No, not the Robbie Coltrane British TV series nor the inferior knockoff starring Robert Pastorelli(?). I'm talking about the David Lowery post-Camper Van Beethoven band.

Their self-titled debut has a decent cut or two, I think "Kerosene Hat" is pretty great, "The Golden Age" has some fantastic slow, spacy tunes amidst mediocre rockers, and the others I haven't heard.

I don't think they're a dud, so I'll go classic based on their second album, even though it's the only place where it really all comes together for them.

Euro Trash Girl, best hidden track ever.

The only time I saw Cracker perform was at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley circa 1992, on a bill sandwiched between Firehose and Primus. I've never seen a band so hated by a crowd. The bassist was wearing a sparkly blue sequined dress and got called a "fag" repeatedly. Many, many shoes and beer cups were thrown stageward. In response, the band played a twenty-minute version of "Euro Trash Girl", gleefully angering the crowd more and more with each verse. Pretty freaking Classic.

songs I wouldn't mind hearing again from Cracker (whose first two albums were very important to me in middle school): "Nostalgia," "I'm A Little Rocket Ship," "Nothing To Believe In," "Don't Fuck Me Up With Peace And Love," "Another Song About The Rain," "Happy Birthday To Me"

they were never as good as they almost were.
I always got the feeling that they were holding too much back.

Cracker Forever is a great album. Really the only one I've liked since the first 2. As soon as they came out with videos, they started sucking. If you don't have it already, check out the latest Cracker Forever.

... By "the first 2," I was referring to Tuscon and Cracker Brand (yellow with sardines cover).

But back to the music:

Cracker to release "Alternative History: A Cracker Retrospective" on November 22nd via Cooking Vinyl

3-LP vinyl and 2-CD set will feature a collection of re-recordings, demos, outtakes, collaborations, and live tracks that presents an alternate history of the band (5 tracks are previously unreleased and 6 are rare and long out-of-print)

also marks the first time that any of these recordings have been available on vinyl

The band's two co-founders, David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, are available for interviews

Cracker to kick-off winter tour December 13th in St. Louis (dates below)

To the uninitiated Cracker might seem to be just another '90s alternative rock band. However, fans recognize that the band is much more than that, having skillfully explored a wide array of styles over nearly 35 years. Regrettably, when newcomers hear a Cracker song and wish to learn more about the band, they often start with algorithmic streaming playlists. These playlists are typically limited to the dozen or so tracks with the most streams. As a result, these playlists are dominated by a few albums from the early 1990s, the heyday of alternative rock radio. There are also a few “greatest hits” compilations for Cracker available, but these, at best, cover only the first third of the band’s 35-year career. Both of these sources overlook some of the band’s most critically acclaimed and fan-favorite work.

In response to this, the band started a discussion with Cooking Vinyl to see if they could rectify the situation by producing a retrospective that would encompass the band’s entire career. Unfortunately, it became apparent that the cost of licensing tracks from the Virgin and Concord catalogs would be prohibitive. Undeterred, the band began to catalog the recordings they controlled, and a more promising idea emerged. They realized they had a collection of re-recordings, demos, outtakes, collaborations, and live tracks that told an alternate history of the band. And this collection would not only serve as an introduction to the band for new fans, but also provide long-time, hardcore fans with access to some rare and unreleased recordings. Thus, “Alternative History” was born.

What’s in this collection? Well, it starts with a mellow country-rock reinterpretation of "Sick of Goodbyes." The recording features members of Drive-By Truckers, Brad Morgan and Jay Gonzales.

Next is the 2005 re-record of "Teen Angst" from the Redux album. This stays pretty true to the original because, like all the tracks on the Redux album, they were re-recorded so that when the band receives licensing requests, they can use their own masters.

"Mr. Wrong" is from a collaboration with Leftover Salmon in 2003, a reinterpretation of the song with a sort of bluegrass feel.

"I See The Light" is also from the Redux album and thus stays quite true to the original, except the end has more of a rave-up because, after years of performing this song live, that’s how the band plays it.

"Almond Grove" is a re-record with John Keane engineering, mixing, and playing a number of instruments. The story is that David was never totally happy with his vocals and banjo playing on the original version of the song. After the album was released, he initiated a new recording with John, who lives just down the street. This recording has some cool little arrangement quirks not in the original.

"Low" is a re-record from the Redux album. If you’ve heard the song in a film or TV show lately, it’s likely this is the version. The tonality of the song owes a lot to the Middle Eastern music David, Johnny, and Davey were listening to on the first Cracker tour. On this recording, Kenny Margolis further amplifies this with a short Middle Eastern accordion solo.

"Merry Christmas Emily" is a new recording, a reimagining of the song featuring Megan Slankard and Jeremy Lawton (Big Head Todd and the Monsters). Megan adds an ‘Emily’ counterpoint to the song, making the already unreliable narrator even more unreliable.

"The World is Mine" is another re-record from the Redux album, worth it just for the moment drummer Frank Funaro kicks into double time.

This "Sweet Potato" recording is from the 2003 collaboration with Leftover Salmon. Many fans prefer this to the original.

"Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out With Me" is a live version from the legendary German concert TV show Rockpalast. This performance predates the album version and has a fairly different feel.

"Seven Days" recorded live at Teatro Lara in Madrid is a barn burner.

"Big Dipper" is also a re-record from the Redux album. It sticks very close to the original because it’s a damn near perfect recording.

"Eurotrash Girl" is redone as a bluegrass waltz featuring Leftover Salmon.

Then, a recent mostly acoustic performance of "King of Bakersfield" with some nice Southwestern accordion work by Jeremy Lawton follows.

