It had to happen.
Eminem's record label is to launch a televised search for the next hip-hop superstar.

When will we see 'Rock Idol' 'Metal Idol' 'Indie Idol' 'Opera Idol' 'Nashville Idol' 'R N B Idol' ? Some lowly cable station is bound to launch them sooner or later.

Big Daddy Moran, Monday, 11 August 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there is a Nashville Idol, maybe called Nashville Star or something.
I can't wait for Emo Idol.

It's not really "Eminem's label" as in Shady Records, but the Interscope behemoth...

JoB (JoB), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Coming up this week on "Shoe-Gazer Post-Rock Idol"!...

OPERA IDOL NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

OPERA IDOL NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

Cecilia Bartoli says "Yo, we need to show them VH1 bizzatches what a real diva is. Shit, ain't no diva ever worn a size 2 Whitney. I should curbstomp her narrow ass."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Channel Four in the UK I think already had an 'Opera Idol' apparently.

"Interscope Records - also home to 50 Cent and Dr Dre - has teamed up with cable channel Showtime for the six-part series.

Titled Interscope Presents The Next, it is designed to be a cross between an American Idol-style talent show and a rap contest as seen in the film 8 Mile.

From October, viewers will see five pairs of rappers go head-to-head in a rap battle to win a place in the show's final.

The 10 finalists - two each from New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Detroit - were chosen by a panel of experts.

But rather than whittle them down by a public vote, the winner of each rap duel will be the person who sends the studio audience the wildest. "

Paul Townes, Monday, 11 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Guest rappers will act as referees during the televised duels and lyrics will not be censored.

Criminal checks were not run on potential contestants - but producers say they "did avoid anyone under incarceration".

The one-hour shows will also explore the lifestyles and neighbourhoods of the finalists.

hahahahahaha

the person who sends the studio audience the wildest
this sounds very Irving Berlin to me: "Baby, you're the wildest, the toppermost of wild."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is that funny, Geoff?

d k (d k), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i think this is a great idea

"Criminal checks were not run on potential contestants - but producers say they "did avoid anyone under incarceration". "

That never happened on American/Pop Idol. People got kicked out for far less.

Geoff W, Monday, 11 August 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"did avoid anyone under incarceration"
duh, cuz they're in the pokey!!!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

or do rappers still call it the hoosegow?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Producers then did a frantic scramble for background checks when it was revealed that 'incarceration' does not mean 'living out of your car'."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

On Bob Log III's last album he ends one song by saying "I'm a professional goddamnit! I live in my car!"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What does Eminem have to do with this?

scott m (mcd), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

He owns the car all these guys live in.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
so has anyone else seen this show ("Interscope: The Next Episode")? I caught a bunch of episodes recently and it's pretty fucking great. Each episode takes place in a difft city (LA, ATL, NY, Philly etc) and features two 'up-and-coming' MCs, shows their backgrounds intercut with footage of the two MCs battling, which the winner of each battle I presume going onto some larger competition with the other winners. haha, one of the guys from the Atlanta episode really did live in his car. (that was a weird episode, the guy what lived in his car was pretty sorry, he even got beat in freestyle battle by his MANAGER on hot 107, and the other MC being profiled clowned on him so bad I could barely watch... but he won anyway!!! I wonder if that was rigged or something)

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't seen it, but I wouldn't get my hopes up about the results, given the outcomes of the selection processes of Making The Band and those MTV MC Battles.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the MTV MC battles were just pathetic. every time a really good rapper got up there and did their thing they were abruptly disqualified for breaking the "no cursing" rule, which IIRC resulted in some Ginuwine-doppleganger winning. and while this show doesn't benefit from having Method man and luda on the jury, it's basically as partial as can be by way of having random kids crowd around the MCs and decide who wins by cheering. plus of course it isn't censored, since it's on Showtime.

most of the meat of the show is in the interviews and such, and the looks into the lives of each MC are surprisingly in-depth. I find myself liking those parts more than the actual battling, surprisingly.
