Limp Bizkit New Album & Single(Subthread HOW bad are these lyrics?)

Limp Bizkit have announced the new album will be out on Sept 22.
Althought a title is still uncomfirmed it will be preceded a week earlier by the 'Eat You Alive' single.
Its lyrics include:

" No doubt that i'd love to sniff on them panties/i'd eat you alive/if i could approach you or even get close to the scent i left behind/i'd be fine"

could they be the worst, most mysogynistic , HORRID lyrics ever? (or do we wait and see whats worse on the album?)

Alternatively could someone just make sure Fred Durst never makes another record again.

*counting down to Miccio defense in five, four...*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 August 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, these lyrics cannot be defended. Just when I think its impossible to hate Fred Durst more than I do, things like this happen.

Rashif, Monday, 11 August 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Rashif, have you seen some of Anthony's previous posts on the band?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 August 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple over the past few months....but I'm not sure anyone can defend these lyrics.

Rashif, Monday, 11 August 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

skule this fule tony!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The new album's called "Panty Sniffer."

Adam Harrison-Friday, Monday, 11 August 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok obviously he's gonna defend it now.(he wouldve anyway) but really, he has his work cut out. What does everyone else think of these lyrics? worst ever?

Rashif, Monday, 11 August 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine saw Metallica play L.A. last night, and Limp Bizkit was the opening act. Apparently they were booed mercilessly. I think the clock is ticking on their career.

I wonder what he said to the L.A. crowd? "The Angels were a one-year wonder! The Dodgers offense sucks! Gary Payton's points per game avg will go down this year!"

And the new album is apparently called "Panty Sniffer"...I thought that was a joke, but maybe not?

ham on rye (ham on rye), Monday, 11 August 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"The lyrics are a great example of not misogyny but rather self-loathing, someone so desperate and lonely that etc etc etc..."

ham on rye (ham on rye), Monday, 11 August 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Just when you thought that their career had settled upon a firm and rocky bottom over which history would be allowed to wash over them, they find a way to jump into the abyss. Way to go.

Hey dudes, shoot us a line when you hit bottom! Thanks!

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 11 August 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Misogyny is cool ...

Durst's bitch ..., Monday, 11 August 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

When he was at the Metrodome Durst was all "hey, Prince needs his fuckin' ass kicked" or something to that effect. Sadly, this got massive amounts of cheers. I'm wondering if the people in this town were the only crowd NOT to boo them.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 11 August 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard the song yet, so I don't know if I'm gonna defend it or not (you people do realize that I'm not a fan of EVERY Bizkit song ever, right?). That lyric definitely doesn't strike me as necessarily misogynistic (is having issues about sexual relationships inherently misogynstic or only when you wear a backwards baseball cap and play rap-rock? I mean, is Liz Phair anti-male? I think you'd get more evenhanded debates if she wrote "Boxer Sniffer"), but I'd need to hear it context to say for sure.

One funny thing is just about everything Durst is doing right now (lyrics, getting booed, actin' nuts) seems like something Iggy Pop has done.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

puh-leeze tony

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure to what you're giving the raspberry, James (would it be too much to ask people to do that?), but if it's the Iggy Pop comparison, I'll definitely admit Fred's more of a whiny bitch than Iggy (though frankly every ILXor is too). Fred's more of a whiny bitch than Liz Phair too, but I still think comparisons to more critically hailed sexually-obsessed musicians are totally valid.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Those lyrics are more CRW/pathetic stalker than misogynistic per se.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

exactamundo.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

it is too much tony

you are an arse!

sourflower (dustjacket), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

anybody wanna take bets that this will not sell well?
I say, it might crack the top ten albums its release week and then oblivion...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Fred wants to be your dog.

(and just in case someone bitches about the Liz Phair comparison later)

Fred wants to be your cunnilingus king. And he loved his life, and he hated you.

This album will most likely not do well, but I'm definitely gonna buy it the day it comes out.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

it'll debut #3

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

liz phair crack?
you are an ass!

sourflower (dustjacket), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It will debut at #1 and sell 700,000 in its 1st week. After that its anyones guess.
Korn have covered 'One' by Metallica on their new album btw. Werent Limp Bizkit supposed to have 'Sanitarium' on their album? As well as a cover of an old 'Who' song.
Any Metallica covers will mean endless plays on MTV therefore helping album sales.

barry John, Monday, 11 August 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Limp's performance of Sanitarium was easily the best thing on that godawful Metallica Icon show.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"No doubt that i'd love to sniff on them panties/"

Now this almost sounds like it could be the first line of a hella good off-kilter style Ol' Dirty flow, although it lacks that sheer ridiculousness that would push it towards something less retarded, however, when you follow this line up with...

"i'd eat you alive/if i could approach you or even get close to the scent i left behind/i'd be fine"

I mean COME ON. First of all, if you're gonna try to take yourself so seriously as this, DON'T START WITH A LINE ABOUT SNIFFING PANTIES. Secondly, he's completely shifting from a "I'm badass" mode to a "oh I'm such a sad widduw boy" mode in ONE RHYME. Like, if you can't maintain a solid POV through a whole song, you can at least try to maintain a similar emotional perspective all the way through ONE RHYME.