There’s nothing new about "I Need Better Friends." It’s a hidden gem from an often overlooked album, and people need to hear it.

"Father Winter" is a demo that David Lowery recorded for Johnny Hickman before they formed Cracker. In some ways, it’s the Cracker ur-song.

Next are a couple of fantastic live performances from Cracker’s appearance on the Rockpalast TV show: "One Fine Day" and "Gimme One More Chance."

Then there’s a live performance of "Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey," slowed down and stripped down.

"River Euphrates" is a track from the out-of-print Tucson EP. This recording is a live performance from a show in Germany.

"I Want Everything" is from the live show in Madrid 2021.

And to showcase the bands punkier material "Movie Star" and "Don’t F*ck Me Up With Peace and Love" from that same Madrid show.

"Ain’t Gonna Suck Itself" is also from the Redux album, but it’s an original track, not a re-record. It was meant to be the ultimate record company ‘kiss-off’ song. Essentially, the meta-meaning is, “Hey, we re-recorded our greatest hits, so screw you, Virgin Records.”

three weeks pass...

This is out now, don't tell David I'm listening to it on Spotify. The live tracks sound great, some of the collabs do too, but leftover salmon with cracker turning euro trash girl into a bluegrass waltz is awkward and gross. Looking forward to plain cracker rocking out on tour though.

They're right about "Big Dipper." That is a perfect recording.

five months pass...

The rock stuff mostly seems like garish glosses on Graham Parker, Mott, maybe lesser Kinks---but the country-er tracks mostly do right by Muswell Hillbillies etc, even got some earworms.
Today there's this news:

David Lowery (Cracker, Camper Van Beethoven) to release his new 28-track solo album "Fathers, Sons and Brothers" on May 30th via Cooking Vinyl

"Fathers, Sons and Brothers" is David's musical autobiography, celebrating his youth, family, friends and the highs and lows of his lengthy 40-year career in the music business

This 3-LP vinyl and 2-CD set combines three of David's previously online-only released autobiographical solo albums In The Shadow of the Bull, Leaving Key Member Clause, and Vending Machine, and also includes four new previously unreleased songs, as well as four newly re-recorded tracks.
He's been writing songs about people on the fringe for damn near a lifetime. 40+ years of detailing the idiosyncrasies of outcasts, losers, freaks and outliers in society in his two acclaimed, if not totally different, bands - Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven.

David Lowery, chief singer-songwriter and frontman from the aforementioned bands, is now taking a much different approach to his songwriting and is singing about something he's really never dug that deep into - himself.

On his latest sprawling 28-song solo album, Fathers, Sons and Brothers, Lowery lets his memory, and pen, traverse back to some of his earliest memories as a child in an English seaside town ("Frozen Sea"). Throughout the length of the album, he chronologically takes us through his youth (attending a Spanish bullfight with his family, where he asks "Papa, do they really kill the bull?") and carries on through his coming-of-age period (re-locating to California's Coachella Valley with his family in the '70s, as well as a humorous tale of landing in Disneyland jail after getting sh*t-faced on vodka and mushrooms at the theme park, and standing up to bullies in his disabled sister's defense).

David recalls moving away from his loving parents' home ("Mom, I'm Living the Life"), starting a band ("I Wrote A Song Called Take The Skinheads Bowling") and then goes onto detail an early love that sadly disintegrated due to his own self-described anger and selfishness on, perhaps, the album's most moving track ("Mexican Chickens").

The album further delves into the ups and downs of his music careers with both groups (tapping into CVB band tensions on "We Hate You" and Cracker's quick rise to fame in the early/mid '90s on "It Don't Last Long"). He recalls hooking up with his future ex-wife in Richmond, VA ("Pretty Girl from Oregon Hill"), and details friends (Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous on "Mark Loved Dogs and Babies"), family, children, divorce and more.

Personal notes on the album from David:

"Over the years, many have encouraged me to write an autobiography. However, it never really appealed to me. Partly because it seemed like I would have to learn an entirely new skill set, but mostly because there is a standard arc to all successful “rock” autobiographies: a tough childhood, a deep passion for music, many obstacles to overcome, relentless striving, and finally, against all odds, success. And that’s not my story."

"While I have a deep passion for music, I never really struggled. I grew up in a two-parent home. My parents stayed together their whole lives. We didn’t have much, but we never wanted for anything. My father was a career military man but was a sweet and gentle soul. My parents always supported my musical career. The first album I recorded was immediately played on the BBC and later MTV. Within 18 months of releasing the first Camper Van Beethoven album, we were playing arenas with REM. The first song Cracker recorded was immediately in heavy rotation on MTV. And so on. Honestly, I feel like I’ve lived a charmed life."

"So, in lieu of an uninteresting written autobiography I’ve made this record. I do this not so much to tell my own story but to pay tribute to my mother, father, sisters, extended family, friends, and those who have shared their lives with me. I wanted to sing the songs of the unsung, celebrate friends and family, make amends, and apologize where necessary. It took me nearly 5 years to make this recording and I’m a little sad the process is over. Although much of this I recorded alone during the pandemic I had an amazing set of virtual collaborators spread across 5 time zones and three continents. I couldn’t have done it without them. Thank you, Jim, Leith, Mark, Bryan, Lisa, Jeremy, Luke, Carlton, Thayer, Megan, Pistol, Velena and Bob. Also, thanks to Drew Vandenberg and Jason Nesmith for piecing this all together and making it sound good."

David Lowery's new solo album "Fathers, Sons and Brothers" will be available May 30th as a 3-LP LTD edition vinyl gatefold set with 12-page booklet, a 2-CD set with 20-page booklet, and on digital & streaming platforms via Cooking Vinyl. Click here to pre-order.
