge my CD collection, and basically I'm being a bit stricter as to what I'm keeping than I've been in the past.
Some albums I've kept for years because i like f.ex. one third of the songs a lot, but NEVER listen to the albums anyways, since I have so much other stuff I love. Hence it'll go out.
And generally it's that way about stuff that I feel is alright, but I have other albums by the same band (or other bands) that do the same thing better.
It's been interesting though, I've dusted off LOTS of albums that I haven't played in a long time, I've given 'em a nice inspection. Biggest surprise so far was realizing that Melt-Banana's "Teeny shiny" is actually pretty good; I think I got put off at the time by the poppy vocals (free the bee!) but there's some really neat stuff in there.

This process is part of the reason why I started that "albums you've bought despite it obviously being a bad idea" thread recently; as I stumbled upon many albums that I honestly couldn't see why I was drawn to in the first place.
It sucks to know I've paid moneyforsay Dream Theater's "Scenes from a memory" that I could've spent on buying maybe two Archie Shepp CDs.

OK, this turned more into a mini-rant than a proper thread, but I'm curious about peoples thoughts around the general idea.
I know some people who keep everything they buy, because they figure that some day they might miss getting rid of it (and possibly because of some "Oooh man, my collection is looking big'n'hawt!" feeling)

Here's what happens. I just keep everything. (Everything. If I didn't, I would've missed the bit on 'Uriah Heep Live' where David Byron says "Chewing gum! Me boot's sticking to the stage! Awful stuff, chewing gum. Orright here's a number called 'Easy Livin'...") Until I move, then I just leave it somewhere

I reach a similar point every couple of months or so. What I do is just stick my old CDs in storage, deep in a closet. Unless you plan to sell them and really need the money, there's no reason to get rid of them if you have a little space to spare.

I've never sold CDs or albums. I doubt that I'll get enough back to make it worth my while.

I've sold quite a bit of stuff just recently in preparation for moving and needing to fit my collection in a smaller space. I basically sold things I didn't listen to, even if I did dig some of the songs. I figure: if I ever want to hear, say, "Chickenshit Conformist" again, I can download it. That way, I won't end up buying it back, listening to it once and never bothering with it again.

Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't be selling them back, but at times when it becomes a necessity, I don't feel too bad about it. Out of the probably 50 CDs I've sold back to stores in my life, I've never bought back a single one of them.

i've got lots of records i'd sell if i thought anyone'd buy them

Yeah, same thing here: I have a lot of albums that I never listen to, but want to keep for some reason. I tried selling them to my local record store, but they only offered about an euro a piece. Maybe I should try selling them individually online or just donate them to charity or something.

Right, the used stores are a complete rip-off, I'd never sell to them either.
What I do is shove them all into a closet, then run around on the internet posting sales/trade lists. That way I can get a pretty decent price for the CDs, or even do a neat trade for something I want MUCH more (f.ex. the other day I traded Mekong Delta's debut for Gentle Giant's "Out of the woods (bbc sessions)", yay!)

Of course, it's near impossible to sell some albums, so that closet is always full, it seems.
I've sold or traded away quite a few albums over the years, and frankly, the only one I ever regretted doing so with was Sleep's "Jerusalem", which I later re-purchased only to sell off again! I'll stick with Boris, thankyouverymuch.

i halved my collection over the last year. i don't miss many of them. there was a point where i didn't even know all the records i had anyway, so i pretty much just save myself some space that way.

Jack, I know exactly how you feel there...

the only one I ever regretted doing so with was Sleep's "Jerusalem", which I later re-purchased only to sell off again!

Oh come on, Jerusalem is great! Maybe not worth paying for twice, but it offers many solid hours of stoned entertainment.

Get rid of it and pick up Dopesmoker, which is ten minutes longer and mixed much heavier/louder.

W/r/t purges, I purge all the time. I wait until I've got 40 or 50 incredibly shitty pop-punk, mainstream rap, and indie-rock promos sitting in a corner of the bedroom (this usually takes about a month), and off to Kim's I go.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't sell any of my CD's, mainly because of two reasons:

1º The money they give back doesn't pay the number of songs I like on each CD.

2º I have reasons to love everyone of my CD's. Every CD I buy that I don't like, I try to sell it the next instant. If I can't, I give it to somebody. I care about every CD in my collection.
Space is really a problem, especially when you pass the 1000 mark, but you can always find a way to solve that...
...and of course, it gives a great subject for conversation... ;)