Naming an album Panty Sniffer, don't worry, your step-sister might let you look at her boobies when you turn 13 you more-adolescent-than-actual-adolescents pathetic cockgoblin.

And I swear I'm gonna personally urinate all over the first person to use the word "hatorade" on this thread.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

you make a positive comparison to ODB but get upset he that he changes emotional persepctive in a rhyme? You don't like crazy? If you ain't gonna be schizo about sex, what are you gonna be schizo about?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

dave matthews and outkast come out that week - it will debut number 3

I think people's problems with durst's 'craziness' is that it isn't actually crazy, it's just obnoxious - alot closer to pledge week than odb, iggy stooge, jerry lee

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

anyhow the only question that matters: who did finally end up replacing borland?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Iggy is closer to pledge week too. You ever seen him interviewed? Dude is NOT crazy.

Wes Borland was replaced by Mike Smith of, ahem, Snot. I haven't heard any new songs but the guy looks really young and kinda cute. Big floppy hair. Visually he's a neat addition.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

visually he's filling big shoes

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

iggy interviews in the 60s, 70s: very odb

nowadays a bit pledge week (though he shows the mileage alot more than ron asheton), fred comes off as a - gasp - nicer guy though he's also more likely to wanna talk about his music (bor-ing)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you make a positive comparison to ODB but get upset he that he changes emotional persepctive in a rhyme?

Well, kinda; it's mostly that he's TRYING to convey some sort of deep feelings and such with a line about SNIFFING PANTIES, whereas ODB rhymes about wanting to sniff panties cuz he wants to sniff panties.

You don't like crazy? If you ain't gonna be schizo about sex, what are you gonna be schizo about?

No, I love crazy. I AM crazy. It's not my problem that Freddy bwoy is crazy-cuz-of-something-sex-related; it's that he either can't or won't maintain a solid perspective on said insanity all the way through A COUPLET much less an entire song.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

he's got them mos def 'quasi-homosexual- bet hedging blues

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

plus, the more it gets moaned about, the more referencing panty sniffing and heartbreak in the same line sounds like genius.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I will set you on fire, Anthony, for comparing Fred Durst to Iggy Pop.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

miccio if you think that's genius you should check out this kuh-razy guy named james taylor - he wrapped sexual frustration and anger in 'heartbreak' too. genius is wrapping 'heartbreak' in sexual frustration and anger - this year's model, mid-sixties dylan, efil4zaggin, alfred hitchcock

alex - have you heard that last iggy album?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

big talk is just talk unless you're backing it up!

that's from a Warrant song in case you forgot, Alex.

Actually, I should have said he's mixing up sex and inner peace.

but James Taylor wasn't funny, had lame beats, couldn't rap for shit and didn't make me at all sympathetic. Keep in mind I'm dealing with Durst from the perspective of somebody who's heard album tracks like "The One," "No Sex," etc. Not somebody who saw the hat and covered my ears.

Dude, Durst be flippin wine and water back in forth and throwing a little Hawaiian Punch in there too. Or maybe he's just turning whine into Hot Dog Flavored Water. Either way it's tasty as hell.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

and This Years Model is easily a better album than either of Limp Bizkit's good ones. I'm not electing Durst President, Blount. I'm just saying I enjoy his songs.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Durst is also WAY more fun to talk about than Elvis Costello. And he's funnier too, unless "speak double dutch to a real double dutchess" is the kind of wit you like.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

alex - have you heard that last iggy album?

No, but it can't have been worse than Avenue B (actually, yes it could), but that doesn't matter. Iggy Pop has earned the right to make bad albums. Fred Durst hasn't even earned the right to continue living.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

that's from a Warrant song in case you forgot, Alex.

I was never a Warrant fan, thank you very much.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Why don't you go yell at Alex for constantly threatening people's lives or something!

I didn't threaten your life, Anthony, I merely said that I'm going to set you on fire.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

glee-yatch

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, you're ducking and weaving! Clarify!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

he did - he will set you on fire but you will not die

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to say in all seriousness, now that Wes Borland is out of the band, why would anyone care? As far as I can tell, it was the creatie tension between Durst and Borland that made the band even passively interesting. You had Durst the meatnecked mook bully idiot with the psychogeek D&D-playin' whiz kid on guitar. THAT is an interesting dynamic, and it's no mystery why they didn't get along. With Borland out of the equation (replaced, invariably, by some line-towing twerp who Durst can dictate to), it's going to be a total bore. With Borland in the band, the mission of the outfit seemed cloudy (possibly the only intriguing thing about them). Now that he's gone, it's just Mooksapalooza.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

If I set you on fire, Anthony, would you sit still? No, I think you'd scramble to the bathroom or roll around on the floor. I'd suggest your chances of survival would be pretty good.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, miccio, is it that you're ashamed of liking limp bizkit so that anytime someone asks 'did you really mean ____ ?' you go 'of course not - don't be such a school marm!' or is it that you're just not very good at expressing yourself ie. you suffer from durstflow?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a question for the Limp Bizkit people (which, I guess, is just Anthony): Do the Hip Hop congniscenti take them seriously? I mean, he somehow managed to rope Method Man into collaborating with them. Do Hip Hop fans rate Fred's "skills" at all?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - when I told trife that with borland gone any reason I had for listening to limp bizkit was gone too he replied 'what - cuz he listened to RADIOHEAD?'

