TS: Urge Overkill vs Suede

Wouldnt it be great to re-master every 90s record so it sounded 'shittier'? (like what they did with 'Raw Power' (god damn him) except in reverse?)

I'm goin' with Suede. I never really 'got' Urge Overkill's glittery lounge act schtick. Sure, they had the odd good track now and again (I remember diggin' "Sister Havana"), but their smarm repelled me otherwise.

However ridiculous, Suede blessed the world with their first record, which I still throw on every now and again. Not so much their later stuff (though "Film Star" was brilliant, as was "She's in Fashion"), but I'd say their staying power well outlives Urge Overkill.

I'd agree pretty much, but maybe what Dave Q sez re: remastering might finally make Exit the Dragon interesting to me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The only problem with 'Exit' is that the drummer sounds brain dead. The fills all sound like he's reading them off sheet music and getting the pages mixed up during the song, and they're given an echoey, booming, enervating kind of sound to compensate for being 'off' alot of the time. He doesn't wake up until the end of "Digital Black Epilogue", which is part of why that song kind of stuns me, esp. after listening to the rest of the album.

dave q, Monday, 11 August 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But wasn't the deal that for that and Saturation they were using a studio drummer instead (I'm positive that was the case for Saturation at least)?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 August 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I would've never guessed that from listening to it. (Could well've been the case for 'Saturation')

dave q, Monday, 11 August 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Something about how the Butcher Brothers thought the real drummer was crap and figured they knew better about beats, so they got in some Philadelphia pro.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 August 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

c'mon Alex - come around to my way of thinking!

Pretty much every Urge OK record have some dog songs. I think Blackie was their drummer because he looked cool in the duds (AKA the Peter Chriss syndrome), as he was sloppy live. They sounded better as a four piece, but they were still pretty hackish for such a popular band. That being said, they were still pretty fun to see live for the schtik. Wasn't Blackie (and for that matter probably the rest of them) having problems with chemicals around their last record?

Yeah, so whatever happened to those critically acclaimed Butcher Brothers since UO and Hanson?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

this is tough, but I'm going with Urge. Urge's crap albums were on an independent label and frankly if you want them you have to FIND them. Suede's crappy album, "DogManStar," on the other hand. Is painfully hailed and still easy to find at a good record store. If I simply do "Suede" & "Coming Up" vs. "Saturation" & "Exit The Dragon"...I'm voting for the Urge.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, anthony, i've never been confused so much by what you just said... If you were commenting on not having to confront the Urge "crap" as much while shopping, then from my experience you're wrong, as i see far more UO than Suede in the used bins.

The only album I semi-regularly listen to by any of the above is Urge's "Supersonic Storybook".. sloppy drumming, "crappy", independent or not, that record is great fuel. So, i give the slight nod to Urge.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The crap urge is Jesus Urge Superstar and (maybe) Americacruiser, which I NEVER see in a used bin. What I do see, Saturation and Exit is fuckin' AWESOME.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Urge probably never recorded anything as good as Suede's first album. That said, Urge gave fucking amazing great smarm. Every single magazine story about Urge was a beautiful thing, especially when they'd talk about how no one would dare break into their houses in their Scary Chicago Neighborhood because all the gangs loved them! And the photo shoots too! Suede never wore matching medallions. Suede's interviews were terrible.

dave q, Monday, 11 August 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes I think "The Break" was the best rock single of the 90s. Anthony = OTM. Suede's got more visible baggage, so Urge win.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

UO own suede. literally!
i dunno, i like the horrible sounding Americruiser/JUSS, albini/vig's early stuff...
SSS and saturation have grand moments unrivaled by suede, at any point. point-UO.

yeah, blackie o had some massive problems with the H train. look at the pics in Exit, red eye lids, not from the ol booze o roney, no no. that's junkie bidness. too bad about eddie roseir (however it's spelled) he wrote some massive stuff, back in the day and his voice was pretty nice, too...
all hail 'dropout'.

'exit the dragon' is a staggeringly deep rock record, one that reveals stuff with every play... if you've never heard it, muster up a coupla dollars and free a copy from the cutout bin (there'll be one there, trust me...)

xxx

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

what do you mean "too bad about eddie.."?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Wonderful Sometimes is one of the most melodic songs I've ever heard... I love Suade, despite having utter disdain for most bands that sound anything similar... Urge Overkill does nothign for me...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Urge OK's "Stull" (ep) is also good. They must of had problems writing tunes, but it didn't stop them from making some quality covers, even beyond the Neal Diamond song. I really like 'Stitches', which is some obscure punk nugget and the Hot Chocolate cover is ace.
