TS: Juliana Hatfield vs. Kristen Hersh

Peers of one another in the 80's (JH: Blake Babies/KH: Throwing Muses) and in the 90's (solo careers) -- and, once again in a band setting in the 00's (JH: Blake Babies reunion in 2000, Some Girls in 2003/KH: Throwing Muses reunion in 2003). Which indiepop chanteuse has done more and better things over the last (nearly) 20 years? Which might still be doing it 20 years from now?

I can't take a side in this one (it's too hard to choose), so I'm leaving it up to you, ILM.

Hersh is a thousand times more imaginative and realized a songwriter....a less of a hateful, narcissitic whiner than La Hatfield.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Kristen Hersh because of the u-Ziq song.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Kristen every year of the century, solo, in the Muses, whatever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hersh. for the reasons alex stated, plus she's a hell of a guitar player.

The Four Singing Beatles (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

hersh. why is this even a question?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps I'm the only person who likes both? I thought this would be a tougher battle...

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hersh, but not by that big a margin. I'd say the original Throwing Muses LP is a higher high than either have produced elsewhere, but surely both of their 90's solo careers, and later Throwing Muses records have been only sporadically great?

Hmmm, where would Tanya Donelly rank?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 9 August 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It strikes me as sort've an unfair comparison, actualy, as I dare wager that Hatfield was probably a huge fan of the `Muses before she started the Blake Babies.

I just find more depth, maturity and adventurousness in Hersh's work.

It's kinda like comparing Interpol to Joy Division.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 9 August 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

not really a fair comparison, no. but who would be a fair comparison for kristin hersh?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Saturday, 9 August 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary Margaret O'Hara?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 9 August 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

chan marshall?

but why limit it to women?

The Four Singing Beatles (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 9 August 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Kristin, obviously. I like Juliana plenty, but she's not half as skilled, imaginative, daring, what have you. The Grotto is especially wonderful.

Besides, Throwing Muses would beat Blake Babies any day of the week.

Tanya Donelly gets huge points for Belly, who are the most underrated 'alternative' band out there. King is a spectacular success.

Hatfield lost her songwriting talent when she got laid

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 11 August 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

well I pick juliana but let's just say i understand why she won't get too many votes. k.h. doesn't do anything for me - i'm sure she's great and all, i just don't like her voice

ron (ron), Monday, 11 August 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps I'm the only person who likes both? I thought this would be a tougher battle...
You're not alone, Anthony. I love them both, too.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 11 August 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

not really a fair comparison, no. but who would be a fair comparison for kristin hersh? >>>>

I saw Neko Case a couple of months ago with a friend of mine (big KH fan) and she thought the two are quite similar. I'm not sure I see it, but considering their two latest releases have some smiliarity I can understand...

ham on rye (ham on rye), Monday, 11 August 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

++but who would be a fair comparison for kristin hersh?

thalia zedak or mary timony vs kristin H. would be a little better.

maybe thalia, mary, juliana vs kristin?

kephm, Monday, 11 August 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I love them both too, and may I say that I started loving Juliana some time before discovering Hersh's work. Of course, after listening to TM and KH's solo albums, I could state that Kristin is without a doubt one of the best songwriters of her time, male or female. Even so, I like Juliana's 3 first albums better than Kristin's. Throwing Muses is untouchable though.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
this is so funny. it's like was no one else bothered by the blatant mispelling of kristin's name?

Surmounter, Thursday, 22 February 2007 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

its so blaytant I barley noted it!

fandango, Thursday, 22 February 2007 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

Evan Dando vs. Frank Black
Adam Ant vs. Andy Partridge
The Donnas vs. Sleater-Kinney
Kelley Deal vs Tanya Donnelly

????

Wub-Fur Internet Radio, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

if Hatfield were ugly, no one would give a shit who she was.

Dandy Don Weiner, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

lol not true.

juliana came out with some really amazing tracks.

Surmounter, Thursday, 22 February 2007 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

anyway, totally love juliana (except later stuff pretty much sucks), but kristin wins this hands down

um...

funny, i guess it's a testament to hersh's prowess that she's currently featured on the new answers page 3 times

Surmounter, Friday, 23 February 2007 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Impossible to separate - been a fan of both since Day 1, ever since I first heard 'Everybody Loves Me...' and 'Hate My Way'. And that's 1986 for Hersh and 1992 for Juliana. Amazingly enough, Hersh's new solo record 'Learn to Sing...' is one of the best things she's done and Hatfield's 'In Exile Deo' from 2004 was probably her best ever. Alas, next year's 'Made In China' was a nadir.

Anyways, there'd be yr longevity right there...

SeekAltRoute, Sunday, 22 April 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

Eww, In Exile Deo gave me that throw up feeling in my throat, and I'm a big Juliana fan