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a question for the hip-hop people alex, not the limp bizkit people

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm curious to hear the Limp Bizkit fans' opinion first.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Fred's just mistunderstood here. "The scent I left behind" is a double-entendre not only referring to the panties that he can no longer sniff, but also his own scent. He's a predator tracking down a scent, thinking about eating his prey alive, but he knows in the back of his mind that it's really himself that he's after, which is why he can't approach it. He's chasing his own tail. It's really about cross-dressing auto-fellatio.

BrianB, Monday, 11 August 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

like I said, James Taylor

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ok. My attempt to clarify.

Part of the appeal of Durst is that sometimes he acts like a businessman, sometimes like a spoiled kid, sometimes like a sensitive wittle boy, sometimes like a frat guy, sometimes like a Wu-Banger. He's rife with contradictions and I find that endlessly entertaining. And just as people who hate him will either treat him like an idiot or like an evil corporate mastermind depending on their whims, I can't help but do that myself sometimes when defending him. However, I DON'T think he's secretly a 2 Live Crew member PRETENDING to be sensitive, cuz frankly he'd do a better job if he was really that calculating (and I think the "quasi-homosexuals" line is way more offensive than anything Durst has done on record, though his behavior at Woodstock 3 was definitely more reckless). He's a smart man who isn't afraid to follow his muse or fuck around, admit his personal weaknesses, be a little reckless, or act on a whim. This leads to lots of contradictions, which is part of why I like him.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The same question also applies to Ice Cubes collaboration with Korn.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"he acts like a businessman, sometimes like a spoiled kid, sometimes like a sensitive wittle boy, sometimes like a frat guy, sometimes like a Wu-Banger" - see, you coulda covered all this with just 'frat guy' (weren't you the one pleading for conciseness and going "I like short shorts" on the 'voice thinx you dum' thread?)

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I possibly could have covered it all with just 'guy'.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

...or maybe "mook".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

or perhaps "kindling"

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a smart man who isn't afraid to follow his muse>>>

You realize of course he's only following his muse around to get a sniff at her panties.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Simon H., Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This is silly, it's not about Iggy being interviewed, the point is that Iggy's percieved craziness was a form matching content thing re the Stooges music, at least at the time if not so luridly obvious now.

Durst's "madness", misogyny, obnoxiousness is placed over beats which are basically just muzak and hence it's just revelling and basking in a fairly questionable position, showing off, performing, whatever you want to call it.

Bear in mind my first paragraph is a personal opinion on the Stooges, in no way do I believe it's a be all and end all concrete fact that yeah Iggy is punk rock you bitch etc etc etc disclaimer.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 14 August 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me try, Ned....

I believe Tom is trying to express his impression that said single's distinctive absence of even the slightest semblance of fun sent a veritable shockwave through Tom's aesthetic sensibility.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I was more echoing Larcole's bewilderment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I had been allowing myself to labour under a delusion about Fred Durst that has now rebounded on me in terms of wasted time and ear pain.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Limp Bizkit/Fugazi Bizarre Connection #243: What Fred said about Queen in that post I put up a couple days ago eerily echoes what Guy Picciotto says about Mercury et al in this cool issue of Go Metric! I have.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe the artistic tension between Borland and Durst will be replaced by artistic tension between Durst and DJ Lethal. Lethal can try to get him to act more Irish or something.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You all have to admit that, even if this new Limp record is decent, the press have already written their reviews for it, before anyone has heard it. All the ingredients for the much awaited Bizkit backlash have been painfully predicted for months and months, haven't they? 1) Most respected and second most prominent band member leaves, 2) "bad ass" band frontman meddling with "plastic" pop stars, 3) unusual degree of shouting and self-hype from frontman than ever before, 4) ungraceful album title, and 5) it's just THAT TIME for a public smackdown.

Obviously, while many would feel no target deserves this more, it still kinda saddens me to see a good chunk of music press behave this way through the transparent walls. (this is hardly the only way that saddens me, of course)

Then again, maybe even longtime Bizkit fans will righteously think this new album sucks poached eggs.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it all comes down to whether you always thought they sucked or not (which predetermines album response in ways anyway).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont blame him for wanting to sniff thora's panties. W hile it's a creepy sentiment, she's a looker, she is.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

While its highly unlikely that Limp Bizkit'll attempt something radically different from what both their fans and detractors alike expect from them, it's not unheard of for an artist to completely reverse the trajectory of their cannon. Conceivably, Durst could renounce his persona and come forth with an album of strikingly emotive, hushed acoustic ballads wherein he comes to terms with his troubled past and bitterly rues his myriad shortcomings.

Or not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

he doesn't have the voice to pull off decent hushed acoustic ballads.
