Killing Dido would be a good start

Reginald Dellos Tools (regtools), Sunday, 10 August 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Although if you only had one bullet and Starsailor & Stereophonics were in the same room.... hmm I suppose you'd have to kill yourself.

Reginald Dellos Tools (regtools), Sunday, 10 August 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'd do away with the Coral before anyone else on these lists

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 10 August 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

where the hell is Blu Cantrell?!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 10 August 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the Stereophonics before ANYONE else.

Despite the huge amount of crapola on the lists, it's heartening to see a fair few songs I really love there as well... I don't yet have a copy of Crazy In Love, and it's nice to know that if I turn on The Box or Radio 1 I'll probably hear it.

I think they're still pissed off at Blue for beating the cunt Williams to No 1 the week of his Knobworth gigs. HA.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 10 August 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course I meant Blu, not Blue... god, what an insult to her.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 10 August 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The playlist shows how utter shite Radio 1 is these days.
Anyone have the Capital Radio (or other commercial radio) playlist? I bet that makes R1 look like The Wire.

Ramon Duul, Sunday, 10 August 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty happy with Capital at the moment except I wish they wouldn't play "White Flag" so much.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 10 August 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Radio 1 not playlisting the #1 single is scandalous, unless it was 'fast food song' or something

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 10 August 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't have the Capital Radio plylist maybe someone else can help. But heres the Xfm playlist.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 10 August 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

How the f*^& did Elton John get playlisted on Radio 1??? Is it a dance remix?

Rodney, Sunday, 10 August 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about 'Local' Commercial Radio Stations that annoys me most is that their big selling point to listeners is that its a local station so therefore much better than the nasty national stations like R1. Yet the playlist is EXACTLY the same for each commercial radio station thats owned by the same company who owns Capital. So Radio Clydes And Forth in Scotland are the exact same as in London.
As for R1 not playlisting the no1. Not the 1st time its happened.
Iron Maiden never got played either.

Allan Marshall, Monday, 11 August 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Whats radio like in America?

Allan Marshall, Monday, 11 August 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Craig Malloy, Monday, 11 August 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently he sounds like Dave Matthews.

Craig Malloy, Monday, 11 August 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That Elton track is going to number one. God help us...

JoB (JoB), Monday, 11 August 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

JoB wins!

i don't think i could handle Capital for more than a few minutes - but there are a lot of pop tracks out at the mo that i find irresistable so as long as they minimised the boybands and Bedingfield i might actually find it no worse than XFm or Radio 1 - XFM still prioritise dreary guitar rock far too much but are otherwise very good (supporting Graffiti, LFO, AUdio Bullys etc.)

the Elton John track already came out and got in the 20s or 30s i think - but i can see a re-release taking it top ten

stevem (blueski), Monday, 11 August 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the John Mayer track sounds a lot like a Foo Fighters song only much softer

stevem (blueski), Monday, 11 August 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i think the radio 1 playlist is pretty close to being ok - it's far better than xfm's anyway...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 11 August 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

During the week [Monday - Friday] the only listenable show on Xfm is John Kennedy - the rest of the shows are utter junk on auto-pilot playlist boredom.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 11 August 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

but the only tracks XFM wouldn't play are:

Dido - 'White Flag'
Jaimeson - 'Complete'
Elton John - 'Are You Ready for Love'
D. Kay & Epsilon feat. Stamina MC - 'Barcelona'
R Kelly - 'Snake'
Lee-Cabrera feat. Alex Cartana - 'Shake It (Move A Little Closer)' (25/8)
Lemar - 'Dance (with U)'
Lumidee - 'Never Leave You (Uh-Oooh)'
Jason Nevins feat. Holly James - 'I'm In Heaven'
Sean Paul - 'Like Glue'
Kelly Rowland - 'Train On A Track'

and only a couple of those are any good - i'm not interested in hearing either The Thrills or Kelly Rowland as i find them equally dull so all in all most of these stations seem pretty evenly matched in terms of crap tunes ratio. as i said before XFM's only real problem is many of the DJs still seem to think it makes sense to play 'Teen Spirit' or 'Basket Case' all the time.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 11 August 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

half of those are good which is alot. considering some are not just good but great

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 11 August 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Elton John might just be the only artist to be played on Radio 1 in five decades (apparently his first single c.1969 was what they used to call a "turntable hit"). the man's in a position akin to that of a 56-year-old industrialist around the middle of the 19th Century; he has become the embodiment of an entirely new culture and social class, all the more culturally important for having retained some sort of relevance when his fellow travellers from the 80s have fallen off the face of the earth (no way could an obscure Clapton, Collins, Sting or Stewart track be revived like this). he is personally far more significant than his music has ever been, or ever will be; whenever the Thatcher / Blair middle-ground consensus take up a personal hero (Princess Diana) or identify with a broadcaster (Sky) which separates them from old-school Tories and old-time socialists, he is always somewhere in the narrative. oddly, the group with the longest time-span of Radio 1 sessions, the Incredible String Band (who did their first Peel session on the third Sunday of R1's existence in 1967 and came back to do a session for his show when they reformed in 2000) have a similar significance beyond their music, although in their case it's almost the opposite; they were and still are bridgebuilders between hippiedom and old conservatism (sometimes even fascist sympathies).

as for the exclusion of "Breathe" from the playlist, of course it's a scandal - at least when Robson & Jerome or Cliff Richard weren't played you always knew Radio 2 would get behind them (although those records might be too MOR even for R2 these days!). in some ways I'm pleased, though; at least it shows that the radio corporates aren't as powerful as they like to think they are, and many of us like to fear they are ... still bizarre, though, that the more musically conservative Capital seem to be playing Blu & Sean more than R1.

what?!?!?!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

'Breathe' must surely be all over 1Xtra at least, and i'm sure Trevor Nelson would've played it once or twice on Rhythm Nation

stevem (blueski), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

xfm would not play abs either and this is the crucial point of my argument

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 11 August 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the playlist info, nice thread.God,there's not many great records around. My favourite is the Elton single & that's 25 years old, they just don't seem to make that many exciting records these days

zoot, Monday, 11 August 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

August is traditionally a slow time for new records. Its the time of year when novelty summer songs from the continent start to appear.
I wonder what we should be beware of this year?
Whats popular in cheesy clubs in ibiza etc this summer?

Rashid Latif, Monday, 11 August 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"hooray hooray, it's a cheeky holiday" is the number one reason I am not going on holiday this year.

(Actually it's because I'm skint, but avoiding this pile of cack morning noon and night is a huge bonus)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 11 August 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A no3 hit and R1 arent playing that either. I wonder how R1 decides what top 10 hits they wont play...and why?

Craig Malloy, Monday, 11 August 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

when was the last time Radio 1 refused to playlist a song that made #1? Cliff Richard's 'Millennium Prayer'?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 11 August 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

R1 refuse to play quite a lot of top 10 hits it seems.
Commercial radio stations always have done that with rock acts, but then again they arent a Public Service!

Craig Malloy, Monday, 11 August 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

So what station are you all listening to then? I stick with BBC Radio 2 these days.

Philip Mbezi, Tuesday, 12 August 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)
